He has the stats of a 2 guard only. Late in the year (last 6 games) he got heavy minutes. His shooting stats would scream stay away. On paper he doesn't look good, BUT basketball games are not won on paper. It comes down to trusting Pikiell. Looking at someone like this leads me to believe the staff think baker could be the answer at the "1". Maybe I am reading way too much in to this.

Looks like a SG to me. His assist/TO numbers at Texas were pretty poor. Shot 22% from 3 as a freshman, up to 32% last year. Scored 29 in the B12 tournament against Texas Tech including 6-7 on threes.

Seems like he might be a decent offense-off-the-bench guy. His stats don't look like a guy you want playing 25+ minutes. Definitely athletic but it looks like he's predominately a shooter, not really a slasher.

Got a lot more playing time at the end of the season when one of Texas' guys was sitting out because of some FBI stuff. Played mostly well but put up a dud against Nevada in the tournament.

That is a good explanation of
1. Why the sudden increase in playing time
2. Why he could be transferring

I like there being a bonafide reason for a transfer when they come to your school. alarms go off when it is because they don't like the coaching staff or other things like that.

I'm not sure what to make of it. Texas is having something of a crisis with Mo Bamba and Eric Davis going pro, Young and another player (James Burke) transferring, and Kerwin Roach entering the draft but without an agent. So had Young returned there was probably playing time for him.

He definitely has a chip in his shoulder:

“I’ve always been doubted by critics who say I’m not a Big 12 player,” Young said afterward. “To me, I’ve always seen it in my eyes, and my coaches and teammates know I’m a Big 12 player.”

Originally my thinking was he was transferring because he got a taste of being a starter and doesn't want to go back to the bench, but with all the departures I would imagine his minutes would've increased if he returned.

I'll also note that sometimes you just bet on athleticism. James Palmer started his career at Miami and his numbers were pretty poor, but he went to Nebraska, sat out a year, and was a legitimately good starter on a bubble team. Nothing he did at Miami indicated that he would become that player, but if you look back he was a 4-star prospect rated 105th in his class in 2014. Two years later, Jacob Young ranked 106th in the class of 2016.

Obviously it's not that easy, but there's a blueprint for success. I'd be curious to know which other schools are pursuing him.

Two players relevant to this thread:
Earl Duncan and Keith Hughes.
Both did NOTHING their first two years. The rest is history.

Young averaged 13.3 points on 47.6 percent shooting over UT's final six contests, a stretch that included a 29-point outburst against Texas Tech in the Big 12 tournament.

The nation's No. 23 point guard coming out of Houston Yates, according to 247Sports, Young appeared in 62 games for the Longhorns and made 10 starts across two seasons.

What about Joe Cremo from Albany as a Grad transfer? I know he has a boatload of schools interested in him but we are not on the list?

reason for transfer - from a poster on the Texas Board:
because Eli Long and Matt Coleman will be eligible next season and in front of him at PG.

If you are going to consider taking Tarin Smith as a grad transfer, then you have to consider this player, even in a scenario where he sits one and you possibly only get one year on court, because he could be a grad transfer afterwards (which may be an essential buying in advance of a grad transfer/4th year)....almost like an insurance policy, in case you don't get what you want in 2019 recruiting and have to roll over into 2020 recruiting.

I would be shocked if he landed here, but stranger things have happened. Spots are going to be held open forever, some recruits may want to get on board now before we are full.

The other unknown would be an additional departure from the RU roster that hasn't happened or may not happen at all....on paper, with no expected departures, a sit out transfer that fits the bill, still seems a little odd to me.....in the front court, yes that makes sense....back court....ehh.....??

I watched some of his film. IMO, It must have been a down year for players when this guy came in ranked at 106.

I would slow play this kid even if it meant he goes elsewhere. Right now I don't see the rationale of taking him until other potential roster additions are settled.

I say pass on this recruit because the emphasis should be on filling the two remaining scholarships for next season with grad transfers so that there will be 3 available scholarships for 2019-20 where Rutgers is involved with some very talented players.

This program needs wins now - take the ATHLETIC kid. It balances out the new "shooters" coming on the roster this upcoming season, and mesh well when eligible.

The other perspective is that - potentially- this creates a roster of big guards similar to what Chaney did years ago at Temple - starting with Terence Stanbury. Its a great approach to dominate a facet of the game.

It's all about fit. Will he fit what Pike wants to do and does he fit the rest of the team?

It also becomes an issue of the bird in the hand vs 2 in the bush. Is Young equal to or better than any 2019 recruit that is high on us (i.e. Mulcahy/Hyatt)?

Heck, maybe bringing in Young for a visit puts a little pressure on Hyatt to reclassify & commit, as Young would be eating into 2019 playing time. If Hyatt reclassifies, he'd get a jump on PT this fall.

Key words here: “this program needs wins now” and so does Coach P! If the team goes under 500, there is a chance Pikiell ‘s job will be in jeopardy. I truly hope that is not the case but that’s the reality of big time athletics.

Coach P's job in jeopardy???? R U kidding? He is going to be given several years to turn this ship around and one more year of under .500 is not going to put him on the hot seat. If year 5 and still not winning record then let's talk.

No such thing as “job security “ I dont care if a coach has a ten year contract. Do I think Pike will get fired if we go 2 games under 500 next year, NO. But I think he will be somewhat on the hot seat if he does and needs to go post season the following year. He is definitely Building something special and I’m not a Debbie downer but the reality is there. I just think this next year is key to getting a winning record and he needs all the help he can get now.

Incidentally, I said “a chance”. There will be that kinda talk, trust me. I certainly don’t agree with it but my point was, why take a chance, win now, get all the help you can. Which I know he is doing. I want this program to succeed more than most. I’m a long suffering fan. Lol

He just got a contract extension. Any talk of hot seat is nothing short of insane.

I think they are just pointing out there will be no serious talk of job security after a losing season next year, which it likely will be. However I don't think he can afford a losing season in year 4, but fortunately I think that is when we will indeed have a winning season and start trending upward.

No chance of hotseat after next year, especially with integrating 6+ new players and the shift to 20 conference games. That's crazy talk.

Some good stuff in here, but no consensus on the reason leaving. Seems like more than a few down on Shaka.

Kid seems like he's worth looking at, but the posts about his Mom on twitter would be a red flag to me.
What are the posts about his mom on twitter?

Nothing Pikiell does on the court would get him fired this next season. IF things go really south and players disappoint relative to expectations, and the bright spots transfer out, and the 2019 class is shaping up poorly, then the "Is Pikiell going to be the right guy to turn Rutgers around?" chatter will start, but it would take another disastrous year in 2019-2020 to get him fired, but two back-to-back disastrous years would get most coaches fired.

Even if we finish last in 2019 and 2020 I can see Pikiell keeping the job. However if the 2021 season ends and Pikiell hasn't finished better than 13th or 14th, that's probably it then.

All of which is to say: Any talk about his job security before 2020 is unwarranted.

The only people that will be putting Pikiell on the hot seat after next season , are clueless posters on message boards, who don't have a clue what a total rebuild Pikiell inherited when he came to RU.
