There was a lot of debate when the transfer portal opened about whether this would be good or bad for MSU. To this point, it has been a huge positive.

Football- Polk, Calvin, Lashley, Charlton, and Green
Basketball- Brooks, Jeffries, Watts, and Moore
Baseball- Debrule, Jess Davis, RJ Yeager, and Stone Simmons

I’m sure there are guys I’m missing. Some like Costello didn’t work out, but just like HS recruiting you never hit 100%. We’ve lost some too, but almost everyone who left did so because they weren’t getting on the field.

At the P5 level, the FAR majority of transfer guys are going to be making downward or lateral moves due to the playing time (i.e. going from blue bloods to other blue blood or to middlings like us). The chances of a multi-year starter leaving a middling P5 school for somewhere else is much lower, although yes it's going to happen. All that to say, I certainly expect us to benefit more from the portal and the one-time transfer rules, than the blue bloods.

Now, at the G5 - different story. I do see their multi-year starters leaving for greener P5 pastures more often. Probably all end up being a wash at that level.

It's like JUCO used to be for us, except everyone can use it, all over the country. And we're a very desirable landing spot, being in the SEC.

ETA: No matter how negative some here want to be about NIL, at the college level it's still about playing time, because the money to be made from NIL pales in comparison to the money to made in the NFL. And when you start looking at short-term paydays, you end up like Marcus Dupree.

Costello lead us to our biggest victory in several years, so that was a win. Shivers, the bama transfer, was on the path to being a contributor until he got in the dawg house.
