Casey grew up when Boozer got hurt. His transformation into a serviceable guy down low might have pushed Duke over the top that year once Boozer got back into the rotation.

I have a totally different recollection. Casey played some when Boozer got hurt because there was no one else. In fact, Duke was forced to play a number of smaller players in the middle, to include Horvath, Nate James, Carawell, and Reggie Love. I remember games where Carawell played center. Casey's flaws were so apparent that his starting time had to be restricted. Small hands do not become big hands. I agree that he did improve with more playing time, but not to the point that he was dependable. OFC
Carawell graduated in 2000. Horvath didn't play in 2001 because he was out with an injury. Sanders played his role well when Boozer went down in '01. We don't win without his contributions.
I actually agree with @Devilinside. I like Sanders and he did play well in small stretches when Boozer went down. But the other guys around him were so good anything he gave us were a bonus. It was hard watching him try to hold onto the ball for 4 years. But he played hard. He was a 5 star so I expected more. But he definitely contributed when Boozer went down. No way we win in 2001 if Boozer stayed injured.
I went to see the 01 Duke team play against a ranked Temple team in Philly, Duke destroyed them by the way.
Got there 2 hours early to try to get down on the floor and shake some hands/ get some autographs. Casey Sanders couldn’t have been nicer, was willing to have a conversation and sign everything. Most of the other guys on the team kept to themselves and wouldn’t interact with any fans. And for the record, I was fine with that, I would probably be the same way.

That's a nice story about Sanders.
When Boozer went down duke changed their style of play. They inserted Duhon into the lineup and starting playing at a faster pace. The 5th player was a combo of sanders, James, and love. When love and sanders were out there they had them running up and down the court like crazy to tire out the other teams big. Sanders didn’t get many touches but he played his role as screen setter and rim protector very well. In fact the game after boozers injury was at UNC. The first play sanders sent a message by blocking a shot.
This is kinda what I’m getting at. I was never trying to argue that Sanders turned into a Boozer. But, he elevated himself into part of the glue of the team. I’ve heard that he also became more vocal during that stretch. Think of him like a gigantic Rudy with regular, Rudy-sized hands. He became the best version of himself.
We don’t need Boozer down low. We need a guy who makes all the other guys better. Think BASF. Is Udeh that guy? At this point, only he and Scheyer know. And now? We wait.
Udeh is a big guy. Him and Young would be the bruise brothers. He could be foul prone, so good to have options.

If true, that's incredible since they have a less than stellar reputation among basketball players. Love goes to UNC, probably takes fake classes, tries to transfer, and learns that fake classes don't transfer. Wow, UNC screws up even when the screw up.
His remote learning underwater basket weaving credits did not transfer

Of course he decommited from Michigan. He has zero real college credits from his three years with the cheats, and he did poor on his admissions test.

I agree with all of that. My point is that we do not need/want another Sanders. We are better than that now and need to sapire higher.

Pure speculation. His role was to clog up the middle and give others a blow. During his career, he averaged 2.5 pts per game and rebounds 2.7/game. FT% 51.8. Hardly a guy we wanted in at the end of the game. OFC

Udeh reminds me of a poor man's Adem Bona. Not necessary a bad thing. They were both McDonald's AA last year, maybe Udeh is a late bloomer. Bona is more polished on offense. He's built like Sean Obi, and does not have bad knees like Obi. I guess he could end up the player we hoped Obi would be. 20 mpg out of him could be our missing piece. We don't need Flip getting worn down at the 5.

Udeh checks all the boxes as far as what this Duke team needs in that post. I am not comfortable playing a strong and mature team like the Tenn team we faced this past tournament, with Flip, Young and Reeves. I need some grown man strength down there.

K and Duke took that away.
