Transfer portal curse

I'd rather see zero transfer portal acquisition on the part of MSU.

It's been a complete disaster.

And the only one that could be beneficial (Ruiz, the kicker) is only beneficial on kickoffs. (usually one a game at opening kickoff 1st or 2nd half due to the fact that this team CAN'T 17ING SCORE!!)
We've attempted only 1 FG to my memory in the last 4 games, due to the fact that we need TDs instead of FGs because of being down in every game. So we don't even use him.

Is there any transfer guy that contributes, other than KJ 1 game before he came completely unglued? (I hope he's OK from the knee to the head.)

Here's the deal on transfers and JUCOs. If you are taking them to plug holes and come in and start, you are in trouble. If you are using them to add talent, you're alright.

Exhibit A: You have Chris Relf (RJr.) and Tyler Russell (RFr.). Cam Newton is available. This is adding talent. The 2017 class was also adding talent (we just went too far, AND totally whiffed on high school guys). 2009 class is another example of talent.

Exhibit B: You literally have no upperclass defensive linemen. You recruit Arizona Western's whole DL. That is trouble. Brandon Maye is another example here - he just wasn't good enough to be the savior we needed. Tommy Stevens, K.J. Costello, though it's debatable that we needed both of these, could have just took our lumps with who we had.

There's nothing evil about the transfer process itself. It's how you use it.

Yeah, I wasn't even considering JUCOs, as we've had several pan out and contribute greatly. I was thinking about the grad transfers mainly, and the fact that they have been duds.

I had high hopes for Shavers. He gone.

There's a difference in transfers. Grad transfers, one time transfers, juco, etc. they're not all the same. We should forget offensive grad transfers unless they've played in a similar system. Obviously it takes too much time for a one year player to grasp the offense. Juco fills holes and one time transfers will too. But you aren't turning down a Justin Fields type player transfer either.
Stop taking guys that have been on a team three years and can't touch the field would be smart, unless there was an injury that's good now.

So you’d rather have the guys in starting roles that can’t beat out the transfers?

If they're freshmen and the transfers aren't really good, just filling a spot because our talent at said position is bad/thin, yes. Shavers wasn't doing anything great. Our OL pickup wasn't starting. QB can't figure it out. I'd go all freshmen with potential since this year doesn't count against eligibility.

You should listen to Thunder and Lightening's podcast where they outline the last 5 years of recruiting cycles. It was eye opening to me. Or you can go to 247sports https://247sports.com/college/mississippi-state/Season/2017-Football/Commits/ and see for yourself.

Those transfers may be busts but the production is a direct result of not signing enough OL and WR talent in 2017 or 2018 that are still here contributing. They either were JuCo's, never made it to campus or simply were never there in an undersigned classes. The 2017 & 2018 classes should have contributors all over the field and we simply do not have them out there. There are a couple but not nearly enough.

The results are staggeringly bad.

States OL ranking out of 100 teams reported is: 93rd in pass blocking and 95th in run blocking - This is not all on Leach with his system change or the transfers being bust or even on Moorhead. A lot of this lies squarely on Dan Mullen and Hevesy. They were checking out and had no long term plan. The Oline is probably the one place it takes us the longest for three stars to mature into starters and that was the most under recruited area.

We may have to go out and get some transfers this year too, but it won't be because we want to do so.
