Self, like Tubby Smith, coaches 3-4 stars much better than 5-stars. He just hasn't done well with young talent. Jackson is the most successful 5-star freshman that I can remember first Self.
Most coaches do as their is less "coaching" to do LOL.think about it Cal has to drag(in his own words) the team along. Self has a JR/SR dominated roster that can run and call alot of the shots. Its fools gold in some ways. We hear all this talk about how self "develops" players, really? Seems like he holds lots back and they leran his system to a T.

This move tells me 1 thing about Young, he doesn't want ANY competition for playing time. He was scared off by a player who failed miserably running the PG position in Newman. Thats exactly what this move says about him.

This is such BS. Maybe he loves his hometown and school. Maybe he loves Kruger- a helluva coach who has taken two teams to F4s, 3 to E8s and four to the S16!

Oklahoma was just in the F4 last year btw.

Are you serious? Did you not hear the comments his dad made a few weeks ago? Normally, I would agree 100% with you and I never blame a kid for staying home but this is a different situation. Let me ask you this, if UK and KU had completely open spots at PG, would Young be going to Oklahoma?

Exactly. No way after his dad made those comments. They have been very open with their feelings and I believe they say what they mean. If you read the interview from a couple days ago, it had nothing to do with loving the hometown and EVERYTHING to do with the situation of the roster.

Can't wait to see his dads next Twitter message and how great ou really is. So much for the picture of him in the wildcats hoodie. I hope he still wears it around

Hello Mrs. Kruger, your husband is a fine coach.

I think the fact Young specifically cited competition against Graham and Newman (both combo guards mind you) as a big con for Kansas. He didn't want to compete. That simple.

Seems to me like he went exactly where he needed to go. I'll enjoy watching him next year, just like Fultz and Smith, Jr.

Wonder if we get Oklahoma in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge?

I think Graham is probably gone at KU. Seems like he would do really well somewhere exotic, like Greece. Also, wouldn't surprise me if the Ukrainian kid went back to Europe.

KU Lineup looks like this, I would guess:

Starters
PG: Malik Newman
SG: Marcus Garrett
SF: Lagerald Vick
PF: Carlton Bragg
C: Udoka Azubuike

Bench:
Bill Preston
Dwight Coleby
Sam Cunliffe

I guess that's a decent roster, but I don't see them contending for a national championship with those pieces. Maybe a different story if Graham stays. I'm sure Self is putting on the full court press as we speak.

For some reason I can't read the Kansas homeboard, but found this little gem on the national board. I find it absolutely impossible that a high level recruit changed his mind literally overnight the day before announcing. You don't set a date to announce without knowing your plans. Enjoy:

For those interested in the word coming out of Lawrence - Trae Young contacted Bill Self yesterday and said he was coming....slept on it, was having second thoughts....Another call was made early this morning to Bill Self, this time Trae asking if he for sure was going to be the next Frank Mason (like self promised) his freshman year. Bill kindly advised him, that it would be a wait and see approach, that he was not sure and actually doubtful that Graham would be leaving for the NBA. This is not what Trae wanted to hear. Trae wanted to be the guy his Freshmen year. With Graham more than likely coming back, and a more mature Newman in the fold, Young was told the opportunity is there, but he's gonna have to work his butt off and earn it. Basically Young wanted something Self couldn't promise. Young talked it over with the Family, and Ray, his father, couldn't convince him to keep his silent and thus switched early this morning.

...Sorry Mr. Trae, this is KU, we do not NEED you. Good luck in Norman.

Not sure why y'all are dismissing Oklahoma so heartily. Pretty solid program historically and a damn good coach in Kruger. Don't let this rebuilding year shade that.

I heard it was because he was going to be underage at enrollment time and was scared of getting raped in the dorm...

Maybe he found your constant choking off-putting.

I hate having to teach guests about college basketball.

I wouldn't be so sure. Kansas still has Devonte Graham coming back and Malik Newman is red shirting this year. A healthy Azibuike and if Carlton Bragg would get his sh't together, Kansas would be tough. They need to find that 3 man to take Jackson's place.

I agree. KU will be very good next year with a roster of Graham, Newman, Bragg, Azubuike, Vick, Myk and Preston (freshman)

Duke would hurt more than KU if they don't get duval. Chances are good Graham will be back and he can play pg. they will return Vick, Newman, Svi so they are set. Either way KU will start the season ranked top 5 easily and possibly higher

Honestly I hope they get Duval over Duke - just assume for Duvall to go somewhere entirely though.

Kansas will be hurting next year -
I love it!

This makes me wonder if he would have come to UK. He waited a long time to pick his home school. With UK out of picture maybe those were always his two options.

From what I have heard and read no way Graham is back. Looks like a top 20 team but nothing that is overwhelming or a title contender. Also, remember that Preston is a BIG TIME academic risk and might not be eligible.

Don't think the chances that Graham are back is good(exactly the opposite same goes for Svi or whatever the heck his name is). Also, Trevon Duvall will never be eligible. He is Terrance Ferguson 2.0 just like Billy Preston.

No way do I believe that Duval (if he picks KU) and Preston will both be ineligible, but if they are, then Self will find a way to get Svi and/or Graham to stay. Could you imagine if all they had was:

Vick (the Kick)
Garrett
Newman
Azubuike
Bragg
Cunliffe (2nd semester)

Bench full of nobodies.

You could be right but there has to be a good reason why most of the major schools stayed away from Duvall. Duke didnt start recruiting him until the ratfink got desperate. Self has had to be desperate the last few years and has taken changes on guys like Alexanders, etc. Both Duvall and Preston will NCAA Clearinghouse nightmares. Just sit back and watch.

Wiggins and Embid aren't chopped liver but certainly didn't meet expectations in college. They've become better pros recently. Shouldn't be a surprise for Embid though considering he had two seasons to get fully healthy, gain strength, and do skills work.

Jackson would have been great at any school he chose. Young did us all a favor. I think if Young committed to UK early we wouldn't have Washington or Green. In the end UK came out the winner. Young and his mom can now sleep together at OU, because it will be close to their home and Wow the dorms are sooooo nice. I thought Young and his Mama came off being pretty silly putting down our dorms. Young has gone into a black hole a may never be mentioned or seen on TV on a regular basis. I say he did us a favor. He can now be the star on is team and shoot whenever he wants, but who cares.

That's my point! Self doesn't do well usually with elite talent recruits.

if i'm being objective (and i'm usually not in this forum), i would point to a long list of busts under Bill Self. Just off the top of my head, I can think of:

1) Josh Selby
2) Cheick Diallo
3) Cliff Alexander
4) Wayne Selden
5) Carlton Bragg

as much as I can't stand KU, i don't think i would put Wiggins or Embiid on that list. Both were pretty nice players at KU, from what I saw, and they both doing well in the league.
