No one else is on their level right now. If Mitchell is a top 5 team the west is weak this year. I'm not trying to disrespect Mitchell but from what I saw Friday they are not as good as the last two teams I saw Andrews play. I don't know enough yet about Murphy, Thomasville or draughn

1A west baseball isn’t anywhere close to 1a east in baseball as a whole. There are a couple powerhouses but not near as many as what they have out east.

As a whole I would agree the east appears to be deeper however…
Of the last 10 1A state champions it’s split right down the middle at 5 each…
Baseball isn’t as competitive as it used to be even ten years ago. The west is very top heavy. The Murphy team I played against in 2010-2013 would have beat the Murphy state champion team. That team was absolutely loaded and didn’t win a state championship. Cherryville is a very good squad. Now, from a coaches perspective, I see these teams play and I’m like man, we wouldn’t have run rules everyone in this conference. Maybe it’s just because I’m on the outside looking in now but I swear the quality of baseball being played isn’t as good.

Yes sir I agree with you on quality. But I always thought it was just old man attitude (for me). My team finished second in 3A waaaay back in 81. I swear haven’t seen a team would score on us in last twenty years 🤷😂

It's the travel ball system. They don't practice as much as a team and the focus is on playing the games/tournaments. Game play is important, but practice, instruction, and player development just isn't the same. That's where teams are built.

Has anyone seen anything from North Rowan this year? I don't think they are top 4 by any means, but they are usually a solid squad. Could be a good game with Thomasville in weeks time.

I could have no hit most of the teams in the SMC this past year it seems like, that is, if I were pitching in my prime. I was never anything really good, but had hit 89 on the fastball and had a devastating curveball. Nowadays I feel like 89 would get it done by itself for any team in the SMC besides 2-3 hitters. It’s so sad to see baseball go in the direction it’s going. 10-12 year olds don’t need to be playing baseball at the rate they are. They get burnt out so fast and it’s so much wear and tear on their bodies. By the time it matters, they are shot in a lot of scenarios. I’m all about putting extra in to what you want to do, especially if you plan to pursue it at the next level but starting at 10-12 is too young to be playing baseball that much.

I think you have a top 3 and several teams capable of moving into 4th including my Mountaineers but we need improvement on both sides of the line to get there. ER, Thomasville, Draughn,Murphy, Swain, Heritage will have a say as well.
