Okay here we go! I assume someone will start this thread sooner or later so might start it! If Cal were to leave ( no way he is getting fired) on his own before next season who is your top 5 candidates that would seriously consider the job. Please no Rick Pitino mentions and Brad Stevens isn't coming either! I am not sure any of my top 5 would come either. My top choice would be a huge stretch! I will do the foolish pleasure of starting first!

1. Jay Wright-Villanova ( I know....)
2. Chris Beard-Texas Tech ( I know he is in the Bobby Knight tree but different coaching style)
3. Mark Few-Gonzaga ( Says he would never leave Gonzaga but would he....)
4.Eric Mussleman-Arkansas ( doing a great job there, great recruiter)
5. Dana Altmon-Oregon ( would do a good job calming the program after CAL and likes veteran players)

Bash away! There a lot of young great coaches out there like Wes Miller at UNC Greensboro and Bob Richey at Furman who are not ready yet but great coaching talents!

Leave it vacant. The way BBN turns on people I wouldn’t wish that job on my worst enemy. I’d definitely would not wish it on a coach I really like.

WTH ? Who turned on who ? Cal has been pissing down your back for years and telling you it’s rain but you think it’s the fans who turned ? Are you crazy ?

I won’t bash, but think mussleman would be the only real possibility.

I know you guys will think I’m crazy, but Nate Oats would check a lot of boxes.

I would actually go Kenny Payne. Now hear me out. I'm just being a UK homer. KP knows Kentucky basketball better than anyone, and is certainly equipped to handle the HC duties at Kentucky. He knows recruiting. Been around long enough to build a good staff. The bonus is, he's considered a 'Kentucky guy" now. (Yes, I know). So the fanbase might give him a year or so longer to let him get a shot, while they might turn on an outsider quicker.

I want Cal so I have not participated in any potential coach after Cal thread. I want the 2010-2015 Cal. Not the one making bizarro decisions and statements. He’s the man for UK and he’s got it in him. Now I want my state employee to deliver.

Kentucky Pays Calipari $10 million per year. I’m pretty sure there is an long list of coaches that would jack a bear to have that opportunity
Well sure....they say that all great AD's have a top 5 call list if they lose a major coach! Just wondering who would be on the Barnhart list? I know we don't care for his playing style but I bet Mitch would give Tony Bennett a call. Seems like a Mitch kind of guy!

This is precisely where I'm at, but I will admit the Nate Oats suggestion is intriguing for the future. He does have that swagger and was quick to call rat boy out when he shut things down by saying would he have done that if he was 4-0 LOL.

The last 2 years of our “offense”.....give me someone that has a philosophy and recruits to it. Bennet would kill it in the SEC. Wins don’t need to be pretty.

Lol what? BBN turned its back on Calipari?? That is absurd. Asking the coach to make the necessary changes to keep UK basketball where it’s supposed to be is not too much to ask.

Yeah but then he had to go kiss the ring to make sure the NCAA golden child didn’t get his feelings hurt.

My guess is Beard, Holtmann, Altman and Bennett would be near the top of the list.

Love Payne, but he doesn’t have personality to last here or succeed.

You try to get Few or Wright first. Make them say no to 7-8 mil. W a bump to the 9 if they produce the first 3 years.

If they say No bc they just love where they are (very likely), then you go after Beard, Drew (as the 2 more “proven” and Oats, Pope (as the hot up and comers w a fun style and potential to be here 20+ years if successful)

Neither Few nor Wright are going anywhere. They’ve previously been approached by NBA teams and major college programs and they always flat out say No. You can scratch them off the list.

Honestly, I think Scott Drew might be the best fit for UK. He understands the big time recruiting game, and is good at it. His teams are always well coached. And he seems to have the right kind of personality to deal with the Lexington media fishbowl.

I just can’t see Drew being successful here. What about John Beilein? Although he may be too old

But Pope has never been to the tournament. Hell, he’s never been to the NIT

Agree completely. Although Few and Wright have said they will never leave throw a 6-9 mill contract with incentives at them and see what happens. You never know.
Wright makes 3.8 and few makes 1.8(according to google). Doubling or tripling your salary can make you change your mind in a lot of situations.
Obviously Brad Stevens but he ain’t going anywhere.

I'm sticking with Cal and hoping it gets better. I still think he is the best man for the job he is just in the perfect storm right now. I can't say exactly why but for some reason Beard reminds me of a BCG situation where he is great in TX where he is but would be a flop here. Altman hasn't proven anything and doesn't seem at all like a UK coach to me. A UK coach is best when they have an edge. I don't think it would work at its best with a dull guy like Bennett. That doesn't mean he isn't a great coach, but for it to all come together at UK it has to be a great fit too. Nate Oats is the only one I can actually see with the job. That's the swagger, no fear winner, and upcoming star I can see being the next Pitino, Cal.

Wright, Stevens and Donovan have to be on the list. At least make them say no. Donovan has turned UK down more than once but he’s one coach the fans would get excited about. Then move on to Oats, Drew, etc.

I’m aware. Although they very well more than likely make it last year as he had them in the top 25 at one point and beat Gonzaga.

He has built BYU into a solid programIf he is able to maintain it for the next year or 2 he will be a very hot name for any job opening that isn’t one of the blue bloods. (Running a program is running a program from an administrative/organizational standpoint)

He would by no means be in your first or second tier candidates. Just saying if you got to that 3rd tier and with him having UK ties, he’s a name that wouldn’t be an awful hire, but definitely high risk/high reward. I mean, RP was at providence prior to UK (yes he had a F4).

Why do you think that? He was obviously here long enough that he gets it. I agree he isn't as 'showy' as Cal, but I wouldn't think he wouldn't have a strong enough personality.
