3A (only current HC)

Mike Brodowicz, Charlotte Catholic HS- Since taking over the Catholic program all he does is win and play for State Championships. He has to be at the top of any list any classifications in this state. He may be the fastest coach in the state history to 100 wins.

Stephen Davis, Dudley HS- State Championships, 10+ win season and college prospects he might lead the state. Year in and year out Coach Davis teams are tough and play there hearts out for him. Coach Davis will also lead the NC Shrine Bowl Team this year.

Shane Laws, A.C. Reynolds HS- Coach Laws has to be considered the King in the Mountains every year the Western Championship in his division must go through him and the Rockets. They were only a play away last year from bringing home the 3AA State Title.

Mike Newsome, AL Brown HS- Coach Newsome’s resume is as impressive as anyone in the state. His time at Butler is well documented. He gets the most out of every player on his team and his teams always maximize there potential.

John Kirby, Eastern Alamance HS- Coach Kirby is a great coach and an even better man. His teams play the right way and his program is first class all the way. His teams are always in the hunt for the Eastern Championships if not for some great West Rowan teams he may have 2 rings himself.

I don’t think you can really compare coaches. Some Coach’s have been completely incompetent and just rode the coat tails of talent to a few championships others have been exceptional, but just never had enough horses in the stable. Example, Crest had a head coach in Barnes who I thought was exceptional personally. However, after his departure, an assistant from within was hired and IMO the difference was not only balantly obvious...the Crest team (once again just in my opinion) quit on him after just two years as the head coach and he won a state championship he’s first year.

With that being said, I agree with the AC Reynolds and Catholic choices, those are both exceptional coaches.

This is always a tough topic but the first few choices in 3A are no brainers. Tie for first then you can sort a few from there.
1a. Mike Brodowicz, Catholic - Now before you throw stones because I'm a graduate and pretty close to the program I think you need to look at the body of work he has assembled in four years as Cougars head coach. 58-4, two state titles, a runner-up and a state semifinal appearance. His four loses have all been to teams that went on to win state titles. Brodowicz I think has brought the Cougars football program into the 21st Century, and that is no disrespect to the previous staff, but the staff he has assembled I truly believe is one of the best in the state, if not the best. Looking at what Catholic has coming back and coming through the pipeline I think the success will continue.
1b. Steve Davis, Dudley - Davis has been around for a bit longer than Brodowicz as a head coach, but has been just as successful. He has led the Panthers to four state titles and a state runner up finish. I really am always impressed by how physical his teams are. He coaches them up too, very disciplined and always seem to be exactly where they are supposed to be. In addition to being a class act as well. Just seems every year he gets the most out of his talent, while he's had some big time recruits he also wins with a lot of Jimmy and Joe type players too.
3. Shane Laws, AC Reynolds - Really good coach up in the mountains, if not for Weddington a few times he could have more than just one title. 75% winning percentage speaks for itself also. Really expect them to be in the mix again in 3AA in the west if not get back to a state title game.
4. Mike Newsome, AL Brown - While he hasn't had the success at Brown that he had at Butler he still is one of the best. Two state titles at Butler and has kept Kannapolis winning ever since he got there. After two rough seasons he's had Brown rebound and back to winning big in 3A. I think this year they could be a team to watch in 3AA and with Catholic down in 3A this might the year the breakthrough if they can stay healthy and eliminate mistakes.
5. Kevin Gillespie, Ashebro - Gillespie has quite the resume at Page. Led Page to 3 state title games, winning one title. I know his first year at Asheboro was rough, but I think he can right the ship and I expect Asheboro to be better in 2018. Not sure how much better, but I look at what he did at Page and have always been impressed. Wouldn't shock me to see him having the same success at Asheboro in a few years.

I am not sure that BRODOWICZ is the best coach but he is hands down the best recruiter.

Actually he and I sat down one day and said let's see how many kids we have had in his tenure come to Catholic that did not go to Holy Trinity Middle or St Marks or a Catholic middle school.
We found out that in 4+ years I think the number was 17ish have been on the team that did not go to a Catholic middle school, including Coach Brodowicz's own son Ben who did not attend Holy Trinity. Out of those 17, only 2 in four years have gone on to play any level of college football. Milan Howard, who graduated this year and went to Richmond and was at Catholic from freshman year, and Ben Brodowicz who went onto play at Butler.
So please if he is the best recruiter than your idea of what a recruiter is, is pretty off.

So basically every time a topic is formed on these 3A forums we’re just going to change the subject entirely to Catholic or Crest or some other school recruiting...

Seriously getting old guys. Can there be a new rule to prevent this? You’re ruining these boards and it needs to stop. If you truly feel that strongly about it, then please for the love of God call those schools and b!tch or the nchsaa.

So you act like you are so offended by the word RECRUITING when your school has benefitted from being one of the biggest RECRUTER of them all. But it look like RECRUITING has been down the last couple of years looking at CREST record.

Look bro, I just checked the board rules on this site, and actually an argument can be made that accusation without evidence is against the rules. So in understanding, unless you have actually evidence of any school recruiting against nchsaa rules that can be presented to the public your breaking the rules and are basically full of crap who whines because deep down you know KM will never see a state championship, so out of jealousy you attack other schools and cry about any disadvantage you can think of.

Anyways....I think Russell Stone could be in the conversation for top coaches in 3A, he is at Hickory now and has won every year he has been.

I laughed a little bit but it does get old. It's old to read the backhanded remarks from Crest fans denying that they had to basically use fake addresses to create a super team just to get two more rings. Shelby was leaving them behind like they normally do and they went above and beyond. I think it is comical to even bring up the rules when they are broke daily during the season by the King of all Crest posters. The broken rules and edgy post are what made this board popular. Watering it down with whiney snowflake responses are what made it boring. Make Preps Great Again!!! As far as going to the school board, it is simply not an option. One of the most corrupt supporters are one of the board members. The best coach in all of N.C. is the coach at Crest. Why? He coaches at Crest. Burns sucks, Crest farm team, 1 ring and Crest beat them that year too.... wait for it.

I’m gonna be honest boys you’ve got the right to state your opinion about any recruiting or bull crap you don’t like on the internet in general. But please stop hijacking these threads. Just start a thread called “schools recruiting” hell you can start a thread called “list of recruits that went to Crest” for all I care, but this thread is to talk about coaches. That’s all I’m saying. And that goes for every other thread out there. Just stay on topic and stop changing every thread into a recruiting pissing contest. It’s getting old

Not only is Coach Laws at ACR a good/great coach, he is an excellent role model for the players. I am sure many of the other coaches mentioned on this thread are as well and to me, that is very important in today's world. He may be the only male role model in some of the players' lives.
