Before I get crucified on this board, hear me out. I love our team, university and history, but there are a lot of teams with Wildcats as their name/ mascot so would you ever support a name change to give more differentiation?
I understand we are ThE Wildcats, but we have seen where other teams have changed their name and adoption is fairly quick like Red Storm, Orange, etc.
I wouldnt mind it if we had always been known as the Thoroughbreds- unique, appropriate, etc.
Many of the top programs have unique names. Like or hate them there are only one Jayhawks, Tar Heels, and few Blue Devils, Bruins (thank God only one Hoosiers). Just a question as we watch another Wildcat hopefully take down KU.
What do you think? Too much history or could the history not be an issue?
What name would you chose if we did?

Where did you come up with this gem? This might be the worst idea of all time. This thread has potential to be towns walk thread good. You don't just change your name. We aren't the Washington redskins. It's something that has developed over time or affiliated with our team. I get what you're saying but the notion is a bad one

Sorry to have an opinion or want to ask a question. Perhaps I should have just started another post with who o think leaves or how much I hate Duke? I’ve just always hated that other teams have our same name. Other schools take a great deal of pride being the only one and being known just by their mascot.
At least you said maybe, I guess.

I agree it’s not a great idea, but after a few years I doubt people would really care. The Orange kept their history, fans and not a big deal after a few years.
I don’t really think we would or even should do it, but was curious what others would say as we get tired of hearing Wildcats in so many games this year.

Any change to any mascot has been for political reasons. I don’t think Wildcats offends anyone.

ITa barney taking an informal poll.

How about the kentucky “fried chickens”. The UK King’s??? Maybe the Kentucky “bourbon barrels” or just the Kentucky “Bourbon”?? I mean if you can have a boilermakers surely need the bourbon

It was just a conversation. I was at the game against Davisdon in Boise and again in atlanta vs K-State and was just annoyed that they have the same “Let’s go Wildcats” cheers and gear. I don’t like Jayhawks, Targeels or Blue Devi’s, but you certainly don’t need anything more than the mascot to know who you mean. I realize it will never change and there is no real reason to change. Just wondered if I was alone. Evidentially I am. :)

You just joint right after our loss so I question your motives.

We should just sue the other wildcats for trademark infringement or something. There can only be one!

Don’t we all have to join sometime? You could also say I joined right before the offseason to stay informed or right after a loss because misery loves company.
i doubt some troll would really try to undermine our team by such a crazy idea. Maybe I’m typing this from Russia trying to unsettle the fabric of the wildcat faithful. Trust me, I will post some dumb stuff, but I bleed KY blue.

The perfect fit would have been something around horse racing. I'm still surprised neither of the big univerities in Ky used it and let it slip down to Murray, although I guess Kentucky has adopted it similar to Smokey at UT.

Wildcats are native animals to the state so it's fine. And really I think only Arizona ever refers to it as "Cats" and really no one does like we do. So it's a unique angle.

Better than the Tigers. My God, there's 4 of them in a 400 mile radius.

I agree. The horse racing angle makes the most sense and would be more appropriate. I like Wildcats and assume we were one of the first, if not the first, to use it.

I agree that there are too many wildcats, so how about we name them after the greatest racehorse of all time -- Man O War or to be correct for teams "Men O War" We could call the ladies teams Amazons. I think I will get a t-shirt made up like that.

Seems as if I read somewhere that the name "Wildcats" in regard to our athletics programs originated from a football game sometime around of after WWI, when someone said that we "fought like Wildcats" during a football game.

Very well......Wikipedia says..........

The nickname "Wildcats" became synonymous with UK shortly after a 6–2 football road victory over Illinois on October 9, 1909. Commandant Philip W. Corbusier, then head of the military department at old State University, told a group of students in a chapel service following the game that the Kentucky football team had "fought like Wildcats." Later the name Wildcats became more and more popular among UK followers as well as with members of the media. As a result, the nickname was adopted by the university.[2]

Herein lies the ridiculous posting that is a result of a open forum allowing anyone who wants to join and post. Here's is a guy who is not mostly illiterate, but also has no take. Maybe our board should have more standards when allowing bozos to just come on here and post.

Dumb idea, but you don’t seem to be a dumb guy/gal. Certainly not a troll. I’ve seen hundreds of dumber posts. Welcome to the board.
