The cult here might think the only way a Schiano return can be covered is positively, but the main focus by the national media will be on how bad we are that we have to resort to a coaching rerun in a desperate attempt to return to mediocrity.
LOL you are lost bro.

Do you realize how many clips are going to be on tv and Twitter of the Louisville game when schiano gets hired? That’s literally the only thing that people are going to talk about.

The idea by some people that a Schiano hire should be announced today is just another sign the cult of personality has gone off the deep end.

It is the 150th anniversary of the first college football game, a huge, big picture story involving Rutgers.

You don't take away from the historical event by announcing a "now" thing like a coaching hire the same day, even if they are bringing your Messiah back.
When you wiff so greatly without having a game this week or even a plan of today's event more than a week ahead what exactly are you taking away from?? Rutgers has done a terrible job on this and had years to plan for this day. And did nothing until the last minute. An announcement of Schiano could hide all their blunders leading up to today.

I really am trying to remain objective despite some reservations about Schiano II. Would it not be more accurate to emphasize his player development abilities rather than recruiting top 25 classes? As I recall the only time he had such a class was right before he left and that was a direct result of having the sense to be opportunistic when Wannstedt was fired. (Hafley, Cignetti and a third guy known for recruiting Brian A?) to improve the recruiting.

That is only true with the people for whom hiring Schiano is bringing back the Messiah.

To the real world a Schiano hire story isn't ALL positive. Rutger's long-time futility, what happened with him and Tennessee, and the historical underperformance of coaching second acts will also be part of the narrative.

It has nothing to do with being a pessimist. Today is a PR event to celebrate something that happened 150 years ago, and Rutgers involvement in it.

It is dumb PR and small minded thinking to piggyback something like a coaching hire onto that. With Rutgers having pulled the plug on Ash early, they and FSU are the only active story surrounding coaching hires right now. We will get plenty of coverage if we announced a hire tomorrow, Friday, or next week.
The cult here might think the only way a Schiano return can be covered is positively, but the main focus by the national media will be on how bad we are that we have to resort to a coaching rerun in a desperate attempt to return to mediocrity.

Yet your pessimism is shining through. Schiano created enthusiasm about the program and produced good teams. He also brought those teams to numerous (but minor) bowl games. Oh, and he put many players in the NFL. Many of which are getting great press as Rutgers alumni and winning Super Bowl rings. Again, which way would you like to look at it? Positively or negatively. I tend to look at it as the former and not "dumb and small minded". Rutgers is not going to get huge national press today I dont think. How much did they get on every 150 year promo on the major networks? All I see is mostly Notre Dame, Michigan and Alabama teams prominently displayed and celebrating something we started. I dont care when they announce the hire, but I dont think today would be detrimental to the Rutgers image which is way more than severely tarnished. Are you Keith Sargeant?? Embrace any good news we can get..we really need it.

To you the Schiano hire means only good news, that is not how the rest of the country will view the story.

Who the hell cares what they think? I am so over that. We are in the Big Ten now, we won. I stop caring about that a long time ago, basically before the press conference was over.

ALSO, to be 100% clear, it is not 100% sure thing he comes back. People need to be ready for that.

I don't care what they write in their story either.

My point was that you don't take today's anniversary which is a 100% positive and lump it in together with the Schiano hire, because like it or not that will not be covered as positively as people think.

I don't know if you watch the football shows on TV, most people actually want this to happen and thought what happen with Tennessee was BS.

I am taking ESPN, FOX sports, CBS Sports, SEC network, BTN, you name it.

NJ dot com might try to put a negative spin on it because they are scum and that is what they do.

You seem to be peering through the looking glass of the Star Liar. Today's anniversary is not going to be universally and nationally celebrated around Rutgers. Go watch the promos on the major networks for year 150 up until this point of the season. It's about the Blue Bloods. I'm not sure why you think the rest of the country will view as negative (and I dont care), but I'm willing to look from your viewpoint. Without a hire today, the perception might be "Rutgers started football 150 years ago today and they mostly have stunk since". If they hire Schiano, the narrative would be "Rutgers started football 150 years ago and have brought back their most successful coach to revive a program with little pulse". I'm willing to wager, if it were possible to guage, that rehiring Greg today gets more news (and positive at that) than just celebrating 150 years since we founded the game. I didnt see ESPN, Fox Sprts, etc. today. Was Rutgers prominently celebrated close to the top of the hour with all the bells and whistles on this special day? Hire a coach, especially Greg, and there will be more national coverage. Again, I don't think the nation cares that we started football. They care about the brand names and their accomplishments over 150 years. I also dont give a rat's *** about what anyone else thinks. I care about Rutgers. Schiano, whether he succeeds or not, is the best choice to pump some immediate juice into this program and start the resurrection process in my opinion. He is the only one available (and interested) who has the best chance to bring better players into the program and develop them. He has the credentials and knows the area like the back of his hand. I dont care today, tomorrow, or whenever. But it needs to be done soon.

Hiring anyone of quality would add to the day. It would actually show that they might care about football fans. RU football fans are the only ones that actually care about the 150th.

It's only 100% to Rutgers Football fans. Do you think anyone else in NJ care let alone the country.

Problem with the recruiting rankings (well there are many, but one of the them anyway) is that there is a huge difference among the 2 and 3 star prospects. There are those at that level that have multiple FBS and/or Power 5 offers. Then there are those where we are the only FBS offer. We tend to have a lot more of the latter. So while our overall ranking ain't so bad, if you really dig, what we are seeing on the field is not at all surprising.
Actually, it's extremely surprising. Generally over a multi-year period the team should play near the level of the recruiting ranking..at least within 20 spots, no? I remember Greg's teams being in the 35-40 range in recruiting and typically playing around that level on the field, with the exception of 2006 where we exceeded expectations and maybe 2010 where we had a rough season with some extenuating circumstances.

Do you really believe that? I see teams at a huge talent disadvantage win almost every single Saturday. That has NEVER been Rutgers, because we have never had a coach who could outscheme anyone.
I think the opportunity to outscheme people is somewhat correlated to the league payout.

In the Big Ten, every school (except RU and, to a lesser extent, MD at the moment) has ample money to hire very good, experienced coaches. They are still human and can make mistakes in game-prep. And college kids are prone to having an off day here and there for various reasons. But few Big Ten coaches will make poor decisions throughout the game simply by virtue of having attained a certain level of football coaching accomplishment prior to being hired.

Back in the Big East, where not all schools had the funding to hire a very good, experienced coach, it would probably have been easier to game-day coach our way to a win. Not that we seemed to do that very often.

I guess there are a couple coaches who come along, now and then, and have a team performing well above it's talent level on a consistent basis. That's the kind of coach we need. But I'm not sure that's the kind of coach we'll get. Just not that many of them out there.

Do you really think it is only a vocal minority?

Out of curiosity and respect, who do you see as a viable exciting option to rebuild this program?
Let's hope it is only a vocal minority. Because Schiano, even if he's hired, will not be around forever. So is the football program going to wither and die the next time he leaves the program? Or can we hire a competent and experienced head coach (instead of a Flood or Ash) and do just fine?

Adoration of a coach is how a program like Penn State winds up with a Sandusky situation. PSU, after the NCAA penalities ended, has done quite well without their cult hero, proving that the program is bigger than any coach or player.

Ohio State fans seemed to treat Urban Meyer the same way they treat players. No adoration. Respect and high expectations. The program is bigger than the coach or any player. If he's doing a good job, great. If not, next man up. Urban left. The next man is up and he's doing great.

Both those coaches won national championships. Schiano won nothing. So adoration for him is not only unhealthy and pointless, it's really kind of pathetic.

So hire him, if we can't find someone better. But let's skip the adoration.
