Ok, while we all sit and wait with baited breath for 17 year old high school football players to make a decision, I was rewatching a YouTube video of the 1978 Nebraska vs. OU game in Lincoln. I was at that game (I was a sophomore at UNL) and once the goal posts came down I followed some dudes who had one part of a post who proceeded to carry it down O street. I, and about 20,000 other people on O street that night, were euphoric.

So my question to everyone on here who is old enough to remember that game ( a game that saved Osborne's career): Where were you that day?

Watching at my grandparents' house. It was the first game I remember watching.

In the stands......probably not very far from where you were. We had won the ticket lottery that year and I think we were about the 35 yard line, East stadium about 20 rows up you young whippersnapper.

I was in the student section which was, if memory serves this old man, in the southwest end zone. I was about 75 rows up. I was there with my girlfriend, who was drunk and puked on a dude in front of me. Lol. So glad I am not 19 again

I was at the game as well and helped bring the goal post down. Unfortunately my ride back to Omaha wasn't in a celebratory mood like me so we left Lincoln soon after the toppling.

I seem to recall a little of that going on in our section too. Frat deal. The fraternities if I remember correctly drew for what seats they got and we hit the jackpot that year. About 35 yard line north side of East stadium. Ironically it was just a few rows down from where I sat at my first Husker/OU game with my dad when I had to be less than 10 years old. Don't remember a thing about the first game other than my dad's red felt cowboy hat with the N on it. Wish I had that thing.

I was there with my brother, Dad, Uncle. Sat up in the higher rows south stadium. First game I ever attended in Lincoln. The atmosphere before, during, and after was bigger than any other game I've gone to since then, including the 1986 night game against FSU, the 1994 game vs cu, 1992 vs cu (close second Halloween game).

I remember how damn cold it was, couldn't get warm until Nebraska scored their first td. I remember Billy Sims first td of the game, right to the south end zone, made it look so effortless. I remember saying to my brother "this is going to be a long game."

It's no wonder it ranks at the top as the best game ever in Lincoln. And if you want to see how tackling really should be done, watch that game, most of the time Nebraska players were in the right spot and made great tackles. Of course, with the kind of talent OU had on that team, they could also make players on defense look helpless, as they did from time to time to the Blackshirts.

We just had to follow the flow of the crowd when the stadium finally started to empty out, but what a time watching all the chaos on the field after the game. Somehow, and I don't know how, we managed to go into a bar and low and behold, it was a topless bar. I lived in Colorado at the time, so not knowing the lay of the land back then, I had no idea how we managed that. But at 16 years old, who was I to argue? That game still ranks as my all time favorite regular season game, it was an amazing contest to say the least.

Side note: Billy Sims was averaging 8 ypc coming into the game against Nebraska. Let that sink in, yikes. Oh yeah, back then, you didn't need a tunnel walk to amp up the crowd, you just were!

A 16 year old boy in a topless bar? Heaven on earth! lol Where was that? I did not know that was legal in Lincoln in 1978. I feel like I missed out!
But seriously, I love what you wrote here. It really captures that day. And I agree: to this day it remains the single greatest experience I have ever had at memorial stadium

I watched in the basement of my parents' house in Denver. I was 15 and a sophomore in high school. I was 8 when NU won the Game of the Century and then clobbered Alabama for the MNC. I had assumed that was our rightful place in the universe. Then came 6 losses in a row to OU, which at the time was stupefying and maddening. I didn't realize back then how much better OU's personnel was. For some reason, that '78 team inspired confidence. That was the team that truly established the NU O-Line tradition. NU just ran right at OU all day long, few surprises or tricks, and OU did not have an answer. Berns, Hipp, and Franklin broke what seemed like a million tackles that day. It was a beautiful thing to watch.

I was 10 years old. My parents always had a gang of guys out from Omaha to do some pheasant hunting around that time of the year. It was a bigger louder party than normal that day. Great game watching with all those guys who were all huge husker fans. I always had fun being the bird dog that went through the heavy cover. Probably lucky I didn't get shot as those guys were drunk most of the time they were out.

My favorite non-game part of this video is Frank Broyles' comment between 14:16-14:21. Think Tom Brady and Deflategate. :)

It really was THE game that began Osborne's move toward power football. Historic. And after the 71 season all those losses to OU were infuriating. So the 78 game really released a lot of pent up frustration

I really can't remember what street it was on since I was just following others. I think my Uncle, who went to games all the time, knew where it was and directed us there. I was just awestruck when we got in there because there were some very pretty girls in there.

But the game was the real star that day, I was so damn nervous just hoping Nebraska could stay with OU, that's how good I believed they were, SCARY good. But you had to be there or watch it to know how it unfolded into a classic much like the 1971 game in Norman. Such an electric atmosphere that may never be duplicated in Lincoln the rest of my life because no B1G team right now seems to be the OU monster of old, a rival that everyone paid attention to, and Nebraska isn't anywhere near the caliber of 1978. It would take a lot of success for Nebraska and another B1G rival to get to the point of a game like 1978.

I wish everyone that wasn't born then or even 20 years after this game could go back in time and witness such a contest. The build up to this game was crazy huge, it was on the news in Colorado every night during the "sportscast", and in the sports section of both Denver papers every day. What a game, what a memory.

That is exactly why I bring this game up. There is just no comparison. I wish everyone on this board who is young and does not remember this game could have been there. Then maybe they can understand some of us old farts a little better when we get a little testy after getting blown out by f$cking Iowa. lol

Oh, and by the way... some Uncle. Ha. I wish I had had an uncle like that...

No it wasn't. And how heart breaking was it to lose to Missouri the next week? AHHHH!!!

I was in Boulder watching Colorado get hammered, had my little "transistor" radio listening to the Missouri game. The OU game made Nebraska spend a little too much physically and emotionally, it was a hard loss to take. SI jinx of sorts since the Huskers were on the cover after the big win over the Sooners. But the Missouri game was pretty damn exciting, just not enough left in the tank, at HOME even, for the Huskers.

Stupid James Wilder. He ripped a tired and spent NU defense that had put it all out there a week before

Yep. But that was a decent Tiger team, too bad Nebraska wasn't able to play them a few weeks before OU. Side note: Simms averaged 12 ypc his first five totes against NU, no wonder I was so nervous before that game, I could see the destruction coming.

Unfortunately I also remember that loss to Missouri. And then having to play OU again in the Orange Bowl. Years later I saw a videotape of Tom Osborne and Bob Devaney when they were told by the Orange Bowl people that we were playing OU again. They just sat there, stunned and speechless with the person from the Orange Bowl saying "Hello? Hello?"

That was the Orange Bowl giving Nebraska the finger. And they ended up hurting themselves. The rematch sucked

Kind of ironic that OU had all those turnovers (thanks to a MASHING defensive effort) but Nebraska had the first two of the game. I aged 20 years for most of the game, but regained my youth when the clock hit 0:00!

I was in the student section, I was a sophomore as well. My girlfriend went back to the dorm late in the 4th Q and I got down on the field outside the endzone. The players were getting pissed and waving people off because people were starting to get into the actual endzone area. When the game was over we rushed the field, someone in front of me fell, some of us fell on him and people piled up on top of me. Until other people peeled the bodies off the pile, I couldn't breath, maybe for 30 seconds. I really thought I was going to die. Once I got up and hyperventilated I was freaked out and went back to the dorm to be with my girlfriend, so I missed all the craziness downtown. A few weeks later I went to a friend's house and he had an 8-inch piece of the goal post he cut off with a hacksaw when it was lying in the street downtown. He had it mounted very nicely at a trophy shop with a base and plaque. They next week she dumped me, I failed two tests and NU lost to Misery on a dreary day. I walked back to the dorm as depressed as I had been up to the day my dad died.

To this day I avoid standing crowds, NEVER get in the middle of them, and always plan for a way out in case of a stampede.
