Because people immigrating here have legal rights. They are not supposed to be detained longer than 72 hours. They are processed (normally). They have a couert date set and they show up in court to present their case for justifying seeking asylum and being given the right to seek citizenship.

And, if they were seeking to get away from asylum-protected conditions, Mexico is the place where they can. This is assuming they’re coming from one of the countries south of Mexico. In general, that is the case. Mexicans can seek asylum and will likely not be granted it.
It’s weird, he also says they show up to their court date. We know that isn’t true. We also know, >80% of asylum requests are rejected.
So, while yes, they can seek asylum, if they passed through Mexico to come to the US, it won’t be granted because they’re lying. And if they’re coming from Mexico and seeking asylum, they’re lying because they aren’t being persecuted by their Govt.
