I'm not necessarily being critical here, just curious if anyone can explain the rationale behind this. Pike does it almost every game if my memory serves me. Team makes a big basket (today was Harper trailing Geo with a 3 to cut it to 6 with 2:50 left, capping a 7-0 run) and Pike calls a timeout. I feel like it stifles the momentum and is a freebie for Wisconsin to regroup there.

I'm also pretty certain that was RU's final TO there. I'm not opposed to using them when needed but that seemed early to burn your final TO.

I hear ya, but two points: 1) Wisconsin was beating RU down the court the entire game and Pike probably wanted to make sure his defense was set and 2) to make sure the team understood what the trap/foul protocol was

Don’t watch much basketball? It’s a VERY common practice over the last 20+ years when trailing. Let’s you to set up your D, make D substitutions, and layout your next possession given the new score.

I watch plenty of basketball. I don't get it when Izzo does it, and I don't get it when Pike does it. The other team is on the ropes, keep punching. It's a free timeout for them to regroup.

Basketball is such a sport of runs. When you are on one and have all the momentum you ride it out. Not a fan of the strategy at all. Its coaches over-coaching. When you have a team flustered, the last thing you want is a timeout. Let your players play with momentum on their side

In the regular flow of a game, you keep the momentum rolling. With less that 2 minutes, you substitute to put your best defensive lineup out there, inform your players when and if you're going to foul, who to foul, and set up an offensive strategy for your next possession. EVERYONE needs to be on the same page. It's a no brainer.

There was almost 3 minutes left in the game, and each team had 5+ more possessions. It's impossible to script the whole rest of the game that far out.

I’d have to see how this is handled on a game by game basis before calling the coach out on using this strategy.

What I do know is that was a key defensive possession, and if we get a stop there we can cut it to a 1-possession game with 2 minutes left.

Their guy came up and buried a somewhat rushed and contested three, so tip your hat to them, but at the time I was glad he shot it, when they could have run more clock and gotten a higher percentage shot for two.
