is it time to hire a real OC? I love Dan but his play calling can be a little vanilla at times....bama and tsun....just seems to me that we don't make adjustments or have really any game plan on offense. thoughts? and if so, who?
Time for an OC?

Great idea. Lets bring Koenning back from Texas.
How many offensive school records did we break this year?
We were in the top 2-3 in the conference of every meaningful offensive category.

I'm thinking you should just stick to beer reviews. Our offense was fine this year. We ran the same type of plays against bama as we did lsu. Bama's defense was just better at stopping it.
yet everyone and their mama knew exactly what we were going to do....dak up the middle...dak up the middle...annnnnd...dak up the middle....
and hell no, I hated koenning and couldn't be happier with the season we have had....way better than I could have imagined.
this is a forum right?

How many times do you think we ran Dak up the against auburn or LSU? It was a lot. It just didn't work against OM and bama. The problem was not adjusting our gameplan. But to act like we did something different against everyone else except OM and bama is kinda shortsighted
I'm not saying hire or fire anyone. Fantastic season and looking forward to my trip to Miami BUT....our gameplan for our last game definitely didn't follow what previous teams that had some success against that opponent had done. They have a FAST defense. Other teams had success running straight at them. Shump had some good carries later in the game but we never established that "we're coming straight at you," physical style of gameplan. Early on we tried to attack them on the perimeter which is the last thing you want to do against a defense like that.
You attack an aggressive defense vertically in both your rushing & passing (see our secondary) gameplans. Not sweeps, quick screens, or other horizontal type plays. I'm just suggesting a little less hardheadedness.

I don't like the whole "Running Game Coordinator" and "Passing Game Coordinator" roles. Are they treating the two phases of offense so different that we become less flexible when we're on the field? Or is it a fancy way of saying co-coordinators?
A little off topic, but I wonder if the way of splitting your assistants up and assigning roles is the most optimal way to coach a team. It seems like things are done a certain way by every team because that's how everyone has always done it.

We did do something different. In the Auburn or LSU games, for example, we played a very high tempo and threw the ball a lot early in the game, including throws down field. In the Alabama and Ole Miss games, we played a much slower tempo and ran the ball a lot more early in the game. Simply put, we got conservative. Field position played a role in the Alabama game, but at the same time, poor field position didn't make us conservative against LSU. Changing the OC isn't going to keep you from going conservative. That is a decision made by the HC.
Having said all of that , I think Mullen and his staff did an incredible job with this team, and wouldn't trade him for anyone. I also criticize Cohen for bunting too much, I think it costs us runs and very occassionaly a game. But Cohen overall makes us so much better and wins so many games, it just comes with it. Mullen is similar.
We didn't have the type of running game that you could just line up and power it over the other team. It was based upon running plays at a high tempo and keeping the secondary and linebackers on their heels with the passing game. Once we stopped doing that, we got very predictable. It isn't that "Dak up the middle" wasn't a good play, it just wasn't a good play when the other team knew you were about to run it.

Two of the best defenses in the country slowed us down.
We finished ninth in total yards per game IN THE COUNTRY and we play in the SEC West. 17, dude. Sometimes the **** doesn't work against awesome defenses. It was basically a problem with the O-Line going up against defensive fronts that were a little more bad *** on that given day.

Exactly.
Everyone freaking out over out offense against the TWO BEST DEFENSES IN THE COUNTRY is getting ridiculous. Losing to OM has just made some people go completely dumb. It's as if these people are the mythical "rather go 1-11 and beat OM than 11-1 and lose to OM" creature.

I'm not freaking out by any means. I can honestly say a full week plus after the game the same thing I said that night. Our gameplan was awful. That doesn't mean another would've worked but I would've liked to have seen it try.
On another note we got out played. The players from the other sideline played as if the game meant more to them. Gameplans & play calling don't make as much difference as that factor does.
The thread was about offense so I kept it there but our defensive gameplan was garbage too. Do I want to fire Collins? Nope. I actually think he needs a raise.

Our passing offense is pretty sophisticated compared to most of our spread team brethren. We run alot of option routes - 10-15 yard curls, slants, back shoulder fade throws, etc. I'd like to see us simplify some of that, especially if we're having trouble protecting (Bama & OM games).
I'm far from a FB expert as some on here are, but I think our main problem at the Alabama game that we were starstruck. Maybe it was playing Alabama for big stakes, maybe it was 100,000+ unfriendly fans ... but the whole team and even Mullen seemed to me to be uptight and nervous. We did much better in the second half but it was too little too late.
At OM, our offense played pretty well. Our defense let us down, and that was an OM offense that at best is mediocre. Three big plays lost the game for us, and all were attributable to a weak secondary ... and a hotter than usual Bo. I guess it boils down to them wanting the game more than we did for some reason. There shouldn't be anything particularly hostile about playing in Oxford, especially compared to Baton Rouge.

We came out slinging the ball against LSU. The opening drive had 48 passing and 8 rushing yards (4 pass plays, 2 run plays). The second TD drive of ours (the 98 yard drive) had 70 yards passing (2 plays) and 28 yards rushing (3 plays). We were a major pass threat against LSU. The Dak up the middle on 3rd and short worked beautifully because we were in a situation where they only had 5 guys in the box. Watch
Dak just had to beat the linebacker himself and the safety was concerned with our two receivers on the short side of the field. They were also playing up, meaning our WRs could block.
Compare that to the UM game. Go to the 1h 44m mark.
They even show a little graphic with the low passing yardage total. They have 6 guys right up front and their safeties are waiting to pounce. The play falls apart before Dak can even leave the pocket. In fact, a quick pass to our slot guy would have gotten us a first down, if not 6. If we hadn't been stubborn about running it up the middle and checked out of that play we could have won. As it was, we missed a FG.

And Dan kept trying to run it up the middle. It wasn't there and he failed to adjust against Ole Miss.
Vs Bama he did make some changes and we had a good 2nd half offensively.
Dan's offense relies on being able to run between the tackles, Bama and Ole Miss both took that away from us.
Offense was not our problem, bro. Stop Blake Sims on those 3rd and longs and we probably win that game. Don't give up the big plays and we were in position to win the Egg Bowl. Talk about knocking the wind out of us after we went ahead on that long pass to Evan Ingram. Even still, game was not over until that Jaylen Walton run. What a back breaker. I can still see Will Redmond's titty bump in the backfield.
That being said, I would not mind if we hired that player from EMCC. His offenses smoke. Let Mullen manage. One thing that goes noticed is the way Mullen runs the program. He should embrace that and take his hands off the offense - I mean he already hired a good quarterback coach. It is his next progression as a coach, and frees him up to make better decisions in-game. Maybe he would have re-thought that ignorant fake punt against Auburn if he was thinking more big-picture and was looking at Auburn's set up.

I wish folks would go back and watch both the Bama and tsun replays ( the full versions ) and keep a pen and paper handy and keep track of how many times we actually ran Dak up the middle on planned plays. I think most of the folks who have been clamoring about how many times we did it would be surprised at how few times we actually tried Dak up the middle on planned runs.
I watched both games, not with a pen and paper. But I can tell you for a fact we ran Dak up the middle WAY too often in both of them. Dan is a great coach and a great offensive coordinator. But he's too much in love with the QB power run up the middle.
He would do it with Tebow too in big games. It's not something new for him and I guess he just goes super conservative. It's not something new for him.
Nope ...
I disagree with your statement that we need a new OC and here is 'why' I disagree ...
MSU had one of the most potent and balanced attacks in the SEC. STATE LED THE SEC IN TOTAL OFFENSE at 506.2 yards per game. Dak was #4 in the SEC in passing yards and only needs 60 yards to finish at over 1000 yards rushing. Josh Robinson has 1128 yards rushing and 370 yards receiving.
'If' "everyone and their mama knew exactly what we were going to do" as you said, then they did a really poor job of stopping us. We currently have 2878 yards rushing and 3196 yards passing.
Our problem is clearly ... stopping the pass where we gave up 3422 yards.

With your ability to see into the future
Did you know Dak was going to make it on 4th and 2 at the end of the '13 Egg Bowl?

Yeah. Most Gators would point to calls like that as to why they weren't/aren't crazy about bringing Mullen back as the HC of UF.
The key part of that play was that we had a RB in the backfield and Dak actually ran outside the tackle. Had Ballard not made his block Dak wouldn't have made a first down. Their defense was expecting up the middle too.
Rewatching that play in the 2008 Florida game, it was puzzling to see why Tebow didn't check out of that play with the defense they were showing. He could have called a run to his right and gotten a touchdown.

No doubt about it. Florida's offense took a considerable step back in 2009. Take Tebow away in 2010 and they were downright terrible. There is simply no basis for complaining about Mullen's offensive pedigree. It can get better though, as all things can. He needs to hire a coordinator and manage more effectively to do so.
