We (and other countries) put sanctions on Russia for their Crimea and Ukraine expeditions. Removing those sanctions would be of benefit to Exxon who would move forward with projects in Russia that are now held up by those sanctions. Being a former Exxon CEO and medal wearing friend of Russia is of concern to some on this issue and regarding his friendly relationship with Russia, a traditional enemy of the U.S.

You are making a lot of assumptions. Can you provide a link that suggests that we are removing sanctions on Russia? Perhaps they plan to lift these sanction secretely out of the eyes of the thousands of govt watchdogs, congress and the press?
