Tiebreakers

Tiebreakers are going to be important to this year's seedings - due to rule that you can't be seeded before someone else in your conference ranked ahead of you.

Anyone know the results of tiebreakers - Monroe, Cuthbertson, Marvin Ridge?

I anticipate one between - N. Guilford, E. Alamance, and NE Guilford?

Brian,
Monroe, Cuthbertson and Marvin Ridge shouldn't where they finish in conference. They will all be at-large bids and can be seeded by their adjusted max preps rankings which currently are Marvin Ridge at 39, Monroe at 50 and Cuthbertson at 69.

The others will be a draw if N E Guilford wins, then one of them will be a second place in conference and the other two will be at large bids. If N E Guilford should lose then Eastern Alamance will be second place and the other two will be at large.

I think situations like Marvin Ridge, Cuthbertson, Monroe are settled by the adjusted Max Preps rankings...right?

You are right, based on what NCHSSA seeding says, Marvin Ridge would be 3AA and seeded at large by their adjusted rankings (39) and Monroe would be 3A and seeded as an at large with a ranking of 50. Cuthbertson would be out due to a ranking of 69.
Easiest way to tell who is in and who is out is to take the top 66 ranked teams ( I say 66 because you would have to remove Hunt and Fike) by the max preps adjusted rankings and those would be the teams that make the playoffs.

Brian,
I saw your predictions on your site and have two questions.
1. In 3A west shouldn't Hickory be in due to a Adjusted Max preps ranking of 59. This would move Aycock out ranked at 67th out and move East Rowan to the east.
2. In the 3AA you have West Bruswick in ranked at 70th, shouldn't Southern Durham be in ranked at 64th.

I don't think the Adjusted Maxpreps Rankings break ties within the conference. I think each conference breaks their own ties (coin flip or drawing) prior to any playoff seeding being done. Each conference sends in their conference final seedings (after the tie breakers are done), from there if there are ties with other conferences based on record then the AMR will determine who gets in. If a conference has a three way tie for 3rd place a drawing determines who gets which spot, not AMR.

That is my understanding as well. If Cuthbertson were to win the drawing, Marvin Ridge and Monroe would both be out because Cuthbertson is out of the top 64 and the other two can't be put in before them. Hickory is out because they lost to St. Stephens (who is out) head to head and are behind them. Same with S. Durham - they are behind Orange, who is out.

I just got a message that the order after the drawing is....

4. Monroe
5. Marvin Ridge
6. Cuthbertson

A drawing? Bullsh!t! Why have the power poll. To me that was one of the absolute main reasons to have it. Stupid.

It's my understanding that each conference can choose in their bylaws how to break ties. They can use the ADR, or flip a coin, or draw, or even throw darts at a board, it's totally up to each conference to break their own ties.

That is fine but in the case of Union County one school making the playoffs from the draw would have appeared to knock two teams out of the playoffs that were much higher rank in the power polls. Two make it or one makes it. Cuthbertson ended up third of three so it did not happen but it may have been better in the long term if Cutty would have got in and left the other two out (IF that in fact is how it would have worked).

Another coach was told to be at a game in the Triad last night in case school A upset school B which would put them in a three way tie. He was under the impression the poll was used. He also thought a main reason for the power poll was due to the straw drawing.

I think the poll should be used and all conferences should do it the same way. Like I said on another board, if it happens to a conference where one team gets in and two are left out maybe they will change their way of breaking ties. Conferences can use the poll, but they have to agree to it in the conference bylaws. I'm sure had Cuthbertson had won the draw, the SCC would reconsider how they break ties from that point on.
