Hd6,

You have to replace Joel T.

You brought him on the show as a baseball guy to strengthen your self described weakness on MSU Baseball. However, it has become apparent that, outside of the Atlanta Braves, Joel is not knowledgeable about sports.

It first crossed the line when he claimed Chipper Jones as the best switch hitter of All time. And persisted in that conclusion even after you informed him Mickey Mantle was a switch hitter. His response of "I never saw Mantle play" is no5 acceptable for a baseball expert.

This is excaerbwlted on today's show with his insistance that Ken Griffey Jr is the most transcendent baseball player ever. Not Mantle, DiMaggio, Ruth, or Cobb. When clarified to the past 30 years, no mention of Bo Jackson, arod, Jeter, McGuire, bonds, or Nolan Ryan.

I find myself hoping for 22 minute shows where it’s just you.

I think Griffey did as much for the game as any other player. Maybe it’s a generational thing, but if you were a kid in 90’s, he was a rock star.

Couldn’t agree more. Bo hit .250 with 141 homers. Nolan Ryan lost 292 games. I was the biggest McGwire fan but, steroids. A-Rod steroids, Bonds steroids.

Jeter might have a case but look at it this way. If Seattle had drafted Jeter he probably doesn’t even make it into the conversation, whereas had JR Griffey been drafted a Yankee he would have hit 750 homers with that short RF porch and been twice the rock star he already was.

A few things:
- Yes, Mantle was the greatest switch hitter of all time. But I’m a Braves guy, so the preceding sentence might be the only time I’ll ever actually admit it. (And by the way, Chipper holds his own head to head vs Mantle. Mantle is better, but it’s not by leaps and bounds.)
- Griffey was everywhere in the 90s. Commercials. Had video games named after him. Was in a movie or 2. Everyone of my baseball loving buddies growing up was mimicking that stance in the backyard. A lot of folks around my age still wear hats backward today and they started it because Jr. did. He’s of course not on Jordan’s level, etc. But we’re talking about only baseball here. Find me someone around 35 years old that has always loved baseball and I guarantee you Jr. is easily one of the Top 5-10 most recognizable baseball players of their lifetime.
- Lastly, if you don’t like me on Thunder and Lightning, you can kick rocks and pound sand. Y’all will have to drag my Southern.... Wait, that all didn’t work out so well for the last guy.

Sigh. This is what I mean. Being a "Braves guy" should not mean you ignore that there might have been a better player. That's being stupid. If I, an MSU guy, said Dak Prescott is the best QB in SEC History, I'd be, rightfully, laughed out of the room.

In comparing Jones VS Mantle, Jones is 20 behind in WAR, has 300 more hits in 800 more at bats (playing more games per season), has 68 fewer home runs, fewer RBI, fewer Stolen bases, and, by leaps and bounds, fewer Triple Crowns, fewer MVP's, and fewer Rings. Mantle was the best player on the best team in baseball for a decade all with a torn ACL. That's where your argument falls apart.

As for Griffey. Way to narrow the scope. Is he the Most Transcendent or the Top 5-10 "Recognizable" Why not just say most popular among Ackerman kids that love the Braves? Nolan Ryan, Ripken, Frank Thomas, Pete Rose, and Bo Jackson have video Games named for them. All were on commercials.

As for pounding Rocks and Kicking sand. How about you be more prepared and bring information? Instead of begging for free coffee. Example: When Brian asked about Rufus Harvey signing, since you cover Starkville High School, had no information. You didn't know. Another example, your info from Steve Spurrier was a winding story about nothing. You never told us what he said.

I won't even get to the offseason shows where you often admit you did no research and don't know about the topic of the day.

What is your deal, man? It was a freaking podcast about random sports topics. His opinions are different from yours, so what?

I’m gonna wager that you’re in the extreme minority with this “Joel needs to go” opinion. He does a good job and I enjoy the dynamic that he and Brian have.

I think Shelton's other points are really just differences of opinions (except for the begging for free coffee, haha), but I think the point above is fair.

When y'all do opponent previews or position breakdowns, a little more research before the show would go a long way. Seems like most of the offseason SEC previews are "well, I don't know a darn thing about Mizzou, but...". Or yall will be breaking down the DB's over the summer and will not have a clue which spots the guys are even practicing. For example, Brian Cole was at nickel all spring and y'all are talking like he would be playing deep. I'm 115 miles from Starkville and I know he's practiced exclusively at nickel, how do y'all not know that? Just one example.

I'm going to listen to the show regardless because y'all are talking State sports daily, you put it together well, it's a fun show, and I'm a State junkie. But just as constructive criticism from a loyal listener, a little more research would improve the product.

Chipper drove in more runs than Mantle. Do your research. (Chipper also hit for a higher average, struck out far less on average and had a longer career and in my opinion, longevity is at least a small part of the equation).

As for Griffey, it was a conversation where I literally said, on air, I was looking at the last 30 years of baseball only. Ripken, Ryan and those guys were great, but with Griffey in the 90s, white kids loved him. Black kids loved him. Everyone loved him. He was the face of baseball in many ways during his prime, again in my opinion.

Rufus Harvey - just because Brian says I cover Starkville High School doesn’t mean I know every player on the team inside and out. I covered 2 Starkville games last year. Talked to Rufus once in like October or November. That sound like enough info for me to give you an informed opinion on him? If I don’t know, I’m gonna say I don’t know. I passed along what I knew - that Rufus wanted that MSU offer all along so it’d be a shock if he didn’t sign with State on signing day. And he did.

As for the offseason shows, this podcast isn’t my job. I sincerely appreciate everyone listening, more than you all know, but it’s a hobby for me and something I just do because I enjoy it. I’ve got a life and a wife and two kids that are 3 1/2 and under. Not to mention two other real jobs that pay me actual money. So I’m probably not gonna spend much time over the next few months pouring through the New Mexico media guide because a couple folks on SixPack think the podcast they get for free isn’t good enough. Will I look at some stuff to stay informed? Sure. Although I’m sure that won’t be enough for some.

And if Brian ever wants to tell me to kick rocks and pound sand, he can do so. I’ll buy him a Coke, give him a big old hug and be on my way. Until then, I’m gonna continue to Wooooo a couple times a day.

Agreed. In his prime, Griffey was widely regarded as perhaps the greatest all-around baseball player to ever take the field. Finding someone who was athletic enough to play CF at the MLB Gold Glove level and also powerful enough to hit 40-50 HR’s was and still is an extreme rarity...with only Willie Mays really being comparable. And he was pretty much the only superstar of his generation to not be popped for steroids. The guy spent literally the last 50% of his career fighting injuries, and still hit 630 HR’s and collected over 1800 RBI’s. Quite remarkable.

Ill be honest, if Griffey never had to fight the injury bug as often as he did he would have challenged for the homerun crown before Bonds did and would be a top 5 player all time.

Actually, Brian had the biggest blunder on the Rumblings podcast. The former Bulldog football guy who is now a male model is Heath HUTCHINS, not Hopkins.

You do realize that is part of the sales shtick, right? They are playing it up as being really good coffee, something he really wants, giving a testimonial of sorts. Thereby other people want to try the really good coffee. Advertising 101

I've enjoyed the switch hitter debate, but if you are having a serious discussion about it you have to include Eddie Murray. Murray has more hits, 2B (just 11 more than Jones), and RBI than Mantle and Jones. He's 32 HR behind Mantle. His average is the least of the three, and he certainly had more ABs than the others. But I could make a case for him being as productive a switcher as the others. Plus, he is the only switcher in the 3000/500 elite group of six.

I literally logged in just to upvote that last point. That was gold

I don't personally agree with your Griffey pick for baseball(I think it's Ruth), but it's easily subjective when talking about the Top 5-8 baseball players of all time. There a much deeper history there than virtually any other sport that we could be talking about

People can say what they want, but I enjoy y'all's show. Cheers!

My Bad. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mantlmi01.shtml and https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/jonesch06.shtml since you'll be too lazy to look it up.

Chipper had a higher average by 5 points 298 to 302. Mantle scored more runs, was on base more, higher slugging.

And this is exactly my problem Joel. Mantel had an 18 year career to Jones 19. So your "longevity" argument is ********. You don't do your work. I'm a guy on a message board. Your job is sports.

For Griffey, That's another of my issues. Sports started before 1985. You seem to not care about that. Griffey was the face of baseball during his prime. So were they guys I listed.

You stumped for Hrvey and told us how great he was. How we should sign him. Then when it come to when we want good info, from someone that has watched him for years, you tell us to talk to Robbie. Guess what Robbie is not on the Show. Maybe he should be...

My bad. I thought you were a professional. And I thought one of your paying jobs was to cover MSU sports. My bad. Didn't know you were a hack.

Since you just admitted to slacking off and not caring what the audience thinks. good luck.

I should probably stop, but I can't resist. I'm drinking StrangeBrew coffee as I type by the way. I'd encourage you to do the same if you're ever in Starkville.

No more on the Mantle-Chipper stuff. Mantle was better. I agree. The end. Don't even know why you're still talking about it. Mantle can still be the best and Chipper can be not too far behind. Don't know why that's even debatable.

No more on Griffey either. I brought up Griffey because I was specifically talking about, if we had to pick an all-around popular baseball player from my lifetime, who would it be? For me, my opinion was Griffey might be the guy and he's at least in the conversation. Again, my opinion, though it seems others might agree with me on that opinion.

I will delve a little deeper on Harvey. I do know he's good. I've seen him excel on a few Fridays the last several years and I've even watched him shine in spring practices when the lights aren't as bright. I did think MSU should offer him. That doesn't mean I could tell you what the kid was thinking. I don't cover recruiting. I don't call these guys and seek them out and ask them what school is their favorite, etc. All I knew was that he was really good, that he always wanted the MSU offer and I thought he'd sign if he got it. So that's all I said. I'm not gonna BS you guys and pretend to know more than I do.

As for being a hack, I never made the claim to be the world's greatest podcaster or journalist. But I do work pretty freaking hard and was one of the two finalists for Mississippi Sportswriter of the Year last year and only lost to the greatest sportswriter this state has ever seen, so at least a few folks thought I was decent.

I got a feeling nothing I can say is gonna change your opinion. And that's fine. Just trying to explain things. Whether you like the show or just hate listen to get mad at me for opinions, thanks for tuning in. If you're ever over this way, I'll buy you the free coffee at StrangeBrew and I can tell you how Maddux was the best pitcher of all-time.

Yes on Rose, except for the power hitting. What's interesting is that Rose outhit Murray by 1,000 hits, but had 600 less RBI than Murray. Guess that's life as a lead-off guy in the NL.......

I agree, I just meant his stardom would have soared if doing it as a Yankee while winning World Series. I love Jeter, but play his career with any other team and he’s a much better version of Craig Biggio.

Jeter has to be a a Yankee to be a superstar, Junior didn’t.

Fair enough.

Being 600 miles away, I never read your work. I thought you were getting paid ( since you mentioned getting a paycheck for the podcast before) and would take that job as seriously as your main job that's closely related (covering MSU sports). Instead, I saw someone that never sounded like he likes his job, was unprepared, and lazy. I see now that it's just a hobby.

I just thought that you took the podcast more seriously than you do. I'll lower my expectations for your knowledge and preparedness.

As for strange brew. Love it. Glad they are a sponsor. Just stop asking for others to buy you coffee. It comes off sounding desperate.

Anyway thanks for the interaction.

I get paid now. I’ve done it in the past for free. Still, I mean it’s not anywhere near enough that if I ever can’t do it, that I’d even hardly notice. And that’s not a complaint. I’m thankful for every dime. Just saying the number would have to go way, way, way up before this was anything more than just something I like doing since I can find the time to do so.

WAIT A DADGUM MINUTE!!!

Brian doesn't pay you? What the hell is he thinking??!!

Hey man, I think you do a good job and enjoy your work.

I have a small request, whenever HD6 asks you a question, you always let out this loud “errahh”. Please stop. I don’t know why but I hate it. If you don’t stop, I’ll still listen.

LOL. Didn’t even realize I was doing it.

Man, between show prep complaints, coffee talk and annoying sounds I make, some of y’all are tough to please.

Again though, it’s really cool y’all listen and care. So thank you to the ones that genuinely like the show and the ones that just listen and put up with it.
