Yant has the want, along with a lot of size and good open field running. No idea about pass pro. He can be a factor if he keeps working.
I heard on the radio today that Yant was actually a 4 star back on one service but was an academic risk who couldn't get in to an SEC school. I would bet money that he is on scholarship this fall with Thompkins leaving.

Smh... Thought talent wise he was top 2 but I guess I saw this coming. This is becoming a disturbing trend at N...

He was buried on the depth chart after spring ball. He wasn't getting it done. That's on him. He supposedly had overcome the knee surgeries physically but it sounds like his practice performance was inconsistent. He got as high as #2 on the depth chart last fall in part due to injuries to other backs, but it appears that Ervin, Yant. Scott and maybe Morrison were all above him at the end of spring. We've got some very talented guys on the roster now I think. That's not even considering Johnson and Stepp.

I did a quick search for articles and rankings for him. Found a Nebraska article that said he was a 3* but most sites show him as unranked but I could have missed something. His HS stats weren't all that amazing, at least the ones listed. Rivals shows he was offered (self reported remember) by Ole Miss, NE, Southern Miss and UAB. He was thought to be an ILB prospect primarily.

He wasn't getting in to Ole MIss it sounds like. Somebody on I think 590 today had said he was a 4 star on one service. I suppose it's possible he was downgraded after his senior year. Let's hope he wasn't one of the historical spring game heroes we never see again.

Yant, will be the 6th or 7th back come fall. He looked good in the spring game, against 5th string walkons. He’s decent at best.

You only have to fog a mirror to get into Ole Miss as a football player.
I can see why a team would take a pass on Yant. Big kid, a bit on the chubby side, upside down on the school thing. But I can definitely see why you give a kid like Yant a walk-in invite. If he ends up qualifying and does some work on his body and the game, he can play P5 football.

Yant isn't a walk-on. He got the Thayer County scholarship.

Play calling isn’t on Held..

Frost has yet to really rely on the run game. You saw him do this on the last game of the year with Miles, and things looked good, but usually Frost is too busy trying to be fancy. That isn’t on Held either.
Developing and "coaching up" the backs is.

i think many people would say its actually easier to get into nebraska than any SEC school.
in fact, i think there have been a few recruits who went to nebraska because they couldn't get into their first choice......a SEC school.
its ironic because i remember the days when neb fan would throw slurs at other schools for accepting juco player.s like neb was above taking players with academic risks.
now its neb who is taking more academic risks than your average program.
i wonder why?
the quality of education has NOTHING to do with number of academic all americans
you can have the worst rated education in america and have the most academic all americans. the 2 things have nothing to do with each other.

The toe stubber in the SEC is that they won't accept some online course credits that the B1G allows it's schools to use if they want. We've had at least one guy come to NU because they didn't qualify for an SEC school. I think there was an SEC school a while back that had some issue with people falsifying online course work to get eligible so they put restrictions on them.

I hope he does get a scholarship and contributes, he’s fun to watch. He might not be your feature back, but I can see him getting some playing time. It’s been awhile since we had a guy who can run up the middle with some attitude and we need some attitude at every position.

I would prefer he contribute, then get a scholarship. I’ve seen enough scholarship, followed by little/no contribution.

It's interesting to me that all of these transfer kids who are pissed about the lack of playing time or getting "screwed" by the coaching staff always go on to Twitter and say such glowing & inspirational goodbyes.

Well that turned out to be a wasted use of a scholarship on a damaged recruit.

Wonder if he was "encouraged" to leave in order to free up a scholarship or if he gave up on his own.
The timing of it makes it pretty obvious to me. He quit right before the team was getting started with summer workouts. He probably went home and thought it over, disagreed where he should be on the depth chart and decided to move on.

I agree 100%. Yant is a good football player and if they want to keep him beyond next season, they will have to give him a scholarship. I think quite a few of the walk-ons these days are committed to staying only a year or two, maybe three. Otherwise they are going to move on. The college costs these days is too high. It makes sense.

He was worth the risk, but I sure get tired of seeing these high risk high reward guys leave before they contribute.
Agree. We will always have to take a flyer on him, the Mannings, etc. kids with major talent aren’t going to pick Neb over other schools if we’re honest. We’ll get the occasional homegrown kid, but these others that everyone thinks we stole or found a needle in the haystack, in most cases the local schools haven’t even offered. Our local beat writers who get paid to sell “the amazing recruit plucked out of XYZ” how’s it working 🙄
