This whole handout business makes me uncomfortable. I thought Drebin did a good job explaining it, but still.

What was in the bill from the Republican side that wasn't coronavirus related?

Nothing. You can argue about the corporate bail out, but with the provisions for stock buy backs, CEO salary freeze for 2 years, etc, all of that was still in debate. The vote was not to send a final bill but to limit debate for another 30 hours. And after that still had to be approved by the House with whatever modifications were going to be added. But it certainly didnt have a grab bag of unions, green new deal, etc. They have badly miscalculated if they think destroying the economy is going to help them politically. They can come to their senses or disappear as a major party.

Stimulus to workers and families is one thing.

But, whatever you call this handout/bailout/stimulus to giant corporations a couple weeks into a semi-stutdown after making out like bandits during an unprecedented 12 year bull market is ********.

Man the 17 up and be responsible. Invest in your workers, the company, and the future, not your 17ing corporate salaries.

If the Democrats have legitimate concerns related to how the COVID-19 funding is being handled, then negotiate. If they want to throw things in the bill (like abortion funding) then yes, they're being jerks. It should have absolutely no unrelated funding in it. In fact, having urelated funding to any bill should never be allowed.

Exactly. I don’t understand the thinking that all big business is inherently bad. News flash: if a company loses a bunch of money, its employees are going to suffer for it and many people might lose their jobs.

Not saying that all corporations are inherently good, but they sure do allow a lot of people to have jobs.

Has anyone in thia thread said or even suggested that all big business is bad?

I don't think anyone who considers himself fiscally responsible is comfortable with handouts. I was 1000% against the bailouts in 2008 because many of those corporations brought the crisis onto themselves. But this is different. I just don't see how the government, for example, can tell people to stop traveling and then allow the major airlines and hotel chains to go bankrupt as a result. It would be different if their mismanagement led to it.

The ultimate goal of this is to fund companies so they can keep employees on payroll while they aren't working. We're going to pony up somewhere - it's either now in the form of a stimulus, or later in massive unemployment, lost retirement, and a prolonged depression. They're trying to lay the groundwork for an immediate economic rebound. I really try not to be cynical, but an immediate economic rebound is not in the best interest of democrats who are dying to see this president fail six months before an election.

They have all gotten so rich being in office with their shady *** dealings it wouldn’t hurt any of them. True evil when one is called to serve and they work solely in their own interests.
So true. When Bennie Thompson went into office in 1993, he was flat broke. He's now worth $24 million. How do you get that rich on a $174,000 a year salary?

Rahm Emmanuel famously said, “Never let a good crisis go to waste.” Without a good crisis to demand big legislation a lot of these “throw ins” would never get passed if they had to be debated as stand alone bills. Which is the whole point of adding them to monstrous bills where they tend to get lost.

I believe Party A is the Party of no ideas. Party B is the party of bad ideas.
And this is how Congress works:
Party A goes: “Hey...I have a really bad idea”
Party B stands up and says: “i will do my best to make it shittier”.

I personally don't care what big business do with the money as long as they have open doors when this is over. You can give 3000.00 today but in four weeks when my job is gone 3000.00 isn't ****. Just pass the damn thing, put money in consumer pockets, increase unemployment and loan money to big business to keep the doors open. **** solar power and all the other ********. Cut out the politics and just do your damn job in Washington.

And last week the GOP tried to sneak in a bunch of anti-abortion **** too.

There should be nothing at all regarding abortions (for or against), airline engine efficiencies, or anything else that's not directly related to the virus in this bill.

Nothing. The dems claim that the GOP bill would "enable trump to give money to his own companies and not have to disclose it for 6 months"

It’s a thought that I’ve seen all over social media today. I was speaking more to that than anyone specifically on this board.

Gotcha. I dont venture onto facebook or Twitter, but can imagine it's a shitshow on both right now.
This place during the pandemic is as crazy as I'm willing to get in terms of online discussion/social media.

Look at the differences between Southwest or Delta and American Airlines and tell me if the latter isnt being mismanaged. I work for a private company that manages our planes and finances just fine and we are essentially grounded because no one is flying right now that isnt on their way home to stay there. Are we going to be given big relief? I highly doubt it. If workers and small businesses are not going to be made whole I dont want anything going to companies that had gotten themselves in a **** ton of trouble before this even started.

The busineses that had managed themselves well and are being shut down need to be given help just as much as workers and small businesses who had managed their own finances well and are being told to stay home.

If the US government doesn't want to help out the businesses that help this country run, I'm sure there are some sovereign wealth funds itching to go for it. Are you ready for a third of Delta/American/United Airlines to be owned by some emiratis?

Because one company is run better than the other one doesn't mean that one is better positioned to weather this than others. Both companies are on the verge of bankruptcy because of policies this country has necessarily implemented to combat the virus.

Your comments make it sound like this legislation is targeted to big corporations. I say aGAIN, turn off CNN. The bulk of this legislation is targeted to small and medium size businesses and cash payments to individuals.

I agree that there may have been things in it some people didn't like. There were some things in it that I didn't like.

That being said, Democrat, Jim Clyburn kinda spilled the beans on what that gameplan is

NO WAY!!! Dems want to spend more money up on special interests and Repubs want to give more money to big business.

Meet the old boss, same as the old boss.

They might be **** out of luck when they start dying off like the rest of us.

How would you split the airline money then? Would you give the same amount to a company that has more debt now than they did when they filed for bankruptcy nine years ago as you would to the others? Would you be willing to give that same amount of money to another 121 operator who runs their business better and could fill the void left by a failing company?

They are all parasites. The Republicans are no better! They are not even including SSI and folks on Disability in this stimulus package.I guess if you're on a low fixed income you're **** out of luck. Most of the people on both sides would rather them die off anyway.

I don't know. I read here today that any of us not actively working didn't need any help and that any stimulus should go to those who work.

We join the shelter in place town tomorrow in Austin greater area and Travis Co. My boys that I home will probably be sent home tomorrow but Dad can help out on his SSI.

but I don't care. I hardly ever get political, but it appears (I use the word appear, because one never knows.) that the Democrats are being jerks. I hope people see the truth during this time of crisis and vote every single low life politician out of office, Republican or Democrat.

I stated earlier that Pelosi was as bat **** crazy as Trump, then she went and held the bill hostage to get Obama Care out of trouble and removed all doubt that she is just about the biggest pieces of **** in Washington.

If you are on SSI or Disability then your checks are still coming as usual. Why should they get additional funds vs people who actually lost their job and income? I am not getting any money due to income limits but if i did get it I would donate it to charity as both my wife and I have jobs not impacted financially by Covid-19.

We need relief not people looking for special interest issues. Do that at another time not NOW!!

Where did you get that stat?

Where did you get that stat? A quick google search shows his net worth at less than $1 million.

I get disagreeing with Thompson, but you can’t just make stuff up. It doesn’t help your case.

If a bill is meant to help those who have lost their job/business/cant work due to the government shutting down their industry, then money should go to those people/businesses.
Someone who voluntarily removed themselves from the workplace prior to this outbreak has not had their job lost work suspended. They wouldnt be part of the group that is assisted with an assistance bill.

Similarly, I shouldn't be part of this bill since I am still able to work.

...but if the point of the bill isnt just to assist those whose work has been affected, then gove money to everyone and let em spend it on whatever to help businesses out n whatnot.

It pains me to say this, but AOC has a good idea. If you use 2018 tax returns and you are a service industry that made 150k in 2018 and were excluded, but lost all of your income in 2020. How is that fair to you? I like the idea of giving the stimulus out now to all true tax payers in 2019. In 2021 if you show a significant increase of income tax that stimulus back. It should have to be significant and above a reasonable poverty line. As far as major corporate bailouts, that’s ********. Corporations have lobbied against minimum wage increases, healthcare, and paid time off. It’s no different than welfare as far as I’m concerned. Let them fail, the free market will hire a better workforce.

2018 taxes seem a little unfair. I know I earned next to nothing that year. This year was better, but the problem is that 2019 taxes are not due until July 15th. Many have lost their jobs. Shouldn't they get more (speaking as someone who has a job)?
