So the BoT approves the expenditure of $70mm without knowing whether the final product is financially justified. Business as usual at Dear Old State.

On a more mundane matter, will any of the approved winterizing work survive the renovation?

Kraft said the lingering question of whether and how to permanently honor former head football coach Joe Paterno at the stadium is one that will involve a broader university discussion as the overall project moves forward.

“That’s going to be a larger conversation that President Bendapudi, (Trustees Chairman) Matt Schuyler and everybody is involved in,” Kraft said.

In the realm of scrimping, you do know that the expenditure is primarily for the renovation of the west side (and odds and ends elsewhere in the stadium)?

Which is kind of interesting in view of comments made yesterday that Lasch would have been cheaper, both from construction and financing standpoints, if it had been done all at once. Vastly different orders of magnitude, of course, but the approach does indicate a certain lack of resolve.

The guy next door went to Ohio State. He will not shut up about how hard and fast they pass the hat and raise funds for all intercollegiate athletics projects. They get it, and in a lot of cases don't break ground until they do. I told him we have to go, hat in hand, to the trustees for a lousy $5.2 million to renovate locker rooms.
Unless Franklin can deliver a national championship - or even a runner-up - in the very near future, the alumni wallets are going to be zipped shut.

Board approves University’s interim operating budget for 2023-24

Trustees also approve extension to current capital plan’s borrowing authority

See the link below. From the article:

“UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — An interim operating budget of nearly $8.5 billion for the 2023-24 fiscal year to support University operations was approved today (May 5) by the Penn State Board of Trustees. The interim budget starts July 1.

A final budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year will be submitted for the board’s consideration at its next meeting, set for July 20-21 at Penn State Behrend.

The interim budget does not include any changes to tuition; employee salaries, wages or benefits; or other necessary expense increases, but it does include changes to 2023-24 room and board charges, as approved by the board in February. The interim budget also does not include funds from state appropriations, which have yet to be finalized as part of the commonwealth’s budget process.“

And,

”The board approved an extension of the remaining borrowing authority of the current capital plan, which spans fiscal years 2018-19 through 2022-23.”


Apparently, PSU doesn’t laugh at borrowing.
