RU's OL is brutally bad. Guys like Muller were getting ragdolled right off the bat. The backs can't block either. None of this is a surprise considering Flood's hideous OL "recruiting".

But not until we change the QB, and the personality of our offense.
Please don't let CL put 50 up against Howard, let another QB do it and go from there.
This is a bad team in all phases. No speed, not very strong, and no depth. Going to be a very ugly year. 4-8 is a STRETCH.

The coaching staff is best prepared to make a decision on the starting QB, based on daily familiarity with the talent. Got to trust their decision. As a fan, if you want to challenge that, you're showing a lack of confidence in the staff. Let's give them our support.

Listen, we weren't going to win this game, and for some reason, I'll keep the faith that we can get to 6-6. But this team needs to get it together enough to win every single winnable and swing game. Today did nothing to instill confidence that we can do that.

We don't have many (any) receivers that can catch great or out run anyone. I thought we needed a reload job but we need a rebuild job. To me it looks like a 2 win season.

Agreed, Muller was absolutely mauled today. I said he was the weak link on the line, and was told about his herculean strength, and cool beard. But he needs to play center. Cause Muller simply cannot play Guard. He's gonna get someone hurt.

Zappa

Correct

The defense played pretty well after the first quarter

More important ...we stuffed the run after being awful against the run for three years

We have a major team speed issue that has us playing starters on coverage teams and that's a problem

But the biggest problem is that we have a Qb that just can't rub this offense

The option game is non existsant because the Qb is not a threat to run

The Washington de sold out on the tailback Option every time

Until we can make this 11 on 11 football and have a Qb be s rest to run the ball at least 10 per game this offense is a mess

He might be strong but I've seen guys on sheetrock stilts who can move better lol

If we change Laviano... I disagree. If we change the OL, receivers, and Laviano, then I agree with you.

Laviano may be somewhat of a place holder while the rest of the offense grows - he is what he is - he is sort of a stunt double for a good QB - about the right height & weight ... looks similar - but everybody can tell he just is not going to become a movie star ... he is enough of a known quantity that he can be useful to work through all of the details until the rough edges are worked out.... and since this isn't his first rodeo - he has logged enough hours in this role so that he has a reasonable idea as to how to get the stuffing knocked out of him - without getting maimed for life ...

and if Smolar is going to be on the field, then he needs to learn how to tackle.

they kept putting the shake & bake on our Punter.

Special Teams as predicted by me earlier, are an absolute nightmare.

This was the biggest problem on the day. I'm not a Laviano fan but it's hard to put it all on him when they had such constant penetration rushing nothing but their 4 lineman the whole game.
Five linemen should be able to block more than 2 guys among them.

Lotta gaps besides QB....not happening this year
What's "not happening"? The Big Ten Championship? Rose Bowl?

The season is definitely happening. Switch QBs.. prove Ash is willing to do that like he said. Maybe if Flood had done that Nova and Laviano might have improved sooner or we could have found someone else.

This is not a surprises a few posters here who know what they're talking about have been trying to convince people to temper expectations. If you're really angry after today it's only your fault. On to next week.

Everyone knows we're lacking talent. Multiple returns simply can't happen though. I'm not going anywhere -- I'm on board with Ash -- but this was really bad.

Running read option with Alken could cover up some OL woes.
At least it forces the defensive to play contain and make a read.
This offense ain't gonna work, why does it matter if Allen can't throw if the OL doesn't allow CL to throw.
Allen might be better to start , but might not be the type of QB that can bring RU back from being behind.
Laviano doesn't seem like he's the answer, but I wonder if RU has any on their roster that is.
I think Chris won the job because he has the least flaws of the QB choices Ash has to work with.

I guess I just don't know as much the coaches, the
guy they chose to run the team looks bad, if it was
me I would choose the guy with the great arm, adjust
the offense somewhat and continue looking for the right
QB for their system. But again if it was me, it wouldn't be
the spread.

CZ is spot on. While we all recognize that CL is not the answer, it's hard to point the finger solely in his direction. The team had no chemistry, they were ill prepared on both sides of the ball and the play calling was atrocious.

This offense requires as Qb to be

1.) credible threat to run the ball 10 per game

2.) be able to throw the ball between the hashes to force the safeties to respect the middle of the field

Right now ...there isn't anyone who I have seen with my eyes that can do both for Rutgers to run this offense

If Allen isn't the answer...and Odin isn't ready yet .....then we need a JUCO pro something for 2017/ as the two guys we have that can do these things will be a true Frosh and a redshirt Frosh/soph

We just wanted to look respectable today.

That is a low, low bar.

For a lot of reasons, we need the QB position to do that.

The team certainly could suck for the rest of the season, but I believe they can, and probably will, improve significantly. There were plenty of instances today when the team did things well. They didn't do those things consistently and you can't win that way. If coach does his job, we should see a better team and 4-6 wins.

This is the essence of the problem. This program hasn't had a decent OL since about the second half of 2008. It's a combination of bad recruiting and bad coaching. The offensive system you run doesn't matter if you don't block people. If this doesn't change, the results will always be the same.

Teams that run the read option effectively still block people. DTs screaming unblocked into the backfield will render the zone read completely ineffective. No offensive system that has to compensate for the inability to block people will ever work.

When you recruit an Italian QB from Long Island, he's going to start, regardless of the coaching staff. Think you're going to see someone else....forgetaboutit.
