This QB Portal is Getting Crazy....

What this really show is just how un-****ing-happy players were for the last 100 years.
I get it if it’s a terrible fit but a “commitment” isn’t what it used to be. Players are too quick to jump ship in my opinion. Every situation is unique, but a reboot isn’t always the best decision either. Now let’s go get a QB.

Some of it is just that now they know they have easy options. It used to be that you just sucked it up and made it work. Now everybody knows what is going on at other programs and communicates with friends at other schools. Back in my day it cost real money to talk to somebody "long distance" on the phone.

I don't blame the kids. If they're not going to play where they're at or hate the guts of the coach for whatever reason, go someplace else.

Here is how I have always looked at it.

Say you got a full ride for being super smart and you are working on a cure for cancer...then you want to transfer. And for some crazy reason you can't get a full ride for a year AND you can't work on a cure for cancer. Makes no sense. None at all.

Hahaha, I had a dude that used to borrow my "calling card" to call back home to Cali...remember those things?!?

Wonder if they will eventually add the sir year back in. Also, are we seeing a higher number of transfers due to the Covid year

Uhhhh...that's way after my time in college. I'm from the era when my now wife would call home to let her parents know she had made it back to Lincoln. She called collect and when the operator asked her parents if they would accept the charges they would say no.

Seems like a long distance call was like a 30 cents a minute or some ridiculous amount.

I do think COVID is part of it but I also think this thing will slow down because kids are going to start hearing about older guys who either didn't find a new home or had to drop to a significantly lower level in a place they would rather not have been.

I’m not someone who was against paying players. It was a joke that players couldn’t make money off their own NIL before this.

However… CFB is laughably broken right now. They need some type of regulation. This isn’t just “Gen Z doesn’t understand commitment”. Players and coaches alike are leveraging any type of success to better their brand and jumping at the next best thing.

Honestly the best thing for the sport at this point would just be for the P5 to break off from the NCAA. “College Football” is done. We can stop pretending this has anything to do with school and maybe get some regulation while fairly compensating players.

Meh. I think this will stabilize within the next couple of years. When I watch college football on Saturdays there is no way I think this thing is "broke". It's changed. That's all. We just bascially have free agency in college football now. Long term that might not be as bad as you think.

It definitely makes a single year's recruiting class seem less important, no? This portal stuff basically means players are now recruited from high school and throughout college.

only 1/4th of the portal players found a home, so far.....so I'm not sure where that leaves the 3/4th
I suppose only go portal if you have a good shot at landing somewhere.
if your a 2 star 4th on the depth chart..probably not a good idea to say rico's time is now!...lol

how many decisions did you make at 17 that you'd like to have define you for the rest of your life?

players should have every single iota of autonomy coaches have been afforded for decades.

If the schools are eliminated and it becomes like the NBA G-League, I'll stop watching. And so will most people.

This is how it's been in high school football for many years now. It is kind of crazy out here in California. I have young kids going to my gym that attend St. John Bosco almost an hour away. They are recruited at a very young age. Look back at Taylor Martinez. He was a QB at 2 or 3 different high schools before he came here.

Calzada was very average. I was a bit surprised that A&M didn't end up with Ewers, but Jimbo must like his other options much better.

I agree with a lot of what has been said. I do think we have to wait a few years to see how it shakes out but for me, for right now, I think the portal is a very bad thing for young kids and for coaches.

It makes recruiting much much easier for coaches and allows them to miss on players. If you guys don't think they are "asking" players to put themselves in the portal (especially those they don't feel can play or are problems in their mind) than you are crazy. No loyalty whatsoever, from coaches or kids. No more (if their ever was) I want you to get a good education. It is exclusively "What have you done for me lately". This is the mindset from a coach to a kid after the coach has "promised" a full scholarship. If he isn't what the coach expected, instead of developing, he can in reality just "ask" or "convince" him to put himself in the portal.

I don't like it, I hope something as far as regulation happens sooner than later.

You get one transfer and then you stay where you are. If I'm a coach and see a player a decent player with 3 years left in the portal and a HS recruit, I'm choosing the portal player.

Especially now that you get scholly's when a player hits the portal. I think it is 10 per year for portal players.

It’s bad for kids for sure. Only around 30 percent of the players are picked up by ANYONE. Thats 70 percent of the kids out of school. The portal gives an illusion of a 2nd option, so the kids don’t push through that wall.

As the rules stand now, I would grab 15 portal players and 10 HS kids. Those 15 are basically locked into you, because that 2nd transfer comes with sitting out. Two/three solid portal classes and you can have a veteran team. I would get FCS all Americans first(Toure), then kids who were thinking NU out of HS who want to come now(Tommi hill), lastly big college failures(tyreke Johnson). Qb can be every year thing, until I recruit the right kid out of HS.

15...i'd be tentative going that headlond into it, but we're not in a position to be too picky. We need help everywhere.
Is that greenhagen/fordham in the portal? I'd give that kid a shot.

Well when coaching contracts mean nothing..... It's really not worth the digital space it's typed on. There is no such thing as loyalty to anything but the financial portfolio. Oklahoma fans are crying how Riley did backdoor dealing before leaving in the middle of the night. Funny thing is the "Irate 8" felt the same way in the Summer when Oklahoma and Texas left for the SEC.

So we all talk about which QB comes to NU but what happens if none of them actually do and we go into next year with Smothers, Haarberg, Torres? Do we feel we will be ok?

You had to make calls when the rates went down.

define ok?

we just brought in a pro style OC & WR combination, and if we don't pickup a legit pro style QB, then it does seem like we have a square peg/round hole in Smothers, and the other two guys need lots of development work.

In time, we might be ok with that, but does Frost have the time to develop a QB for a couple years?

People keep discounting Masker but he probably has as much chance of being successful in a more pro-style offense of any of our QBs.

Def the dark horse for the job! I was impressed the little I saw from him in limited time and spring games. Best pure passer on our roster

Now if I could just get my fingers to type in decent English instead of gibberish. I really need to proofread before I hit "post reply".

we do need to get another scholarship worthy QB whether it's finding an overlooked high schooler who fits what Whipple wants or a transfer. There will be more kids transfer before the spring semester is over.

We need a QB that's a good passer and can win right away. Those Qbs are all longshots to be able to do that next year.

When I had an academic scholarship to NU, it came with strings attached. I had to keep a certain GPA or I lost the scholarship and I couldn't leave NU and expect a different school to give me the same scholarship. IF a kid willingly leaves a school that's on him if he doesn't find a new school to offer him a free ride. Lots of 18 year olds get mad and quit jobs only to figure out later that they should have stuck it out where they had been. Growing up is tough for some guys.
