What people choose to do, but the only adults I know that watch wrestling are on the MSU beat.

Is this something that is common on all college beats? Or do we have some kind of sleeper cell in Starkville with wrestling fans covering our teams?

It’s essentially the kardashians for men. I think I gave it up in the 6th grade once I was certain that it was all fake.

When I was in school in the late 60's - early 70's there was a weekly wrestling show I believe on a Columbus station. We watched it every week. We all knew it was totally fake but it was just an entertaining mixture of comedy and over-the-top drama that we got a big kick out of. We never felt we owed anybody an explanation for being entertained by phony wrestling. Now many decades have passed since I watched wrestling but I still don't feel that anybody who watches it owes anybody else an explanation for anything if they enjoy it.

Congrats on waiting until 6th grade to realize it’s fake.

It’s scripted sport with “acting”. Take or leave it. I haven’t watched it regularly in years but it’s a form of entertainment like any other show.

If that's your thing, do it up. No judgement here.

I just don't think it should be covered by sports outlets.

As a child, 11:00 am on Saturday mornings were usually reserved for Mid-South Rasslin.

As I aged, I definitely lost interest in that sport. Could see the characters as trained actors putting on a show. Thought it was very silly and rehearsed.

Fast forward to this past September, my wife was looking for Halloween costumes for my child. She saw an adult “Macho Man” costume. She mentioned that with my beard, I could pass as Macho Man. So, with some persuasion from my son, I told her to order it. I never do anything for Halloween other than putting on a MState shirt at the church trunk-er-treat.

When that costume (the leopard print and red pleather Slim Jim one) came in, I started researching Randy the Macho Man Savage on YouTube.

I was fascinated by how the character in the ring or on interviews also influenced the man in real life. He was actually married to Elizabeth and relationship actually was on the brink when the feud with Hulk Hogan started. Also as some can probably confirm, Cocaine is obviously a hell of a drug.

So long live the Savage and “Snap into a Slim Jim, YEEEEHAAAA!!!!”

Although I will say that Undertaker throwing Mankind off the top of the Hell in a Cell was not fake in any way.

My 60+ yr old grandmother watched that stuff religiously in the late 60's and you had better not even hint that it wasn't real around her or she would come off the top rope of the ring on your ***. Me, I have to question adults that spend money on it knowing it is 100% ******** just like Bravo Housewives junk

I feel like this is the MSU beat’s version of rollerblading where they don’t realize that everyone else never really thought it was cool **

But for real, it is odd to me that grown men watch wrestling but different strokes. I’m sure a lot of people think it’s strange we Religiously watch 19 year olds play football.

My ex gf is a big wrasslin fan. Her and her brother grew up watching it. She got me watching that dark side of the ring junk and I will say I thought those back stories were pretty entertaining. Some of those guys were colorful outside the ring too

You only know certain people probably with the same interests. I know several. If this was the late 90s during the Monday night wars you would know a ton. I don’t watch anymore because it’s way too PG and PC now. Too family friendly for me. I grew up during the Attitude era when Rock and Stone Cold ran the show. That was wrestling’s peak imo.

That was my introduction as well. Grandma was religious with wrestling and soaps. Tell her either was fake and she got upset.

I always loved watching the passion play when the characters were fun to watch and the Monday night Raw WCW wars were great fun but I haven't been able to sit through five minutes of the current stuff. Like most movies and tv shows there is no originality or great characters any longer and the writing is really bad. I think it is a product of the woke, PC, SJW world we have. They are afraid of being controversial and that is what they used to do well.

Folks say that wrasslins' fake. Well, ballet is fake too. Ever watch The Nutcracker? Same ending every time.

All forms of entertainment are stupid if you think about them too much. It’s easy to get sucked into the idiocy of looking down on other people’s preferred form of entertainment until you think a little bit about what you spend your time on, like getting upset that a bunch of 18-22 year olds that you don’t know are playing like ****.

I get why people like it. I just cant commit to watching several hours a week. To really get into it, you have to know the characters and that's an investment of time.

But how is it any different than any show like Game of Thrones, the Boys, etc? Its live high level performance art performed live by very talented people.

The constant events and production associated with WWE is also crazy to think about. It's a publicly traded company also has a huge business side to it.

before I retired from flying, we were descending into SFO and asked the first officer where he wanted to eat dinner (that's really what pilots talk about), and he said he'd do room service cause it was Wednesday and he was going to watch WWE Smackdown. I had no comeback.

I definitely don’t understand Brian’s, Joel’s and Brandon’s obsession with it. I never even gotten into it as a child. My 5 year old asked to watch it once and even shrugged it off. But those three guys are still my daily listens. Just weird with the wrestling ****. To each their own

Great Point. How many people think Braveheart, Rudy, Tombstone, Lincoln, Gladiator, We Are Marshall, Miracle, Remember the Titans, Midway etc. are historically accurate or at least find themselves quoting something from it as if it happened that way?

I don’t watch it very often, but it can be fun to watch, especially with my son (6). I’d watch more if I could trust him not to try out moves on his little brother or friends at school.

Ben Garrett used to watch it and discuss it some, but I think I’ve heard him say he quit watching it a while back, and I know I haven’t heard him mention it in a while.

Exactly.

Professional wrestling is scripted entertainment . . . just like movies and television shows.

I've heard someone describe it as "the male soap opera" . . . and I agree.

Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, the WWF/WWE was the ****.

I watched it back then . . . and f*cking loved it.

Since then, I've gotten married and raised a kid . . . so I haven't watched it in years.

To all you jabronis poking fun at people for watching rasslin: shut your mouth and go get your TV remote . . . shine it up real good . . . turn that SOB sideways . . . and stick it straight up your candy *** . . . because . . . IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU THINK!

This is a pretty good point, especially when you think about how much success the Rock had as an actor after wrestling. It is scripted TV, just like so many reality shows, and in a sense it was a precursor to those shows. Movies require the watcher to suspend disbelief quite often, and wrestling requires you do it at all times. Some of the great movies dont require it as much and are praised for their realism, but some of those movies suck and arent as good as the more fantastical plots that are out there.
