This is mindless overreaction. Nebraska has like a .01 death rate all ages, and that doesn't include all the people who have had/have covid and never got tested. I realize other states are higher but not much higher. I cant believe how much people have bought this madness and are allowing it to essentially end our lives and crush our economy in ways we might find shocking.

It also makes no sense. Iowa not playing Iowa state, as one example. Wtf?

The SEC meets Monday and there’s some rumors they are talking with Big 12 to fill some non conference games. I hope this is true and I hope the SEC/Big 12 drag their nuts across the B1Gs face yet again.

If this happens, only the conferences that play out of conference schedule should be considered for any playoff/NC. I dont care if its the SEC only and they only play sun belt/1AA schools OOC.

They made a mistake but they better not make it worse by cancelling the season, at least not with how things stand now regarding death rates.

TLDR/end rant.

Great post, but I’m figuring on no season, last night the big 10 network said the big two letter word, IF they have a season they will just play in conference.

the college football response has mirrored the response everywhere else .. pass the buck down the line

the NCAA decided to hand things over to the conferences
The conferences - power 5- couldn't coordinate a response deciding each individual conference could come up with their own plan

even the conferences don't have a uniform policy with regards to testing, reporting, procedures etc ... each school is left to their own plans

who knows what the right thing to do is. But i do know most of our lives have NOT ended except the ones who got the virus. i also know our economy may or may not be crushed depending on your definition of crushed. most the rich people are still rich. most the poor people are still poor. the job market took a huge hit in jobs that dont pay very well. i'm not sure our economy has been crushed. the people hurting were already hurting

Ok let me play devil's advocate here. When BIG announced their intentions I was skeptical. However it might be smart. This way the conference can control AND mandate how testing is done to try to keep everyone healthy so we can have a season. Worst case scenario is some FCS non conference team loaded up with the virus because they're not following protocol infects a BIG team and causes a real mess.

Maybe it's the best way to try to ensure we get 10 games in.

Food for thought

to be fair, the ncaa didn't 'hand' anything to the conferences. they have exactly zero jurisdiction over anything the conferences do, pandemic or not.

the only thing the ncaa controls is the playoff, just like the ncaa tourney (up to conferences to decide to cancel their individual tourneys until then).

I think you'll see conferences put out guidelines when camp starts.

Kinda sorta. The B1G bothered the SEC with this early decision because now they feel public pressure to follow.

If the NCAA recommend no season even though they have no power for that it would effectively put as much or more public pressure on the conferences. Doubly so if they cancelled the post season as well.

Then the SEC would have to go out there and say they are just playing to see if Bama or LSU was the best team in CFB this year for a smaller trophy.

the ncaa is the commissioner and the P5 schools are the owners to make a pro sports parallel

if the commish steps out of line, his (or, the ncaa's in this case) *** is out on the curb

can't bite the hand that feeds

they have jurisdiction over how many scholarships the schools can give out, when the schools can recruit, how many official visitors they are allowed, when they can practice, how long they practice, how many practices they have

the NCAA division 1 bylaws are over 450 pages long and dictate what the schools can and cannot do and when they can and can't do them

while it is each member schools responsibility to protect the health and safety of its student athletes - the NCAA can rule whether or not the school complied with this bylaw

I think the damage to the economy is enormous and it's going to get worse, which is why I would like to get more parts of it up and running. But to do that, we have to actually pay attention to what other countries are doing successfully and learn from it - instead of basing our perception of world events on what Cousin Cletus heard down at the local Daylight Donuts.

Short of a vaccine materializing in November or December, what is better about playing in the spring vs the fall?

The best thing would be to turn 50,000 cases a day down to something closer to 1,000 or fewer. But that requires massive change in behavior and rolling back some of the opening we’ve seen. Second would be a vaccine.

these all apply due to their ownership over the trophy at season’s end.

any team could operate with impunity out in the open if their opponents agreed and they were okay being ruled ineligible by the toothless ncaa at season’s end.

those 450 pages aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on.

they are so toothless that we have yet to see any university dip their toe in those waters and when the NCAA penalizes a school - the school generally complies

in lieu of the bowl game why didn't Nebraska just decide -- "you know what - those NCAA guidelines are toothless - we are going to hold practices this December" -- what the hell is Frost doing by not holding these practices - the program is falling further and further behind those teams that are actually able to manage 6 wins and a bowl.

and I would hope the NCAA, in this day and age, is environmentally conscious enough to distribute their guidelines electronically rather than by print on paper

I believe the schools and the commissioners will take a hard line as Rambo has indicated for months now....when the schools and commissioners stop backpedaling at every junction.

They do not appear to have the stones to face anyone at present. JMO.

I do agree with the idea that if the Power schools wanted to consolidate and throw the NCAA overboard to make their own 64 school league. Now's as good a break as any.

You know that pretty much every decision maker involved in having a football season has said its about case count and not death rates?

Yet people come on here and still post social media data about death rates in Lincoln, Nebraska and act amazed the decisions aren't going their way. We may as well argue about what Legion baseball means for college football some more.

As an ISU alum, losing the Iowa game is a sad moment. Its a good rivalry. But again, people misunderstand the primary reason to cancel non-con games. In some cases, schools will be somewhat safer if they don't import a directional school from Florida to play. In the case of Iowa-ISU it makes no sense with respect to infection.

The prime reason to go conference only is to be in total control of the season. Testing standards, delays, cancellations, movement of dates, whatever. It is the last best hope to have some games this year, assuming the governors don't shut it down or the commissioners just pack it in instead of trying to take schools into a potential circus.

And MOST of the lives of people who have gotten the virus have not ended. In fact using the most recent estimate of total number of people who have had the virus (not just the confirmed cases) the case fatality rate is roughly .043%. Considering that the CFR is nearly 25% for the elderly and that most of the fatalities have been in the elderly, that's ridiculously low. 4.5/1000. IF you would take the elderly out and leave in everybody else even with comorbidities, the CFR would be more like .02%. 2/1000 including people with all kinds of serious disease processes. Another tidbit of news is that my friend who survived COVID to be discharged a couple of weeks ago, died from his end stage kidney disease and bladder cancer. Guess what his cause of death was listed as? Yep. COVID.

Why does case count matter? If death rates are low and far lower than thought, why does case count matter?

I just saw a couple posts from reporters saying SEC was upset about how this will bring more heat on them. They seemed to want the B1G to wait a bit longer before jumping.

Personally I haven't seen a big outcry for them yet, I think they are just pre-emptively whining.

So with the Pac 12 and big 10 going conference season only eventually the sec will have conference only out of lack of opponents. The fcs schools can't afford to test their athletes so that elimantes them too. Eligibility will be a mess when this all shakes out

That's how bad it's gotten. That the resounding answer will be yes let's go with that option. The virus won't be going away with a simple change in "leadership." The ship has sailed and now it's just try to be as safe and reasonable as possible.
