Penn State QB Rocco Becht latest college football star to show classes don’t matter

Just to be clear, I'm not posting this to denigrate RB in any way. It's simply another piece of evidence that college football is a thing of the past. This is the sort of thing Penn State Football fans would attribute to "football factories" that "didn't play school," and now it's hit home. I hate what has happened to college football.

The kid has a degree...he'll take the amount of classes required but our fan base has always tried to pretend we did things differently. We didn't. Those that cared about school got a real degree. Those that didn't managed to stay eligible. We didn't have 1000s of John Urschels contrary to what some want to believe. We had a ton of guys that were here to get a degree in football and only that.

Also, remote classes weren't a thing when I was at Penn State in the late 90s...times change. There's no reason at all he (or anyone) needs to be in a classroom. That goes for many jobs as well. Technology has made that unnecessary.

That's a great point. The Bills love Allen because he's a Bill and they can count on him to be around for the term of his contract (6 yrs). College teams can't count on any players returning.
As a Steelers fan, I love Allen because he's a beast. I do get what you're saying. Barring a trade demand he's a Bill and those in Buffalo can rely on that but they also still love guys that left (like Poz) as players leaving doesn't negate what they accomplished. Jagr will also be my favorite Penguin despite him leaving for the Caps then 90 other teams.

This whole thing is tough though because for decades the programs had too much control. They could block guys from transferring to certain schools (no clue how that was ever legal) and were making tons of money off of them. The system isn't great but, to me, the players, not the programs, should have also had the ability to control where they played. Coaches leave, players gets benched for younger guys that step up...loyalty doesn't exist (as I've pointed out with Franklin)

I hope things change but until pay for play is implemented and these kids sign multi year deals it won't. Can't wait to see the reaction when we start seeing headlines like "Penn State sells (insert player's name)'s contract to Miami" because it's coming

He'll probably be taking some on-line courses, could be toward another undergrad degree or toward a master's degree. He already has his undergraduate degree from ISU so he's not looking to avoid classes, simply hasn't finalized his classes.

In my time there were quite a few players who would take a very light course load, the minimal to keep up eligibility, during their final fall term at PSU. I’m trying to remember one player in particular, can’t quite get his name, no disrespect intended.

It's not a new thing to college football or PSU, but feaux outrage is all the norm. Is he eligible to play? Yes...good. Does he already have his degree...yep...good on him. Will others not care or not get their degree....probably, but that too happened in the past.
