I'm disappointed with this matchup. Would have liked to go up against a big time program like Georgia or Florida instead of the irrelevant has beens in Knoxville.

Tennessee is the Nebraska of the SEC.
Some just are not cut out for trolling. Pathetic attempt bro, I expected more from you guys.

what has your team achieved other than upsetting a half baked georgia team? Dude you guys lost what...4 or 5 games?
Get real!
They talk big but they choke. They can't win the games when it counts. They played 6 bowl teams and only beat 2. They can talk about teams they almost beat but that just makes them Nebraska.

he did pretty good against the #1 defense at wisconsin. he has played against 3 of the top 10 defenses.
Your signature win was against a very very unfocused georgia team. Otherwise you beat the normal and customaries vany kentucky etc..Tenn hasnt stepped up against the better sec teams.
You're a GREAT opponent that may sneak up on us but our defense will deliver a monster bruise on your team.

Sorry

Lol.. Holy ****. You have to be trolling. Wisconsin #1 defense? 3 top ten defenses? Who is that? Remember the teams you beat play the same ****** schedule that the rest of that terrible conference plays..

Doesn't matter if they're bowl teams if they get absolutely shat on in the bowl game. You are correct tho. Our guys didn't finish the deal, because had they done that, we'd be in the playoff and not concerning ourselves with such a ****** opponent such as yourselves.. I'll feel really good if we can keep it within 20 or so by halftime..

All BS aside, beating good teams is a concern for me as a Tennessee fan. We have been close but couldn't close the deal on anyone not named Georgia this season. I do think it is a huge positive that the locker room did not fold and fought for an 8-4 season... which is a 2 game improvement over last year.

Does it hurt your feelings that an 8-4 Tennessee gets more national attention than a 10-2 Northwestern team?

Not just that though... but that an 8-4 Tennessee will be favored??

That would get all up in my crawl if I were a NW fan.

We are always the underdog. We don't like it much being the favorites. Doesn't bother us a bit. It is fun afterwards when the opposing fans who were bragging go back home with their tails between their legs.

Just watched parts of the NU-Stanford game to start getting a feel for your team. Here are a few thoughts:

First, a side note: the telecast's opening scenery of Lake Michigan was beautiful. It is easy for us down south to forget the natural gift our country has in the Great Lakes. If it weren't so cold for 7-8 months of the year, you guys would have an ideal set-up!

Okay, football.

I see a lot of similarity in our defenses. Both teams use the 4-3 as our base, though you guys stick with that more than us...we tend to shift into nickle a little more frequently. Then again, that's pretty much just a function of the offenses we face. Anyway, both Wildcat and Volunteer fans are going to be very familiar with each other's Ds, there's familiarity there.

This could be wrong because I have only seen parts of one game, but seemed to me that you guys' three key defensive playmakers are:
--> Dean Lowry at DE (our counterpart player: Derek Barnett)
--> Anthony Walker at LB (our counterpart: Jalen Reeves-Maybin)
--> Nic VanHoose at CB (our counterpart: Cam Sutton)
does that sound right?

On offense, I was impressed with your young RS Fr QB, Thorson. Kid has a nice arm.

Would you say that you guys run a spread offense? That's how it seemed to me, though there are elements of a more old-fashioned power run formation to it, too. Your look seems unique to me (but maybe it's more common in the B10?).

Your OLine looks really solid, both in run block and pass pro.

Justin Jackson seems like a stud. And Vitale is intriguing, I'd never heard of the "superback" notation before learning about him. He's going to be a bit of an enigma for us early on in the practices prepping for the bowl. He's like a cross of our largest RB (Jalen Hurd), our best TE (Ethan Wolf), and the fullback that we don't have (we typically use a TE in the FB role when we--rarely--go with a lead blocker).

Would you say Christian Jones and Miles Shuler are your best receivers? Jones looks a bit like our Von Pearson to me, and Shuler reminds me of our Josh Malone.

Anyway, that was an impressive win for you guys. I'm going to pull up another game from later in the year some time tomorrow, see how the team evolved as the year went on.

Best!

Let's compare apples to apples. Tennessee has played 3 defenses currently in the top 10 (Alabama, Missouri, Georgia). We rushed for a combined 587 yards, an average of 195 yards rushing per game. All 3 of those defenses rank higher than Northwestern.

Northwestern has only played 2 top 10 defenses (Wisconsin and Michigan), with a total of 187 yards rushing, averaging 93.5 yards per game on the ground.

So it would be fair to say that Tennessee has rushed, on average, for 100 yards a game more against top 10 defenses than Northwestern has.

Best!

Not too far off, but Harris is probably our better corner. Igwebuike (safety) can also make his fair share of plays on defense. Gibson (the DE opposite Lowry) also came into his own late in the year and started consistently pressuring the QB. Our defense is really quite solid up and down the two-deep.

On offense, Thorson has all the tools but is maddeningly inconsistent. The fact that we don't really have any BCS-caliber WRs outside of Christian Jones (who doesn't seem to have fully recovered from an ACL injury last year) doesn't really help either. The OL has been inconsistent of late as well, though better in run blocking than pass blocking -- that's a big reason we've shifted to an extremely run-heavy, ball control offense toward the end of the year.

The Wisconsin and Illinois games to close out the season are probably the best examples of what our team has done and can do. The defense was absolutely stifling against Wisconsin, but the offense struggled enough to keep it an extremely close game (a couple of missed FGs didn't help either). Illinois showed what our offense can do when it's clicking (3 TDs while moving the ball pretty successfully) and what it looks like when we aren't (essentially stalling after the first quarter).

Around here, we're hoping that the extra bowl practices give Thorson additional time to gel with a hodge-podge group of wideouts to cobble together a passing game that is at least a threat. The extra time off should also be extremely valuable to an OL that was starting to get pretty beaten up toward the end of the year. Otherwise, it will likely be a steady dose of Justin Jackson in hopes of controlling the clock with our run game an defense.

We went 10-3 in 2012 and then saw two years of blown leads, Hail Mary losses, a few sketchy ref calls, and underperformance. So, at first when we didn't have much of a passing offense this year, things looked shaky. When we beat Stanford, some of us were still thinking 7-5 or. 8-4. We hoped the offense would develop but the problem is not simple. After a while, I think the fans realized what the coaches knew, we had to take shots early, get ahead, and rely on a defense that doesn't have much weaknesses. Michigan showed the league that the way to beat our defense is to keep them on the field. Iowa followed the same formula basically long drives and getting our offense off fast. Then Nebraska tried it. The offense then changed to trying to sustain drives as long as possible. 3-4 yard runs on first and second and situation plays on 3rd. The games got uglier but we won them. Even though they are close calls, there is confidence with a lead in the fourth.

you havent played any bigten defenses.

Sorry

Which is why Tennessee is only 24th overall in total rushing yards instead of much higher.

The last Big Ten defense we played (Iowa) gave up 283 yards rushing, and the starters hit the bench in the 3rd quarter.

Your formula for winning certainly works. We have played similar teams this season, meaning bad offenses and good defenses.... Mizzou, Vandy, and Florida come to mind. NU is obviously much better in the W-L column than Mizzou or Vandy, but your offensive and defensive statistical rankings are similar.

I could see a game a lot like the one we played at Mizzou. We won 19-8 but really dominated the game. We were up 19-0 and took our foot of the gas on offense. There was no way Mizzou could score 19 unless we helped them with a turnover.

I do think NU has more offensive potential than Mizzou. Your QB can run and your RB is healthy (Mizzou's guy was not 100%). I think your defenses are similar in the front 7, NU probably a little more athletic than Mizzou's secondary.

If you want to keep living in the past, the last SEC team we played could only put up 106 yards passing and threw 4 INTs.

Fairly certain that the fact that we haven't "played any bigten defenses" is just as irrelevant. Bama is ranked #1 in total rush defense and we still had 132 yards rushing.

They will however be fortunate to stay in this game against such a formidable foe that is the great Northwestern University. Hopefully our guys aren't as scared as they probably could be. I mean, no way our young guys could ever be ready for a team as scary as the wildcats.

Hopefully we have a good size contingency that follows our boys down to Florida, and hopefully we make the game at the least respectable and justify the good folks of the Outback bowl for giving us this prestigious honor of playing the #12 ranked team in the country. Shew I get cold chills just thinking about it.

See how we can keep going in circles like this? Or is now when we cue up the "Big Ten Sucks!" comments?

Do you think we give a **** what you did to Iowa, which is as close as the B1G gets to a "Cowbell U"?

Nobody here thinks that we are going to overwhelm a very athletic Tennessee team. What I think we are reacting to is the insistent arrogance of Tennessee fans that have shown up, mostly to rehash the old "SEC speed, poor B1G players" arguments.

Appreciate the insights!

If your gonna compare apples, get them from the same orchard. Tennessee has played one Top 10 rushing defense, Alabama. Northwestern has played 3 Top 10 rushing defense, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Nebraska. Missouri is #27 and Georgia is #48.

well.....tennessee hung 283 yards rushing on that iowa defense a few months ago before calling off the dogs in the fourth quarter.....not sure you are going to impress us talking about iowas rush defense......and that was when we only had one five star tailback.....now we have two.....
