Literally no one plays like this anymore. Our program is being held hostage by Cal and the bum Barnhart who enabled him
Against longer and more athletic players Oscar is probably more effective from the free throw line than he is in the post. However, there is no reason for Toppin to be shooting fadeaway 18 foot jumpers...EVER.
Our entire team takes them. Frequently.
Is laughable and sad. Our coach wants us to take a shot that is literally one of the worst in basketball, and he centers his game plan around it. 10 mil a year man, for that
I know people hate on it, but let's be real - Toppin and Oscar both shoot the mid-range jumper really, really well. We've won games BECAUSE of those 2 making mid-range jumpers. Some of the biggest shots of the year have been Cason, CJ and Reeves hitting mid-range shots. While I'm not some huge fan of mid-range jumpers, I just don't understand why so many people hate on them. But then again I'm in my 15th year of coaching basketball, so maybe I have a different perspective than a casual fan
What makes it even more maddening is that vandy was playing small ball and we were trying to shoot jumpers. I'm not even mad anymore at Cal. I just laugh at this point.

How in the hell does a player or coach make a HOF while they are still at the job? Bob Huggins has had maybe 5 NBA players in his 40 or so years of coaching. He shouldn't be in either. But he is twice the coach Cal is.

At first when looking at the above I thought, we did not attack the rim or post-up enough. But no. The above stats are misleading in that regard, because we took 35 FTs, more than twice as many as Vandy. So a lot of those close up misses did not count, were not FGA's, thus why only 10 taken up close.
When you shoot 15.8% from 3, NO # of 3pt attempts will result in a win. If every one of those mid-range 2's were taken from 3 (so 49 total 3's), and the 15.8% remained the same, we would have made 4.7 more (round UP to 5) 3's, which would have resulted in 3 less points for us.

It’s a poor shot the majority of the time. No other way to spin it. Taking 30 and making it the focal point of the offense in 2023 is absolutely coaching malpractice.

Actually if you change those 19 3's (yes even the 3 we made) to mid-range 2's, and assume we continued to make 30% of those, we make 6.33 (rounding DOWN to 6) of those for 3 MORE points than the 3's gave us (& the win).
When you make them like the Auburn and Florida game you can run the team out of the gym but when you miss them, you can lose to nearly anybody. Sad thing is, the color commentator was essentially questioning the game plan the entire 2nd half. I kept wondering why Cal wouldn’t say something to them about going inside to Oscar when Vandy went small but apparently that was the game plan.
So when people question the offense, even when Kentucky is scoring in the 80’s this is what we’re questioning. I said Saturday, our offense was a complete oxymoron because there’s no way you should have 3 shot clock violations in a half and still score 40 plus points.

Jmo but 3-19 from 3 is what cost us this game. Not on the Cal train but nobody is going to win many games shooting that poorly. We were fortunate to be in the game
3 point stats are irrelevant in this discussion. Yes, I know, we were horrendous on those as well. Find me a team at any level of basketball that is taking 30 midrange two’s in a game, you won’t. It’s just one of many of Calipari’s baffling takes on coaching.

Kansas had a very similar game Tuesday night. Shot 5/23 from 3 and pulled out the W. Kansas wins every close game they have down the stretch and while they get bailed out by the refs a lot and put on the line late that wasn’t the case Tuesday night. They just gutted out the W. We seem to lose about 50% of our close games at home. KU 5-0 at home during conference play in games decided by 5 points or less. UK 2-2.

We hit 15 more free throws than vandy and also out rebounded them.
There is more about basketball that Cal doesn't know, then what he knows. The one thing he knows, is to recruit the best (5 STARS), which he leaves it up to the pundits to judge. Cal cannot judge a players ability. I don't believe he recruits to fill a certain position, but just relies on getting as many 5 Star players as he can, hoping they work-out.

We have the best 3pt % in the SEC... normally, you'd want to shoot a bunch of those since you shoot it so well.

The HOF is a joke. If you can kiss the media's A$$, and have a lot of BS, which CalI is great at, you stand a good chance of getting in the HOF. I disagree with you on Huggins. I know he hasn't won a National Championship, but I look at what he does with what he has. He beat Cal when we had Wall, Bledsoe and Cousins, by changing his game-plan. I judge a coach by what he does with his recruits, not by his recruiting. UK, Kansas, UCLA, Duke and NC are schools who usually get the top recruits, so I do expect more from them. A good coach can take a really good point guard, and a good center and build a good team with other players who are not 5 Star players. We've seen that at Virginia, Villanova, Conn. and other schools in the past. A good coach doesn't try and put a round peg in a square hole. If BS was music, Cal would be a "Brass Band."
