His role should be to come back, work hard in practice against the likes of Dillingham, Wagner, and Edwards and get better. When his name is called in games it will be to play defense and win 50/50 plays like he generally does. IMO, the guy has a bright future ahead of him. It just, again, to me, will take a few seasons before he's ready for 20-25 minutes or more in a game.

I look for him to be between 7-9 in an 8 man rotation, assuming we add another shooter.
I think he’ll be higher up the rotation than than 8-9.

Lots to be determined yet about the roster, but I’m guessing Thiero backs up 3 & 4. If the betting line was 13 mins a game I would take the over. (Especially if Livingston departs.)

I said all year he wasn’t a PG and teams would quickly begin to pressure him in their attempt to turn him over. The pg minutes were out of necessity more than skill or fit.

However, he’ll do a good job at initiating offense from the wing. He’s strong around the rim and has some bounce to his game. I agree with others that he has to improve his outside game, but that’s supposed to happen between first and second year.

Thiero will be a good role player with a few big games. He can guard multiple positions, and that alone will get him some more mins. (My guess.)

May also depend on the growth spurt his docs predict. He would b one hell of a 6 foot nine inch point guard his jr year . Has a great understanding of the game and gives it 110%.
I really hope he returns . If he continues to progress and does grow he could eventually be one of those rare players that could play any of five positions.

Here’s how I see it. Dillingham, DJ, Edwards, Bradshaw, some new post player. That’s five.

Reeves is 6. Add a new shooter makes 7. Hard to see a decent shooter coming in unless they are at least top 2 off the bench.

Then you have Reed and Thiero. They could be offense/defense type subs. I would call them 8/9 in the rotation, understanding that injury or foul trouble could mean more minutes for either.

Yeah personally I'll have to see the whole growth spurt thing happen before I believe it. I know he already grew a lot in high school but the way people talk he's guaranteed to grow another 3 inches and I personally highly doubt that happens. It would be a great thing though.

I just hope that Cal doesn't pick him as the 'one' player who he refuses to play.

My guess is he is going to be behind Dillingham, Wagner, Edwards, Reeves, and Sheppard in the rotation at the 1-3. Might be able to fight his way into the rotation as the reserve 4 behind Bradshaw.

So like a lot of people already said, probably at the bottom of the rotation, if he is in the rotation.

I'm hoping he becomes a four-year Allen Edwards type for us. 6'5" to 6'6" ish and capable of defending three positions.

In time, he could be that same type of utility guy that Edwards was for us during our '97 and '98 Final Four runs.

I've long contended that if Pitino had redshirted Edwards in '96, we make the Final Four and possible win it all in '99.

I agree with you that high quality transfers don’t make a move unless they expect to be in top 7 rotation.

I’m guessing Wagner, Reeves, Edwards, Bradshaw, “new big” begin the season. Dillingham, “transfer shooter” Reed and Thiero get the other mins. However, depending on transfers, and without Ugo and Livingston, I see scenario where Edwards plays small ball 4. Call wants his wings to defend and rebound and I’m not convinced Reed can fill that role next year. That leaves Thiero backing up the 3 & 4 spots and increasing his mins.

Some people want to see him at pg regardless of size. He’s never looked comfortable in that role, nor do I expect that to change. The NBA often uses the point forward to initiate offense and I think Edwards and Thiero both would thrive in that role. They can score off the dribble or draw the double team.

I’m operating from principle that 1 freshman will underwhelm, 1 will be good, and I expect 1 or 2 to be excellent. Thiero will slowly get more mins from under performers.

Where are you guys getting power forward from this guy. He was a pg in highschool and he's about 6'6 now.

I would like to see Edwards at small ball 4, but I don’t expect to see a lot of it. I see Lance backing up the 4 and 5 spots, Possibly a new wing shooter plays some 4, depending on who comes in.

The more I think about it, I’m expecting that Lance may get more minutes than most of us are comfortable with (if Onyenso leaves). I think Bradshaw will mostly be at the 4 beside new big who will get most of the 5.

I suspect Cal will be reluctant to give Bradshaw big minutes at the 5. Honestly, if Onyenso leaves I kind of think Cal will look for another project type big to be able to plug in a few minutes here and there. Or at least to have available whether he plays or not.
