There was an NBA finals game tonight.

You wouldn't know it based on the chatter here or by how the Heat played.

The playoffs have been awesome. I’m afraid the Finals might be a little bit of a letdown though. Not sure Miami has the firepower to hang with LeBron and AD.

Would you rather us say “we’re sorry” or “you’re welcome”?

I am not looking for you to say either of those things. I get that its SPS cool to boldly declare the NBA isnt popular and cite viewership ratings, and social initiatives, but it was surprising to see an NBA finals game was played and there was no discussion here.
There are 3 pages about drivers being ticketed for waiting to eat at a 17ing Wendys.
There are 28 posts about an underage kid named 'Arch' and whether his grandfather will disown him based on the college Arch chooses.
There are 0 threads about the 2nd most popular professional sport in America. <---opportunity for the selective stat pullers to argue!

It was just surprising to see nothing was on here. Almost as surprising as the blowout on the court.

I've had a hard time getting into the NBA for a while now. I used to enjoy watching the playoffs but it's been close to a decade since I've had much interest at all.

It was a horrible game. Just really boring. Lakers were up huge by the half and Miami had Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler go out hurt.

It was a horrible game. I watched it in the background and focused on reading all sorts of **** on my phone. The game didnt captivate me at all. Miami was up big to start, I look up a few minutes later and the Lakers are up big, and I didnt care much.
Maybe its the matchup that will end up being one I dont care a lot about? Ive enjoyed seeing Miami play though. The best thing to come out of the bubble has been nationally televised games for teams that otherwise wouldnt typically be on TNT or ESPN night games. Or better said, wouldnt be televised as frequently as they are now.

I've enjoyed these playoffs but these Finals are about to be over quick and with little drama. Miami having what little fire power they had last night to injuries ruined what may have bee a 6-7 game series.

I literally had no idea. My "I don't keep up with the NBA." is legit and longstanding (since the Jordan/Bulls era).
I haven’t really watched much since Kobe retired. The political stuff didn’t have much impact on my viewing. I really don’t know why, but my basketball interest has really dropped off. Maybe it’s that State basketball has dropped off and killed my overall interest in the sport.

I guess all I can say to this is that when casual sports fans are more interested in Wendy’s and a high school QB than your league’s championship series, it should tell you something about the product that you’re presenting.

Once the Grizz start back, I’ll be tuning in again regardless, but I don’t think there’s much doubt at this point that the NBA has lost a sizeable portion of its fan base

I was watching the Tampa Bay Lightning's boat parade to be honest. They won the Stanley Cup if you missed it, and judging by their TV ratings you have.

I'm really curious as to how much of this is people being tired of politics being injected into everything versus COVID/not having sports accelerating an inevitable decline in viewership as people take advantage of so many more entertainment options. I stopped watching the NBA a while ago, even as the product got better. Just got too busy with other things and once I stopped caring, it got to where it wasn't even entertaining to watch sporadically when I did have time even though the product was pretty good. I know I won't go back anytime soon because of the politics being injected and their insistence on kowtowing to CCP while acting like america is broken, evil, and racist, but I'm not sure it's really changed anything b/c I'm not sure I ever would have gotten drawn back in. Maybe having a MSU player turn into a superstar would have gotten me interested, but if that didn't happen, I can't imagine what would have drawn me back in.

It's really going to be interesting to see what happens to player salaries over the next five to ten years. Surely double digit drops in ratings (the NBA conference finals ratings were atrocious, even after getting the benefit of counting outside the home tvs) is going to impact revenues at some point. I think momentum will keep them at the same level and maybe increasing slightly until tv packages are renegotiated.

Touche. People gravitate to that which interests them. For the SixPack collective, a teenage boy is more interesting than the NBA.
...this fanbase also disowns and cancels its own basketball team though, so maybe SPS' behavior is a bit on the unique side.

I thought of this article when I read your post.
https://deadspin.com/nba-ratings-nosedive-proves-sports-are-not-essential-1844718626

Basically, it rejects the common claimed reasons and proposes the real reason is people have found other **** to watch or do.

I don’t really think its that surprising, and it has nothing to do with social initiatives. The NBA just isn’t that popular in Mississippi or the Southeast in general, and never has been. This is more pronounced now especially in October when it’s football season and everyone has shifted their minds to that, and it’s also 3 months after even “normal” NBA fans are used to watching them play. Then there’s the whole “no fans / Orlando bubble” that turns off many casual viewers as well, because it just really doesn’t feel like the Finals.

I personally enjoy the NBA at a casual level, but also didn’t watch last night just because I had other stuff going on. I also have no connection or rooting interest in either team. I may tune in as it gets closer to the end just for the storylines (LeBron taking a 3rd franchise to the promised land, or Miami preventing that from happening, etc.).

It's got to do with politics. Not all but I bet 75% of the ratings decline is because of the politics. You see folks saying they are through with sports here, I see it in my family and friends group, and you can see it from talking heads in media. You can try and say it's not, but it is.

The duck is here and quacking at you but you're refusing to call it a duck. I'm getting texts from folks in my family in real time saying, "Well, ESPN just started talking politics and telling me to not be racist, so I turned the channel."

It's nauseating for me to watch commercials telling me not to be racist when I don't know what the 17 they're talking about.

I am going to sync the MSU broadcast next game with the TV broadcast. I'm very open minded and I'm not going to give up watching sports no matter how political they make it, but I promise you these athletes are losing out on future salary growth as the ratings keep going down and that's less revenue to fund these massive contracts.

My point is the nba is a political organization that plays games therefore any mention of nba is automatically political and should be lock per board precedent.

Well thats just absurd.
The NBA isnt a political organization, no matter how much you want to stretch reality.

The bold text seems to be directed at me. Do you think I deny the injection of politics and social issues into sports has affected interest?

The NBA started really losing me when the players starting colliding with each other to form super teams.

I also wish the NBA had the stones to have told the Lakers they couldn’t play anymore after they threw their tantrum and said they were quitting
