I think we are going to wind up with a group called “Leveling the Playing Field” or something. I imagine that we easily have 15,000 people would be willing to donate $100 a year towards a cause where every player got a yearly endorsing gig of 40k to make up for the scholarship issue if it meant it brought us a step closer to competing for the National Championship year over year.

So, this raises an issue I haven't seen discussed: at what point is the school entitled to a cut of the players' deals?

This is a prime example. If the gym wants to promote itself as "endorsed by every member of the Miami Hurricanes", then they aren't really using the players' NIL. Its a backdoor way to trade on the school's goodwill.

Its a fine line that will have to be judged case by case. Most of these athletes only have valuable NIL's due to the school they play for.

Its one thing for an ad to say, "Will Bednar here, for Iupe's in Canton," and another for, "I'm Will Bednar, starting pitcher for your National Champion MSU Bulldogs..." Still another issue for Will to appear in an ad wearing MSU gear.

I'm sure schools don't want to take money away from their players, but they have to protect their own trademark rights.

Essentially $24,000 for every 4-year player on the team….from a single endorsement. This is going to be such a **** show. Goodbye to all that is left of college football….we had some good times together.

The off the table stuff is still going to be happening, too. That’s what many people fail to realize. Straight cash gifts are way more beneficial for the player and the financier, where all the money goes to the player and none goes to the federal government….far more efficient. This is only going to supplement what is already happening….not replace it.

Yeah I guess the feds (and states) are all involved now too. NCAA kind of missed their window. All we can really hope for is for the hoopla to die down, and maybe a year or two from now it'll just be a few athletes getting these deals, once all these sponsors figure out how much money they are wasting. Plus with the transfer portal wide open, if a Miami player (or anyone else) finds out they got duped, they can just bail.

The basic tenets of what keeps a football locker room together will still be there. In many ways, the most successful coaches will be the ones who can most easily keep this stuff separated from the actual football program. Players stupidly advertising their opportunities on social media will end up biting them.

There was another article I read back in May that explains how Compass is supposed to help them manage all of the compliance stuff and the taxes. Even so, there’s going to be a lot of players that have never had a job who will lose their mind when that $10,000 endorsement deal they sign turns into $7,000 when they have to pay all the taxes on it. “The Man” will be vilified on social media and some dubmass will say, “My red backpack had $10,00 in it and I didn’t have to give $3,000 to The Man. What did he do to deserve my money?”

The tax aspect is going to work itself out just fine.

The real issue is going to be in a couple of years when Johnny 5* QB goes to some blueblood with $500k in endorsements before he ever plays a snap. Then the (probably valid) question is going to be why an 18 year old freshmen should be expected to waste any time passing (or even attending) his Intro to Theater class when he already has more money than most actual college graduates will make in their first 7-8 years in the real world.

Then you’re going to see the academic requirements get challenged, they’ll go away, and all the major schools will just start creating football “degree programs” where they will earn credit hours for workouts, team meetings, film reviews, practices, and minor coursework like financial planning for athletes, intro to teaching / coaching, officiating, athletic training, etc. That’s the end game….university sponsored professional sports teams.
