The Syracuse reminder

As I've written many times, the thing that separates college football from all other sports is, #1: Unpredictability.

Here's a 3-3 Syracuse team that knocks off #2 and 6-0 Clemson, 27-24, AND NEVER TRAILED IN THE GAME!

The Orange had more passing yards than Clemson, the defending national champs; Syracuse had more rushing yards than Clemson; they did it with NO 100-yard rusher (just a 5-man rushing committee); they did it with NO 100-yard receiver (just a 6-man reception committee); Syracuse had NO fumbles and NO passes intercepted.

I kept having flashbacks to the 4-7 Pitt team that beat a #2 WVU team that I was convinced would win the national title if it beat the Panthers.

The players are in that age group of 18-22, which is unpredictable whether it's football or driving a car or pursuing females or attending classes or just about anything that falls into the category of "It seemed like a good idea at the time."

I did it at that age. Most of you on this board probably did it at that age unless you were prim and proper and not a lot of fun to be around. It's in our DNA at that age group.

Now, let's hope WVU can knock off Top 25 Texas Tech and keep rolling to first place in the Big 12. After all, we have unpredictably on our side. It's been documented and certified.

M istakes by special teams + absence of Simms & Long = loss to Virginia Tech, 31-24

O bliterated East Carolina, 56-20

U nhinged Delaware State, 59-16

N ot sharp but beat Kansas, 56-34

E rectile dysfunction Iowa State

The Syracuse reminder is that all the sports experts on forums like this who love to bash old Big East teams just got a wake up call in reality.

That, too. No wonder I love college football and, in particular, West Virginia football.

College football is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get.

And, as you indicate, the experts don't see it coming any better than the amateurs.

Mountaineer Field is going to be rocking on Saturday with a sellout crowd, temperatures in the 70s and no rain in sight. I can't wait to sing "Country Roads" after my alma mater's victory.

That's one thing that IS predictable: That I will sing my heart out if WVU wins when "Country Roads" music blares from the Mountaineer Field sound system.

And #8/#9 Washington State lost to California on the same day. Two major upsets on the same day. Say it: Unpredictable!

Let's goooo, Mountaineers. Knock off Texas Tech and keep this Top 25 spinout going!
