So now that Duren is officially off the board, I hope everyone is ready to focus on the team we have.

I think it’s time to quit beating some of the dead horses we have been beating and focus on what we have rather than a what we missed out on.

I just wanted to post a thread for positive comments as we get ready for this coming season.

How will Cal turn Covid into his way out this year? Especially with the tough schedule we have this year, I’m going to say 3 loses before SEC play and 5 loses in league play. Just a guess but a lot better then last year.

I'm excited about our guards and shooting but concerned about our bigs.I think Toppin/Brooks should be able to handle the 4 but the 5 is a worry. We just know how Sec refs are and he had foul trouble a lot at West Virginia.I like Ware and he plays hard but is still so raw on offense and I think it might take him until his Junior year to be a threat.Collins is rated very high but it's hard to expect much from a kid who started playing at 16 and just started lifting weights at UK.I think he might block shots but give us nothing on offense. The key is Oscar MUST stay on the floor and finish games.

I understand your concerns, and agree for the most part. However I think you are underestimating the role Bryce Hopkins could play on this team. He’s not a 5 by any means, but he can be a Chuck Hayes or Julius Peppers type player for us. Big body but still quick on his feet. Gives us some fouls, can rebound and score. The lineup would look different with Oscar in foul trouble, but it could work.

I do like the roster, it has very good veterans, good guards and there is young potential in several positions.

We have a few players that, with the right type of offense, can light it up, but Cal can't run the same stagnant, outdated offense he’s been running and I think he knows that.

This team could go middle of the pack in the SEC, or they could challenge for the crown and a FF.

We'll never know how hard Cal tried to recruit Duren. Guys like Duren are the types of one-on-done players we should be landing. He’s a sure fire star. I'm not sure how he would have fit, but I would have liked to see it.

Either way, I'm good with the roster we have, now it comes down to coaching.

It may be set but that doesn't mean it's perfect. There are plenty of question marks heading into the season. For one it'd be great if our playmaker PG had a dominant force to work with inside for some lobs and alley oops. The problem is that someone like Kofi would've been perfect for that.

Then you have the shooters coming in, I'm hopeful it does work out. It's just not a roster that strikes me as being so elite that I'd be comfortable with saying how great they are this early. Some teams like 2012 and 2015 you can tell they're great before they even step on the floor.

Who's minutes will Hopkins be taking though? Brooks and Oscar are shoe ins for those two starting spots, then you have Toppin, Collins and Ware. I don't see much pt for Bryce.

Lobs, dunks and Kofi in the middle = Cal's normal outdated offense. If some of us are correct, our offense will be 3 or 4 guards and lots of outside shooting.

Kofi is not a good fit for that.

It’s the best constructed roster we’ve seen here in a few years. There are three guys who can play point guard, five really good shooters to man the wing positions (counting TyTy at both PG and SG), and a great combination of proven production and potential at the PF and C positions.

There’s no need to shoehorn a PF into the SF or C position. There will be a distributor on the floor along with two shooters at all times.

The big question for me is defense. The offense ought to be really good.

If Oscar does get into some foul trouble, it will be small ball time like most fans have been wanting
Exactly. Collins is a 5-star and is a backup. People are crying about not having enough inside, yet we are looking at a 5-star backup at the 5. We also have a 4-star 3rd string backup in Ware.

If that is our weak spot on paper, I feel pretty good about this team.

Thanks for letting me know that I'm not a fan of a team I've rooted for all my life (41 years)!

I hate to put it on one guy, but the one guy we have that can make or break this team, is Tyty Washington.

Wheeler is okay, but his lack of height and length will prevent him from being a star. Tyty has the length and athletesism to be the best pg in the SEC.

Wheeler and Mintz can hold the Fort down for a while, but if we are to have any shot at a FF, Tyty is going to have to be a star.

when I look at this roster I see a lot of good players but no top 10 pick. Now if tyty can develop into a top 5-10 pick like brandon knight did we could be very good. The other thing I wonder is which player ends up in Cals dog house. Someone will end up there and also wonder if everyone will accept their role and not leave mid season.

Great post.

I agree 100%.

PG was our downfall last season, Washington has to come through in a big way if we want to be significantly better.

I think he can be the man, but we shall see.

I'm concerned because we don't have one elite player on this roster.

Cal has never been to a Final Four without a legitimate lottery pick. Collins might be that guy, but unlike guys like Randle, Knight, and Towns, he's going to have to make a massive jump in one season in order to pull it off.

They key will be Brooks/Toppin having good years…Oscar will be fine and we have capable backups. Also it will depend on if Cal plays Allen and gets him shots along with the other shooters. Need 3 bonafide shooters playing at all times.

I want to be excited, I really do, but as usual this team has one glaring weakness, We are still missing that one player that we need, which is at the five position. We have zero depth at five position. Oscar over his career has only average around 25 minutes per game. Extremely foul prone. When that happens we really don’t have anybody that can step in and contribute at a high-level. That’s why Cal totally screwed up by passing on Kofi. Unfortunately for him I’m afraid that’s going to come back to bite him in the rear really hard. We shall see. Hopefully I’m wrong.

We need more than a capable back up. The 5 position could spell trouble. Who’s gonna play the five when Oscar is out? Oscars only gonna play around 20 to 25 minutes per game. Who fills in those other 20 minutes? Toppin? Keion? Maybe Collins can but he is so raw that I wouldn’t bet on it.

Well
That would be half the losses of last year so significantly better :).

I think Lance Ware has the potential to be a really good backup 5.

The problem with the Kofi/Oscar scenario is, neither is a backup, they are both primary guys and when we're talking about playing at least 3 guards, it just doesn't make sense to have Kofi AND Oscar out there.

Ware has the tools to be a really good 5 in short spurts.
