The reality

I have a friend who has had season tickets for around 30 years. He is a banker and has run a tailgate party for friends and family and a few long time clients. His tailgate is just west of the I-180 overpass. In fact, he is my source for tickets when I come to town. He has not missed a home game in 25 years and has had his tailgate going for every game since 1993. He is one of the most die hard Husker fans I have ever known.

So I just asked my sister, who lives in Greenwood and who always goes to this tailgate, if she was going today. She said "no" because our friend decided not to go to the game today or do the tailgate. She said he told her on the phone "I just don't give a **** about this coach or team and I'm not going to waste my time and money on it".

Please spare me now the self appointed super fan ******** about fair weather fans or how this guy is a bad fan and that a "true fan" would still be there supporting the team no matter what. Because this guy is a true fan.

But my point is this: I don't think my friend is atypical. Husker fans are very loyal and have supported this team for decades and have put up with a TON of **** over the past twenty years. So also spare me the superfan ******** about how "delusional" and stupid our fan base is. This is a smart and long suffering fan base. Nobody expects 1995 again. What they want is a competitive team again.

But the apathy is here and it is real.

So contrary to all those posters on here saying "Thanks Mike Riley! Hip hip hooray to you for being such a swell guy!", I say instead:
"Goodbye Mike Riley and good riddance. Don't let the door hit you in the *** on the way out. Good luck with your next 'adventure' ".

Yes. Because he has brought the Huskers to new lows. I just want him gone.
So by "just" wanting him gone you'll say it in a ugly manner?

I feel I know you relatively well as a poster Pennsy and I don't take you as a person who would say something lile that to Riley's face. Not because you'd be to chickenshit to do so, but because you're not that kind of ugly person. So if you wouldn't say it to Riley's face then why type it out? You're much better than this.

I don't have much real vitriol toward Riley. I don't congratulate him for hanging around and wasting our time for 3 years. I'm just sorta numb toward him at this point, and want him to move on and be nothing more than a footnote to our program. More upset with Harvey and Eichorst than anything.

Yep. You are entirely correct. But right now I am really pissed.
I also did it just for a little message board shock value. Got a little tired reading the "Thank you coach Riley" posts from posters who have been routinely trashing him for months. Enough with the fake nice. Admit it and be honest: we are happy he is going

Weird time to be pissed I guess. We all know Riley isn't going to be retained for some time now, yet now is the time to act like a jerk?

I'd at least understand your post more after the NIU, Ohio St, Minnesota games....

There are lots of nice guys in the world. And Mike Riley is one of them.
But he is a lousy football coach who should never have been hired. He made multi millions coaching here and will now get a big buyout.
But he trashed this team. And I, for one, am glad he is leaving.
Agreed. Calling a spade, a spade, isnt ugly.

That said, I believe some of the frustrations and animosity we fans feel is due to what Pennsy is slightly touching on. It's that we know he was way in over his head and trashed this program as a result anyway. He could have stepped down and did us a favor. But, he didnt. Knowing Riley as a nice man, I believe some of us fans would argue he should step down and not accept a large buy out, that he doesn't deserve.

I believe it's hard not to feel "gipped" given the circumstances. Then, when this person takes millions from you, all the while, smiling and shrugging... it tends to make some people a bit angry. I don't blame anyone for that.

It's getting to be that way for a lot of people and when I heard they were going to expand the stadium years ago I thought they were crazy, and if anything they should have removed seats. I cannot remember caring less about a game on Black Friday in my entire life. Having said all that I wish nobody any ill will, inc MR. It's just time to turn the page.

I think you will be even more pissed after this game. I have a strange feeling that when they announce the new coach, a lot of people will be more pissed. I hope not, but fans need to be prepared that Frost might not even come here. But yes, I'm pissed and have been for 13 years.

Read my op again. I am pissed because I never thought I would see the day that the most die hard, rabid Husker fan I have ever known starts to say "I really don't give a **** anymore". It just really hit home to me how far down the rabbit hole of apathy Riley has driven this program. To be sure, it has been 20 years in the making. But he has brought it to new lows.

So yeah... I am pissed that our great fan base has been forced to endure this. And I just felt like expressing, bluntly, how freaking happy I am that Guy Smiley is being shown the door.

Sorry if you think that makes me a jerk. Maybe I am allowed to be a jerk once in a while when something I care about has been ruined

I have thought for sometime this program needed a reboot. For years we have been going along winning 9 games but getting blown out in the important ones. This goes back to Solich. Finally we have been broken down to the bottom, i believe it took this to get the adminstrations head on straight to make the decisions to rebuilding.

As bad as it is right now this the low point it gets better imo from here on

You and I have differing opinions on the situation. I see things similar to Pennsy. My previous post is my stance.

You don't have to see it the way I do. I'm not asking you to. But, to have a differing opinion doesn't make us jerks.

In a few hours this will all be over. There’s no sense in getting upset now. All we can do is support the kids and wait for the new staff to be announced. We can all be upset with what this program has become under Riley, but I will never understand anyone being mad at Riley. He tried. He just failed. No need to be upset. He has handled this whole thing better than 99% of people would ever handle even a fraction of the pressure, disrespect and downright hostility he has been shown the last 3 months. I just hope this fan base can try to live up to the “best fans” mantra we love to bestow upon ourselves and give mike Riley a little respect for being an adult in the face of adversity. He deserves that.

You are worse than a jerk--you have a shallow life perspective knowing that your unhappiness with your favorite college team can bring such vile out of you. Dude, get some hobbies and spend time with your family. Get a perspective on life.

What he "deserves" is his paycheck. And nobody should be sending him nasty tweets and emails and other ********.
But on a Husker message board I am perfectly entitled to say that I think he has been our worst coach in 60 years and to to express how happy I am he is going,

No, sorry, I don't get your point. Pelini was a jerk, period. I think Pennsy is just having a venting session. I don't think he's being a jerk at all. He's displaying the frustration all of us are feeling. I'm guessing there is going much worse on this site starting at about 3:10, with the crescendo being at app. 6:30 this evening. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see it.

Forgive me but I will never care who the coach is or if I like him or not. I love my Huskers and always will. I’m still a Husker fan even during bad seasons and will still go root them on during bad season. It’s nothing to do with “Super Fan” or anything like that. It’s just being a fan in general. You should always root your team on, good or bad seasons. Like a few said and we all know this, Riley’s gone after today. So why refuse to root your team on now? Stupid in my opinion but again it’s my opinion. I’ll never refuse to be Husker fan even when we have bad season.

Sorry but don’t get mad if someone doesn’t see another fan as a “true fan” when they refuse to be a Husker fan due to bad season or a HC. Again, it should always be about the team. Not just one player/coach, correct?

Honest question here. Why is it not understandable why someone might feel a tad angry with Riley?

I get the "He tried. He failed". But, he wasn't working for small money here... it's millions.

You sound like a babbling fool. Where are you getting envy and jealousy from his post? If anything, he is longing for the days where we were a much more solid program. So...he's jealous of our own program?? That makes entirely no sense.

I heard some of the same stories during Callahan's time here, Pelini's time here and now Riley's time here. People giving up season tickets they've had forever, tailgate spots, etc. Let's not act like this is something new. It's been 20 years since we've won a natty and 18 years since we've won a conference title. Empathy has set in for some long before this. Congrats to your friend for waiting this long to pack it in.

And sorry, but I don't think using a colloquial turn of phrase like "good riddance, don't let the door hit you in the ***..." is all that "jerky". Geez.
I didn't wish him any ill will or misfortune. I didn't call for zombies to eat his children. I didn't attack him personally in terms of his character.
I used a common phrase for expressing that you are really glad someone is going.
My apologies if some on here were really offended by that phrase.

Thank you. This is a man we paid millions to run the most important sports "franchise" in the State, not the nice guy neighbor who helped me fix my son's treehouse over a weekend.

And for the record... I am not "angry" with Riley per se. I don't even know the dude. I am a bit pissed for the reasons you just nailed.

I haven't been to a game in a several years now. Having three kids is probably a big reason, but the product on the field has not justified it in a long time. I spent way too much on a USC ticket in 07. I went to a few Pelini games early on, but I think it's been 6 or 7 years now.

What's most disappointing to me about this current situation isn't that I was wrong about Riley, but how terribly ugly people act toward Riley and Co and actually believe its justified.
