Development of players by improvement of players' skills is one of the biggest keys to being a successful college basketball coach. What players have actually improved in multiple years of playing for Cal? Offhand I can think of these-Calipari recruited and signed these players
Nearly all, if not all, have regressed in skills.
Darius Miller
Terrence Jones
Doron Lamb
Willie Cauley Stein
Derek Willis
Dominique Hawkins
Tyler Ulis
PJ Washington
Nick Richards
Immanuel Quickley
Looking at this list, what stands out to me is that all of these players who improved significantly at UK were recruited before 2019, which is also about the time Cal started bringing in yearly plug and play transfers. I am not suggesting transfers prevent other players from improving. Instead, that was a time when Cal started fishing for quick fixes through the transfer process, rather than investing sweat equity in roster building. It screams boredom. This is also about the time our gazillion dollar staff of assistant coaches (Antigua, Chin) was hired to assume the grind of the coaching burden. Say what you will. To me, this was the bored Cal, succumbing to losing his competitive edge at that time.
BTW, did anyone notice that the Arkansas game on Tuesday would have been an ideal time to mix in some zone defense? Arkansas is not a very good perimeter shooting team. But we could not keep them out of the lane, which was where they were killing us. Layup after layup after layup. Stubbornly refusing to switch up defenses in order to outthink the opponent is another piece of evidence that Cal won't invest the sweat equity to develop and facilitate a competitive roster. Absolute power corrupts.
