The problem with the portal is on us, the fanbase. It is not at all on Pike. He has proven that top tier players want to play for him, but he needs a competitive budget.

As much as a top portal target may like to play for pike, they’re not going to turn down a 200-300% increase in NIL.

I'm not sure why people are not realizing that money is the answer to most of Pike's problems. I guess ignorance is bliss?

What portal 5 is performing well that didn’t cost a boatload of money?
Okpomo, Cook and Ogundele all look quite serviceable compared to Martini. Also how do I know it was money and not Lathan saying don’t pursue one. Seems we would have been better off pooling our money for a rebounder rather than spending it on Martini and others.

Yes Ace and Dylan got money from endorsements but a TON of Rutgers NIL also went to them and rightfully so. They surrounded them with what they could considering what they had left. Cliff is proof that the portal money was out of control this year.
Where is your proof that Ace and Dylan got a TON of RU NIL money? I’ve heard just the opposite from my R Fund guy. I also know that RU does not even have a ton of NIL money.

if endorsement money only they could have gone anywhere and topped it off with school nil. makes no sense that huge ru money wasn’t involved in either case. Makes even less sense that this was the case for both players. While there may not be proof, any other explanation defies logic and common sense.

Of course NIL is a big part of it. We just played a team where Cliff didn’t do much but got paid a rumored 7 figures. Ace and Dylan got paid but not from traditional NIL sources like our portal players would. Have you been over to the football and seen this discussed repeatedly? The Rutgers base in general wants the nicest things but doesn’t “buy in” like a lot of other fan bases do.
My old hs football coach is a former Rutgers player and close with the football program and anything athletic dept related

His sentiment is that schiano and pike are probably as good as we can do and the types of guys we bring in talent wise from the portal and the results that follow are probably as good as it gets unless something changes

Take that to mean whatever you want but essentially he’s saying we’re probably a mid pack athletic program in football and basketball until fans and supporters with champagne taste expand their pallet by expanding their wallets

Otherwise we can continue to debate if we belong in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl or Duke Mayo Bowl and occasionally sweat out selection Sunday or host an NIT game every year

I think it’s well known their NIL is largely from endorsements and not from the Rutgers fan base

But most of the people on here stating money and NIL can’t be the issue are the same people who sit near me in section 304 and complained your season tickets went up a few dollars and that you have to pay to park

Yeah I don’t but this at all. We’re getting plenty of open looks. Were missing open 3s. We’re not taking bad contested threes.
Thank you. I thought I was the only one feeling this way. I see these guys, especially Martini, getting plenty of open looks. They're just not making them. This includes free throws too. They need to perform better.

It was the same thing with Gavin Griffiths. People moaned that no sets were run for him, but I saw that guy take and miss tons of open shots. I guess they don't run sets at Nebraska because he ain't exactly lightin' it up there either.

Please, everyone stop with the Pike needs more time to figure roles out. He's been a D1 head coach for over 20 tears and he's had the summer, 8 games, and several months of practice to evaluate players. Izzo and Hurley would need about a week.
Except for the fact that Izzo's teams are historically much better come February than they are at years end.

I'm going off of what Richie said that a couple of people stepped up with big money for this specific opportunity and are taking a wait and see approach with this season to see if they continue to do it.

Yeah Izzo is a weird example given that tons of Michigan State teams, at least recently, have gotten off to pretty slow starts and been good later in the year. Just seems like more “Me no like bad Pike man. Bad Pike man lose game.” type stuff.

hes also built 40 years of goodwill with the selection committee and built a brand where like it or not they will do everything they can to get them into the tournament based on that exact sentiment

a "hot" rutgers team will be a nice story in march but if we dont have 20 wins before the big 10 tournament we will be sweating out making the first four

fair or foul the blue blood programs get as long of a leash as needed

case in point unc was 1-10 v q1 2 years ago when they were also left out and the committee STILL gave them a long look at making it in spite of that
