This isn't about Mag, who actually wouldn't matchup well against this type of roster or Iowa, Indiana etc....this is a relatively easy game to isolate.
If you are removing Indiana making circus shots and layups and shooting 73% from the floor in the 1st 12 minutes of the game, IU went 8 minutes without a basket. IU finished 45% from the floor.
Illinois is more athletic 1 through 4 than Indiana, but that doesn't mean it should equate to more effective offense.
When Illinois struggles, it is the typical way most teams do......keep them (Terrance Shannon) out of transition. If you make Illinois (like Indiana) run their offense, RU will get stops and limit them to 1 shot.
The flip side of this game for RU is really simple. Paul Mulcahy must come off the basketball and avoid overdribbling. Illinois is much like what we saw vs Indiana, who actually defended at a higher level than usual. IU made RU possessions a disaster when Paul was being forced to dribble or move sideways or back up, instead of passing the ball and moving without the ball.
The problem is, RU is really more stationary and has to make crisp passes. Which means Cliff could be turnover prone out of the post.....Mulcahy needs to avoid turning it over when he has it and Caleb needs to also be more aware and get his shot attempts along the baseline and wing.
This is a repeat of the IU game. Playing Palmquist and letting him take 6 to 7 threes, early in the shot clock is better than asking Paul to overdribble/create and lead to easy baskets.
Hyatt also needs 12 to 14 shot attempts....early offense is probably better than holding onto the ball late in the shot clock and hoping we can find Cam Spencer.
RU has a talent gap vs Illinois, who has a much more talented roster 1 through 10 or so. But, I just don't see the adjustments made quickly enough by Illinois coach Brad Underwood. He is probably the one coach I just don't see enough out of him and his staff on a game in-game out basis. I really like RU and Pike and our staff way more for 40 minutes.
I think we'll see enough production from Hyatt, Palmquist and Simpson and I just can't imagine Illinois stopping Cliff all game. I also don't see another no-show by Paul and Caleb, so even if the RU bench isn't huge like it was vs Indiana, it will be enough.
RU 68, Illinois 62
