The NFL 100 greatest is a joke

To honor their "greatest QBs" at SuperBowl 54, which includes an active QB in Tom Brady, but doesn't include the current all-time leader in passing yards and passing TDs.

Who decided that Brees wasn't among the best?

Hester had over 14,000 all purpose yards in a 156 game career. He was a game changer in his prime.

I don’t see how Marino makes that team and Brees doesn’t. Somebody explain it to me.

Brees couldn't hold Marino's jock strap.*

Dan Marino is one of the very best to play the game and is in the hall of fame. Brees should have gotten a shout out, but not at the expense of Marino.

You think Marino was better than Brees? I’m genuinely curious to know if many people hold that opinion.

In my opinion yes. And I wasn't a huge Marino fan. But the problem is trying to compare greatness across different eras. It's a different game now.

Marino played when it was legal for guys like LT to try and decapitate a QB and WR’s weren’t able to run all over the field unmolested.

That one was for you Jack!

I just think it's a silly argument, it's why I used *, but looks like that was missed. I agree, you don't remove a HOF qb to add Brees, that's just silly. I don't think anything said will make 11th understand.

If we are going to say special teams are important, then having the best kick returner in pro history is probably necessary. Three time All-Pro, more special teams TD's than any one.

That’s because nothing that has been said so far has been compelling. You wanna go by stats? Brees is better. Championships? Brees is better. Marino is in the HOF? Brees will be first ballot as well.

I agree. Just imagine if Marino played during a time when you couldn't hit him and his recivers.

Agreed. Both are good. I happen to believe Marino was better.

Yep. Of the NFL top 10 for career record for TD passes- SIX were active this past season. Eli Manning is one and he just retired. Dan Marino is one of the three that isn't active FWIW.

Of the NFL top 10 for career passing yardage SIX were active including Eli....and Matt Ryan.

For the NFL record for passer rating 8 of the top 10 single seasons are still active. The other two seasons for single season passer rating are held by recently retired Peyton Manning.

QB's are playing longer or it seems that way and they're definitely throwing more with rules advantages that weren't there before. The training is better.

Guys like Brady are in their 40's and talking about playing at least 2-3 more years. And it doesn't look like it's out of the question at all.

Marino threw for 5000 yards back when it was an actual accomplishment. When he did it nobody thought anybody would ever do it again.

Brees leads yard and TDS because of rules changes, he’ll be passed almost assuredly by Aaron Rodgers or Stanford, who will both be passed by Mahomes and probably even Baker Mayfield.

I get that Brees is a sacred cow. A lot of us are Saints fan and there's a huge measure of homerism applied here. It's not an affront to him to say that one of the top five to ever play the game was better than him.

Brees is great and nobody in this thread has said otherwise. But he shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence as Dan Marino, for reasons already mentioned by others in this thread, along with the fact that Marino played on a team that had virtually no running game for most of his career and defensive holding penalties were pretty much non-existent. In a lot of ways, QBs like Marino revolutionalized the game for the generation that game after him.

If you don't account for the eras in which they played, there's no point. Otherwise you end up thinking every modern QB is better than Joe Montana.

Once you account for that, Brees's stats are not better.

Hester was better at returning punts than kicks. Cordarrelle Patterson is the best true kick returner in my opinion, especially considering he's played in an era where they've tried to eliminate that part of the game.

Oh I’m biased for sure. I try not to be, but Brees is my favorite player ever. And I get that other players played in an era where QB and WR hits were vicious and commonplace, but something that never gets brought up is the fact that defensive players are bigger, stronger, and faster than they were just 20 years ago. To the guy that says that 5,000 yards is no longer a big deal, there have been twelve 5,000 yard passing seasons ever. Drew Brees has done it 5 times. No one else has done it more than once. Thanks for the feedback, Drebin. I guess as a homer I was shocked that Brees isn’t considered a top 10 all-time quarterback.
