After Saturday, I think everyone who had hoped he'd turn it around is seeing that Mullen isn't getting it done. So now it's time to talk about realistic candidates. Here are a few I think are realistic. These aren't in any order other than the first one who is my favorite.

1. PJ Fleck

This guy is exactly what we are looking for. Lots of fire and his staff is recruiting lights out for a MAC team. His major flaw is that he is not a southerner and his staff is all northerners as well. Personally he'd be my first target, but I'm sure there are others who could be successful.

2. Art Briles

It wouldn't be there first time a coach who made his name in Texas came to MSU looking for redemption. The negatives are obvious and numerous. That's a thing we have to take seriously but his resume has to be taken seriously as well. The guy can flat out coach.

3. Skip Holtz

His USF turn wasn't great. That's a huge red flag. However, his time in Ruston has been impressive. This is the fall-back plan if we miss on one of our better candidates. I don't see him being any worse than Mullen in his current condition.

4. Ed Orgeron

It would've been crazy to suggest this just 5 years ago but man can this guy flat out recruit. He may not be an option because there's at least a coin-flip's chance he gets the LSU job. However, if he is passed over again (especially if he does well as the interim) he'd be motivated to take a HC job where he can show USC, LSU & OM that he can get it done. Not ideal, but not bad either. He'd need a strong OC hire.

5. Jeff Brohm

He's a Petrino disciple and knows offense. I'm not sure how well he recruits but his name is in the LSU search so he may not be available. If he doesn't land in Baton Rouge he'd be a great option.

Zero chance Mullen gets fired this year. Sorry buddy.

He may leave on his own but no way a new AD comes in and for his first act fires the winningest coach in MSU history.

I had completely forgotten Croom was the winningest coach in our history coming off a year in which we lost the greatest player in our history, Tyson Lee.

Also, the names in the OP are terrible options. None of those is an upgrade.

A warm body that wants to be here is better than Mullen. Get this through your thick skull:

HE. DOES. NOT. WANT. TO. BE. HERE.

Maybe you enjoyed the last couple years. I did too. But he has been ready to move on since November of 2014.

It doesn't matter if he'd won 10 national titles! If he is checked out mentally and emotionally we need to move on. Only bad things can happen if we let this situation fester on the principle that we somehow owe it to him. If that's what we owe him than let's get that salary back!

He didn't say anything about firing Mullen. If you haven't noticed... Mullen has being trying like hell to leave on his own.

Most critics of Mullen the last 15 months is that he has wanted OUT! Therefore Mullen has NOT given Relentless Effort to recruiting, coaching, evaluating his coaching staff, evaluating current talent, evaluating and modifying his scheme to fit personnel, or recruiting. Did I list Recruiting twice? Should have been 3 times.

But another reason I believe they both want out is because their children are becoming school age. They know they will probably have to send them to private school for early years at least if they stay here. How do you look an Mom in the eye when recruiting kids from under-performing public schools and tell them how great their sons are great student athletes who will fit in great at MSU? Maybe it would not be an issue in our State.....

BS! Anyone is better than this version of Dan Mullen. I'd take anyone in that list over this Mullen. You're assuming the past Mullen is one and the same and I disagree.

I have no clue where Dan sends his kids, but Starkville Schools have made great improvement in the last few years, in fact many from the academy have left to come to public school since the consolidation.

You might take them over Mullen, but that doesn't make them upgrades. Only Briles on this list is an improvement over Mullen and I'm not sure we want to be the school that weathers that PR storm, especially after the way we handled Jeffrey Simmons.

I don't like what I'm seeing out of Mullen this year either, but he's earned this one bad year. If next year is more of the same he'll be gone.

The OP said Mullen isn't getting it done so it's time to talk about replacements.

Doesn't sound like he thinks Mullen is earning an upgrade somewhere.

I agree.

There could be a situation where the new AD says you have to change staff, Mullen says, "No, I'll resign first!" (ala Croom) and AD says, "Sounds good to me."

Is this true? I heard it got much worse after consolidation.

Art Briles is an excellent football coach and has won big time at every level he's reached.

The school that hires Art Briles will become an absolute Black Sheep with every media outlet in the country. Every women's and victim's rights group, reporter, columnist, TV personality, and other non-sports outlet in the country will crucify them.

If Mississippi State hired him Shepard Smith would spend a year detailing Briles' record and make certain every viewer in America knows what terrible people we are to hire him and that the only reason we would forsake our morals (aGain) is because we desperately want to beat Ole Miss.

If you're not familiar with what he did, here's a short excerpt:

"Football staff conducted their own untrained internal inquiries, outside of policy, which improperly discredited complainants and denied them the right to a fair, impartial and informed investigation, interim measures or processes promised under University policy.

In some cases, internal steps gave the illusion of responsiveness to complainants but failed to provide a meaningful institutional response under Title IX.... As a result, some football coaches and staff abdicated responsibilities under Title IX and Clery; to student welfare; to the health and safety of complainants; and to Baylor’s institutional values"

You must not know a lot about this business in this age. In case you haven't noticed he is the second highest paid state employee in Mississippi. He is NOT performing to the level of income he is making off of the backs of the people of Mississippi State. Furthermore, his condescending attitude and remarks, along with his continued lack of interest and respect for Mississippi State has become as much or more of a lightening rod than the W/L column for many, including me to be done with him.
He is paid $4M+, therefore we don't owe him a ******* thing; HE OWES US and HE IS NOT DELIVERING, nor is he going to anymore!
As for Briles, what's wrong with him? Are you interested in winning or what some media type thinks of the program? Regardless if its him or someone else, I want the best fit we can get and I don't care what anyone outside of Mississippi State thinks about it because every time we start to win the outsiders don't like us anymore!
As for Mullen, I would have had my flag at the top of the pole if he had been fired last night!

I hate hearing that Mullen has "earned the right to have a bad year" I wish my employer would allow me to check out mentally and do nothing for a year.

Look man, I get that you're pissed. I am too. Everybody is. I sat through every single awful snap of that shitshow yesterday. We're bad.

I'm just saying "fire Mullen" is a bad idea unless you've got a true Ben Howland-type guy lined up. I don't think there's one out there, and I don't see the guys you listed as upgrades over Mullen, except Briles and that's on the field only. (Even then I'm not sure how he'd do in Mississippi. Many of his assistants are local Stephenville TX guys that have been with him since his high school days. That's part of the reason he covered up the rapes, it was his old buddies that "handled it" with the young ladies).

It is REALLY hard to make a great coaching hire in football. Look at Notre Dame, USC, Texas and Oregon. More money than God and they CANNOT seem to find good coaches. Oregon actually got lucky that Belotti hired Kelly as OC from New Hampshire, otherwise they might still be looking for the next Belotti.

Look at our last four coaching hires. I'd say we're batting about .500, so it's really a coin flip whether or not we improve over Mullen.

Just because we're willing to pay the next guy $4 million doesn't mean he'll win 8-9 games a year. I cheer for the same team you do btw. I want to win em all.

I know. Not sure how old you are but I've seen it MUCH MUCH worse than we are now, although that first half Saturday was as bad as I've seen in 25 years. Inexcusable.
I don't think Mullen has really quit, I just think he's reaping what he's sewn. Keeping Hevesy on the last few years may end up costing him his job.
