The more of a big deal we make out of the knight on horseback and not the cartoon, the better. The cartoon is for places a horse can't go. Period. (But at least the facial expression is so much better from my era, when a grinning idiot was the head.)

his name is Marty, why is everyone trying to name a horse that already has a name

The name of the first Scarlet Knight horse was “Duke” according to its rider, Oscar Huh. He only appeared in the inaugural season of 1955 and then was replaced the following year according to the October 3, 1982 Home News.

I sent an email over to the Robert Roselli, the Fan Experience guy at the athletic department ( [email protected]) and made the suggestion. Would be good if you all did the same.

I like the idea of a permanent name of Lord Henry. I think it ties in the past Lords (Esperanto and Nelson) with something that is Rutgers (Henry).

Prefer Colonel Henry.

Why are we trying to the name the horse as if IT is the mascot? We are the Scarlet Knights not the Scarlet Horses. The Georgia mascot has a name because it is a Bulldog. The Texas mascot has a name because it is a Longhorn.

And Colonel Henry is taken, thank you very much.

I don't think there needs to be a why for something like this other then it's fun. And there are plenty of other animals and things representing college teams beside their namesake. The Oklahoma Sooners have ponies Boomer and Sooner, Navy Midshipmen have Bill the Goat, Georgetown Hoyas have Jack the bulldog. As mentioned by others, USC and Fla State are similar to us in that their mascot is not a horse but they have a tradition of a named horse. Even more bizarre is the Auburn Tigers who have Nova, the golden Eagle.

Just my opinion but I think stuff like this make college sport even better. Not suggesting RU start inventing things but our horse is right there.

When I read metal mascot, I immediately imagined a knight with an Iron Maiden t-shirt

Someone here had a flag made up with Eddie in full trooper gear holding an RU flag

It

Raritan River. - But he would probably have to also run in some races with that name. Wouldn't have a lack of energy from football.

The final home game of the 2007 season was also the final game for a Rutgers mascot with a decade of loyal service, “Lord Espartero IV, the horse that roams that Rutgers Stadium field during every game, retired after 10 years of service…” according to the November 18, 2007 Star-Ledger. The 30 year old replaced Lord Nelson as the last Scarlet Knight mascot.

According to the February 7, 2015 Times of Trenton, Lord Nelson joined the Rutgers University Department of Public Safety as a police horse and from 1978-2000 did double duty as the longest-serving Scarlet Knight living mascot in Rutgers history. Lord Nelson was retired to the Gales Way Farm in Wrightstown, NJ and in 2015, at the age of 42, he became the first to win the “Horse Personality of the Year” award from the New Jersey Equine Advisory Board, a division of the Department of Agriculture. One year in a horse’s life is roughly equal to three years for a human. So Lord Nelson was the amazing equivalent of 126 years old in human terms!
When they announced his retirement at the game, my entire section stood up and chanted, "one more year, one more year . . . . . ."

So Big 10 blonde gal f'd the story up about the horses saying that Lord Nelson was the previous..WRONG..i hope RU didnt give her a bad press release

Yes Lord Nelson was the horse that got a penalty for the running on the field during the Army game but he retired sometime in the late 90s. He died in 2015 at 42.

Lord Espartero IV took then took over but retired in 2007

It would appear Marty was the horse since 2008 season. What happened to Marty seems a mystery. Not sure why Rutgers went radio silent on him and the BTN girl said the previos horse Lord Nelson died

Just not sure why Rutgers couldn't produce the right timeline for BTN

For a recurring horse name, I vote for either Leggy (after William Leggett) or Bruce (after the Boss).

The cartoon mascot name is Sir Henry. He was named by the band because they used to yell that to him as a joke a few years ago since they said he should have a name, and it kind of stuck and then the athletic department made it official:

yes the white horse’s name was Marty, and he was awesome. Not spooked by the stadium. Used to come to band camp to get used to the pregame sounds and would get all the pets and love. Super friendly. No idea what happened to him, sad that RU won’t acknowledge anything - still small time. You think Texas would just show up with a new BEVO that was a totally different color and just let the fans imagine what happened

Exactly..what the **** is wrong with Rutgers that they won't acknowledge Marty and his services. Methinks there was a bad falling out and favors paid out for new people to get the job
.and im being serious. Its a poor job by Rutgers
