I loved that the metal mascot on horseback is getting more play this year (at least I noticed more). The pregame video of him/her riding across campus campus is really good but the hairy horse eyeball during opposing field goals is even better.
IMO, RU really should build this up as a tradition and play this up even more.

1) Give the horse a name and keep it through the generations (like Georgia does with Uga or Texas with Bevo).
2) Pregame pettings for kids to meet the horse.
3) Sell shirts and branded stuff with the name.
4) More in game videos.

Thoughts...

Metal mascot? First it's a representation of a knight. Second I'm not sure the armor is metal.

I do think your #1 and #3 ideas have merit. The petting thing could be problematic depending on the horses temperament and the crowd trying to get close.

I called him the metal mascot because... well how do you differentiate the horse back knight from the cartoony one. The two mascots really should each have names too if we are going to keep them both.

Agree 100% on all accounts. There should be a vote on the horse name moving forward by the fans. Maybe during the Spring Game they announce the name moving forward.

I recall that the previous horse we used for the role was named Lord Nelson.
Yes he died. My wife and her friend were responsible for his up keep during their work study program while at RU(along with other animals). I think it's actually a pretty cool name. The guy riding the horse needs to hit the 50 like he did against MSU. It looks better, most times he only makes it to the 25 or 30 then turns him around.

Aren't they all Lord Nelson. Isn't the current horse Lord Nelson III, or something like that.
I'll have to ask my wife when she gets home. She knows this crap.

Horse's name is Marty.
The horse that was famous for the celebration penalty in 1994 was Lord Nelson. There were no other Lord Nelsons. Lord Nelson died in 2015 at the age of 42. Thats fing old

The mascot of USC is Tommy Trojan. All of the horses that have been involved with the mascot have been named Traveler. The current one is Traveler IV.

We need a permanent name for our horse as mentioned above.

The final home game of the 2007 season was also the final game for a Rutgers mascot with a decade of loyal service, “Lord Espartero IV, the horse that roams that Rutgers Stadium field during every game, retired after 10 years of service…” according to the November 18, 2007 Star-Ledger. The 30 year old replaced Lord Nelson as the last Scarlet Knight mascot.

According to the February 7, 2015 Times of Trenton, Lord Nelson joined the Rutgers University Department of Public Safety as a police horse and from 1978-2000 did double duty as the longest-serving Scarlet Knight living mascot in Rutgers history. Lord Nelson was retired to the Gales Way Farm in Wrightstown, NJ and in 2015, at the age of 42, he became the first to win the “Horse Personality of the Year” award from the New Jersey Equine Advisory Board, a division of the Department of Agriculture. One year in a horse’s life is roughly equal to three years for a human. So Lord Nelson was the amazing equivalent of 126 years old in human terms!

To add to #4 there should be a video version for Basketball and Wrestling as he gallops to the RAC.

If feasible have him (and the horse) come in the back door and come to the corner of Sections 106 and 108 and then just saunter across the end line in front of the Student Section and either acknowledge our team by a dip of his helmet or a point of the sword and just leave thru the corner of Sections 110 and 111.

Pretty sure the place would go nuts the first time this happens.

I thought they should have re-filmed some scenes with fall foliage.. perhaps at night as well.. then have the 3 videos ready to go based on what it looks like outside...

I was friends with the man under the armor. His was early 2000s. His name was Jorge. Very nice guy. I haven’t run into him in years though.

his name is Marty, why is everyone trying to name a horse that already has a name

Just like we don't call the Knight Jorge (though a guy named Jorge may be inside the suit of armor), we also don't (or shouldn't) call the horse Marty. Marty is playing a part that is passed on through the years to new horses.
I like the suggestion above that we call the horse "Colonel Henry" in perpetuity, regardless of the actual name of the horse at any given time.

Marty is Marty most of the time, but on 7 game days a year Marty is Colonel Henry!

How lame is Rutgers Spirit that these things don't have names?

It starts at the top; Greg instilled "Wear Red To The Game" and we did - like never before - but that has gone away and, now, we see maybe 50% of our fans on game day (other than student section) in "red." This is one of several things - like the "naming" of the horse, that MUST be corrected before next season, IMHO, no question!

** I don't think these things are overlooked, purposely, I just believe that there is SOOOO MUCH for the current regime to deal with that, well, some of these things are making their way up the list slower than others, that's all.
