The Minnesota Model

So what did Minnesota have in place at the beginning of 2019 that Nebraska might hope to replicate if it wants to have a successful season — maybe not a 9-0 start successful, but one in which the Huskers contend for the division — in 2020:

Momentum
  • Last year, Minnesota finished the season with a rivalry-game victory at Wisconsin, owning the injured Badgers in Madison and securing a berth in the Detroit Bowl.
  • Can we beat both Maryland and Iowa? The odds are long, especially against a more stable and talented Iowa team, but I think yesterday showed that we can move the ball against good defenses. If the Huskers can finish drives (especially against Iowa) and put together a healthy D-Line, we at least have a puncher's chance.
An efficient, experienced quarterback
  • 2019 is redshirt sophomore Tanner Morgan's third year in the Minnesota system. He has been smart and efficient in getting the ball to his playmakers.
  • 2020 will be Adrian Martinez's third year in Frost's system. At 19 years old, he hasn't quite yet shown the on-field maturity (off the field, I swear he's 35) you would expect from a top-notch QB. Can he get to that point next year?
Multiple experienced running backs
  • Minnesota's backfield has two fifth-year seniors — Shannon Brooks and Rodney Smith — as well as third-year sophomore Mohamed Ibrahim. Both Smith and Ibrahim have had 1,000-yard seasons, and Brooks had run for nearly 2,000 yards in his first three seasons. Injuries kept them all off the field at one point or another the last few years. This year, they're healthy.
  • We will have Mills back for his senior year, and his fifth year in college. He looked surprisingly good yesterday, showing flashes that he may well have an Ozigbo-like senior season. Beyond that, we're not as experienced, but having some players such as Thompkins and Johnson step up to create a three-headed monster can happen, though we won't likely be as rich at RB as Minnesota is this year.
Top-notch wide receivers
  • Tyler Johnson is a senior who entered the year with nearly 2,000 yards receiving. Chris Autman-Bell is a third-year sophomore who recorded nearly 500 yards receiving as a redshirt freshman. Rashod Bateman is a true sophomore who had 704 yards as a freshman. Tight ends have caught just 17 passes for the Gophers this year.
  • We'll likely have J.D. Spielman as a senior and Wandale Robinson as a true sophomore to mirror Johnson and Bateman, respectively. But who emerges from a redshirt year or in the recruiting cycle to add more threats outside will tell if we can match Minnesota. We actually should have more tight end productivity than we do now and than Minnesota currently has.
A massive offensive line
  • Minnesota runs 325, 325, 305, 345 and 400 pounds out to start the game. They're not especially experienced — no seniors, but two fourth-year players — but they do a good job pushing around lines such as ours.
  • We will finally have some experience on the line next year, even if it's provided by the same group that has been disappointing through most of the season. If yesterday is a sign, those disappointments may be fewer in the near future. This year's line averages 34 pounds less per man than Minnesota's and that might not change immediately, but experience and agility should help Nebraska perform better.
A senior-dominated defense
  • Minnesota starts six seniors on defense, but it also features two graduate transfers who have multiple years left to play for the Gophers — Micah Dew-Treadway came from Notre Dame and has two years to play, while Benjamin St-Juste came from Michigan and has three full years to play.
  • Without any depth chart changes, Nebraska is likely to start about six seniors next year. The key will be finding breakout players in the current redshirt list or finding some game-changers in the transfer portal.
A unifying message
  • "Row the Boat," baby. It may sound corny, but it appears everybody has bought in. Kids like that kind of stuff.
  • I'm not sure what our unifying message is yet. I'm hoping it's more than the "We're Nebraska, and You're Not" that seems to carry absolutely no weight these days, and may do more psychic harm than good.

A perfect momentum-building schedule

  • Minnesota started with a good FCS team (South Dakota State) and two Group of 5 teams before hitting the Big Ten. They didn't look good, but they won. Then they hit the Big Ten, playing their first four conference games against three losing teams (Purdue, Nebraska and Rutgers) and an Illinois team still finding itself. It was the perfect runway to beating Penn State at home and giving Iowa all it could handle on the road before running out of gas.
  • Unfortunately, Nebraska has no runway as we open against Purdue, a team that Scott Frost is 0-2 against. After that, we get South Dakota State and two Group of 5 teams, though Central Michigan is better than Georgia Southern, and Cincinnati is much better than Fresno. We get all four of those teams in Lincoln, where hope will be high as it always is. Nebraska re-enters the Big Ten with three winnable games against Northwestern, Illinois and Rutgers. After that our schedule toughens considerably with a five-week finish against Ohio State, Penn State, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
I'm not predicting that we'll replicate Minnesota's success — in fact, I'll be happy with a 6-1 or maybe even a 5-2 start. But if we can fill the holes noted above, we can at least put ourselves in position to at least be in contention for the division title the last three weeks of November.

Agreed. I think Minny comes back to earth and you large leaps from Purdue and Nebraska. Iowa and Wisconsin will be Iowa and Wisconsin.

There isn't anything special about the MN rebuild. They were already going to bowl games and winning 8 games before PJ Fleck took over. PJ was lucky there were some good defensive players and skill guys already on the roster, otherwise those close games at the start of the season would have been losses.

Their top defensive lineman, their top linebacker, their top wide receiver and top running back were already on the roster when Fleck took over. It's not going to be easy for MN to replace those guys.

I was big on MN coming into this season because of what they returned, but next season I have some serious concerns about being able to replace 8 to 9 starters on defense and what they will have to replace those guys on offense. In the off-season I'll study it like I do with all Big Ten West teams and will have a better feel for it.

Here's the thing, none of us really know what any given roster looks like behind what we see in games. Why would the roster be depleted? Why wouldn't Fleck have filled in some of the weak areas? It is obvious he and his staff have developed their available talent to a higher degree. Ask yourself, we're they top 10 recruiting talent? No, but on the field they were a different story. If he can do more with less, then why does everyone expect it to suddenly stop? I don't know but I would not count them out. Apparently there were no cultural difficulties and getting everyone together was not an issue. Having the older players take over and produce will pay huge dividends for the team AND builds a better team chemistry. JMHO

I keep reading that Spielman will transfer after this season
Where are you seeing this? It seems like there have always been rumors he is unhappy or will leave, but he just keeps his mouth shut and keeps producing.

I'm not addressing sustainability in my OP, just if Nebraska can achieve a level of success next year that might rival what Minnesota has done this year, and that begins with these final two games this year.

Nebraska will crush Maryland. They are terrible. We will play a close game against Iowa and Martinez will throw a pick with us down by 6 on the final drive. We will momentarily think we are going bowling in the 3rd quarter but then be let down once Iowa intercepts the ball. That ain’t no prediction that’s what it’s gone be.

I’ve seen the Spielman thing repeatedly on this board and I have zero idea if there’s any truth to it. But I have seen it a number of times and I wonder what the source of this is?

Spielman has already used a redshirt. He would have to go down a level or , I guess he could claim someone called him a racist name and be eligible right away.
If he graduates before next season he could be a grad transfer without penalty. But I don’t think that happens.

JD graduates in the spring according to the Nebraska website. Personally I am not expecting him back next season but not saying he wouldn't be. Hickman will be moved officially to WR, IMO.

We will need to bring in about 3 more WR's to the 2020 class, IMO. Gotta get that unit fixed.

When you say "gotta get that unit fixed" what are you saying? Without looking, how many of the WR group are Frost and Co recruits? Is it going to get "fixed" by recruiting better players, different players, more players or developing them more. I am confused because this is what we are going to keep hearing the next few years in this process.

It's a unit that lacks talent and no size and no deep threat. We need the size, more speed, and better overall talent. I would argue only Rutgers is in worse shap as a WR unit in the Big Ten. The good news is with the freshman and a good 2020 WR class it can get fixed quickly.

Just out of curiosity - what was their phenomenally talented defensive player’s record before the DC change and after? How did that phenomenal talent perform against Nebraska before and after that change???? Hmmmmm????

My understanding is that he doesn't get along with the coaching staff. I believe this will be a mutual parting. Again, what I have heard is that Frost believes JD is part of the problem with the chemistry of the team, but is handcuffed to play him because what there is on the bench is not good. The problem with that method is that Frost is setting the tone in that if you have a bad attitude but are better than the rest of the position group, you are going to play.

Regardless, I would place a significant amount of money on the side of Spielman leaving.

Thank you. Sucks, but I gathered as much. I haven’t been impressed with Coach Walters to date. Obviously, I don’t know enough about this situation to place blame anywhere. I know JD was very close with Mike Riley and Keith Williams, as well some of the guys that left, like Tyjon. So it might it might not be realistic to ask Walters to win him over, but still wish he could have.

Let me build on this. Illinois was missing their starting QB, Purdue's starting QB and Rondale went down early in the first quarter, Nebraska didn't have their starting QB, Rutgers didn't have their starting QB, Maryland didn't have their starting QB, and northwestern doesn't have their starting QB? So what is that? They will have played 3 starting QB's this year in the big ten? With a defense that I think loses 8 guys after the season.

I agree, but they won all of the games ahead of them until it crashed down this weekend. THey didn't play all that well and still had an opportunity to win against a decent Iowa team. I know as fans we like to take shots, but they won 8 straight games. Only a handful of teams each year can say that.

Oh. I am not discrediting that at all. I'm hoping Purdue can get healthy and be something like 6-2 or 7-2 next year, as I think they have the schedule to do so and the talent/team to do so. I would be impressed with that, let alone 9-1 or whatever Minny is exactly. Heck, even IU. Not sure how great they are, but they are beating the teams they are supposed to. Credit to them.

Look at Nebraska and Minnesota's recruiting classes for the last five years. Minnesota is nowhere close to NE. Fleck is replacing Kill's players with higher rated classes. Look at both schools records in that span... that's about coaching and culture not players on the roster.

Congrats on taking the bold stance of answering the question. I knew several others would ignore, hide, or divert that Minnesota is doing this superior talent. Let’s look at that 4 star talent. Minnesota has recruited FOUR 4 star upperclassman since 2015. They recruited 2 more last year, while Frost recruited ELEVEN 4 star recruits in 2019 alone. Minnesota is kicking *** with 3 star players.
