Let's start with the themes:

Princeton needs to double Cliff down low with Martini and Pierce/Allocco. They need to force him into post moves or he will score at will.

Rutgers needs to guard the perimiter, as Princeton will shoot it from 3 with abandon.

It would be unwise for either team to press with consistency, as both teams handele the ball very well.

The match-ups:

Cliff vs Martini-Zach is from NJ and has played against Cliff many times. Both players are very psyched for the game to happen, as they know each other well and have faced each other twice in high school. Huge edge: Rutgers.

Pierce vs. Mag (or Hyatt)- Caden is crafty and will be the second best position player Mag faces this season after Illinois. His brother is in the NFL and his other brother a very good European basketball player. Pearce can pick and pop, or score inside. Advantage: Princeton.

Xaivian Lee vs. Derek/Fernandes- Noah shoots it the best. Lee, the star of the Canadian U20 team this summer has the best handle and is the quickest. Advantage: even

Allocco vs. Griffiths- Gavin is the more talented player, but a frosh. Allocco is a veteran and as tough as nails and can drill it. Advantage: Princeton.

J-Mike vs. Blake Peters- If on, J-Mike is tremendous. Peters can shoot it.Advantage: Rutgers.

Bench- No contest. Rutgers goes 9 deep and is far better in talent off the bench. Rutgers.

Coaching- Both Steve and Mitch are skilled and veteran system coaches. Even.

Crowd- Over 5000 expected and 80% will be in Red. Huge advantage Rutgers.

Final score- Rutgers 74 Princeton 68.

Thanks for the rundown, Richard. I didn't think Mag was playing. Do you have word otherwise?

Carino implied he could be ready to play in his article today...

'"Everyone Princeton puts on the floor can drain a 3-pointer. Pikiell emphasized close-outs in Rutgers' game prep. It will help if senior forward Mawot Mag is out there. The defensive stopper tore an ACL last February but has been practicing. Pikiell had him rotating in and out with the first team over the past week."

If Mag plays, I would guess it would be less than expected as he works himself back in over the first few games . Will be great to see him get back to pre injury performance.

Calling Lee and Derek/Fernandes even is ridiculous. I’ve watched Lee and see the upside but he has a lot to learn still and was far less productive last year than either Fernandes or Derek. I would take Simpson in a race too. I think it’s more likely Jamichael Davis is better than Lee than Lee is equivalent to Derek and Noah.

Couple concerns
GG inexperience on D, losing his guy on perimeter vs team like this
Lack of length on perimeter vs their three point shooters
If we must play them, and some here insist we must, I’d rather play them after all the new guys had a few games under their belts to gel a little bit.

The new players competed in two pre season games against St.Johns and DePaul and overseas games during the summer.Once the season starts there are no excuses .Pikiell has stated this seasons has more depth than last year.

Princeton’s top three returning scorers — G Matt Allocco (6-4, 197), F Caden Pierce (6-7, 220), G Blake Peters (6-1, 197) — shot a combined 37% from deep (138-373) last season.

This is one of those games against an undersized mid-major where you can absolutely lose if they get hot from 3-pt range. Even if Cliff is able to dominate the paint with, say, 24 points on two-pointers, it might not matter if the Tigers shoot 12-24 from deep.

We need to close out on shooters AND we need to hit our fair share of 3-pointers.

That’s always an issue with Pike teams.
Closing out to defend the 3

Paul was also guilty of over helping and leaving his man too often. Cliff doesn't need any help and will be an intimidating rim protector. Protect against the 3 and make them score off the dribble

In B1G play last season, we were 7th in opponent 3% at .340. Not bad. We gave up more 3s than most, partly because it was so hard to score on us overall. We had the top FG% overall at just .413.

The old guard got their game and their loss. Always love a quad three loss to start off the year. If you feel you must schedule this game, do it a month in or so when the team has had a few games together.
It was foolish to open the season vs PU

Get a few games under their belt first vs cupcakes like BU

Play PU around the holidays

Even old farts knew if you do play a team like Princeton don't make it a first game especially with a revamped squad .In any event this game was a waste and not worth to be played.

Anyone who understands the game knew what this was going to be like unlike some self proclaimed experts.
