The Hawks That Got Away

With the season coming to a close, it's interesting to see how a few of the guys are doing who were either almost Hawks or who left the program in their "prime."

Jacob Bostick. WR. Played in 5 games for the Hawks as a freshmen (he had a few drops but 0 catches) and fans were high on him becoming a stud because he looked the part at 6'3 and athletic. Well he chased an $EC bag of cash and somehow transferred over to #3 ranked Texas A&M. Last year, he played in 12 games for the Aggies and increased his production from 0 catches all season to 1 catch all season. I don't think the Aggies were too pleased with their return on investment, and Bostick jumped back in the portal and ended up at powerhouse San Diego State. So far, he's got 11 catches on the year in the Mountain West Conference.

Drew Miller. P. The nation's #1 ranked punting recruit coming out of Mediapolis, Iowa. For reasons unknown, the Hawks didn't recruit the kid because their top choice was the kid from 8,000 miles away in Dakin. Well, Miller took his talents to #4 ranked Georgia, where he's averaging a whopping 48 yards per punt, with 1/3 of his punts being downed inside the 20 yardline. Dakin, Iowa's preferred choice, is averaging 42 yards per punt after his disappointing performance against USC.

John Nestor. DB. Nestor was your typical Hawkeye db recruit. Lightly recruited but Phil saw something special in him. Phil was right. While Nestor had just 14 tackles for the Hawks last year, he's stepped up his game at Minnesota this year. He now has 38 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 6 pass deflections for the Gophers. He sure would have been a solid second cb at Iowa with his 6'1 frame. Could have been the difference in several back breaking catches by Oregon/USC/Indiana.

Brendan Sullivan. QB. Iowa's top QB last year bolted when the Hawks brought in a grad transfer that they blew the entire offense's NIL allotment on. He went down to Tulane, who ultimately recruited over Sullivan and brought in a second portal QB who ended up winning the starting job. So while Sully threw 53 passes for the Hawks last year in his backup role before injury, at Tulane he's thrown just 28 passes (2 tds and 2 ints). Probably not what he envisioned for his senior year after 2 transfers.

Kaleb Brown. WR. After transferring from Ohio State to Iowa, Hawk fans thought Brown could be the best WR they've had since DJK. As a redshirt freshmen for the Hawks 2 years ago, he looked the part, with 27 catches for 215 yards. By comparison, Iowa's #1 receiver this year, 5th year senior Gill, has 18 catches for 237 yards. So what is Brown up to this year? Sadly, he landed at UAB, where he has just 15 catches for 194 yards. It's a shame, cause I was a big fan of Brown.

LeShon Williams. RB. In 2023, Williams ran for 821 yards for the Hawks, averaging 4.8 yards per carry with a really bad OL. By comparison, Moulton currently has 612 yards rushing this season. Williams transferred to Kansas, where he's rushed for just 414 yards, averaging 5.3 yards per carry as a backup.

Moral of the story...the grass isn't always greener at other schools. Particularly with QBs, RBs and WRs who get way more opportunity at Iowa (due to a lack of talent) than they get when they transfer.

Caden Crawford and Jeff Bowie have had a pretty good year playing at South Dakota U. Side note, Mosai Newsom (ex-Newton and Nebraska) ended up at USD also.

Drew Miller is actually the backup at Georgia. Not sure if injury or performance related because his 6 punts are pretty good albeit only 6. I've been disappointed by the season Dakin's had.
We dont know if Dakin is thinking too much about his technique or what but I do think his avg hasyp dropped. But 43.5 yard avg with very little return yards is good enough with our defense most of the time.

Yes it would be nice to see him booming 55 yarders when we need it

All in all, Iowa has fared pretty well in not having talent go somewhere else and be a star.

Charlie Jones is a notable exception.
I’d throw Tyrone Tracy in there, every I time I see a Giants game he is getting a decent number of touches. So basically we had given Purdue Jones & Tracy, and got Sullivan & Gill in return from Northwestern…😬

Just out of curiosity, I looked up Joey Labas stats, the QB who BF and KF refused to play:

2025 season:
72.2% completion percentage
1313 yds
10/4 TDs/int
173.9 QB rating
Looks like Labas could have been Iowa's guy this year for a fraction of the cost (and a lot more goodwill than bringing in a high dollar 1 and done player). It's amazing what a few poor decisions on something as subjective as playing time can be.

Keagan Johnson has had a pretty decent year for New Mexico
I thought Johnson played at Kansas State...but sure enough, he bounced over to New Mexico this year for some reason.

Looks like Johnson is having a breakout season. That's more yards than Wetjen, Gill, and Phillips have for Iowa combined!

Law- when is your objective USC post game report out? Always a good read.
Yes, Nestor is a big loss. He would had put up a better fight vs USC receivers, they picked on that secondary all game long.

After seeing him break a tackle against Minnesota and essentially win us the game that year, I really didn't want him to transfer. I checked his stats from time to time last year and he did OK with KSU last year. I'm not surprised that he's breaking out now. Would've been nice to have him in the WR room.

I always liked Keagan’s upside, along with that other WR (similar size/speed) who left us as well. Glad he is doing well. In the end, having Wetjen was a good swap….

Read this week in Law at your own risk LOL. Actually Hawks played extremely well, especially in the 1st half. Just got out-coached and out-played in the 2nd half. But hey last time in the Coliseum, the Hawks lost to USC 55-0! at least this one was game.

Completing almost 3/4 passes during 7 on 7 is impressive, let alone against a live defense that has prepared for you all week

Labas is the only QB departure of the last 5, 6, 10 years that I was disappointed over losing. I think he would thrive in this offense, and a good OC could’ve carved a path in 2023 for him to work in a zone-read heavy offense instead of trotting out a wounded Cade.

Tracy still makes zero sense to me in every regard.

I don't blame him for going to Purdue but he was asked to play rb here... he didn't want to.

Goes to PU, doesn't do well at WR and moves to RB. Does... okay? Not great.

Then gets to NY to be a backup somehow but has had multiple starts due to injury.
It's one of those things where Kaleb Johnson can't get any playing time at Pitt and a guy who learned to play RB his senior year gets run. Different situations, I know, but still weird.

6ft 3 J Bostick was starting to finally blossom with 3 tds in 5 games as a SDSU starting wr before hurting his knee mid October in a season-ending practice injury (finishing his season prematurely with more tds than any Iowa receiver currently has through 10 games). Wish he had stuck around.

Arland Bruce. Never played at Ok State due to gambling issue. Went to Canada playing in some semi pro league.

His one play that could have changed the outcome of a game was the turf monster tackle vs Iowa State short of the goal line. Next play the fullback “fumbles” into the endzone and iowa goes onto lose 10-7 or something like that.

@Kirk is God Haha. Don't get me started on Iowa's 5 star LB commit, the "bone crusher." He decommitted and went to Purdue. Played in a few games as a true freshmen at Purdue....then got arrested for rape. While out on bail for the rape, he beat, kidnapped, and raped another woman...while driving his girlfriend's car to the crime scene. The guy is currently serving 37 years in prison. =-0

Lest we forget the most infamous recruit in the Kirk Ferentz era, Cade McNamera.

Cade is now in his SIXTH season as a college quarterback. After throwing for 2,600 yards in 2021 to Michigan's fleet of NFL WRs, he parlayed that into a huge pay day to come to Iowa (because he was beat out by a freshmen at Michigan who actually could throw the football). Cade proceeded to throw for just 1,500 yards in 2 years at Iowa...with a laser like 51% completion percentage on his check down passes.

Cade wanted to continue playing football after his Iowa debacle, but the only schools that would even talk to him were down a level or two. He ended up at mighty East Tennessee State, where he's thrown 7 touchdowns and 6 interceptions against the likes of Elon, Wofford, and West Georgia. It's amazing how someone that bad at football could have had the arrogance and confidence of that douche bag.

That's more yards than Wetjen, Gill, and Phillips have for Iowa combined!
Big difference in competion level. Didn't do well at KSU.

Surprised this is a guy Kirk would have recruited!

Honestly. I hate that Fidone ended up at Nebraska. I think he could have had a brilliant career at Iowa (assuming his knees had better luck in IC as well).
