The foul call

All of American sports is in an uproar about the moving screen being the wrong call. What am I missing? That was definitely a moving screen and if not called it is screwing over Iowa. That's what people are forgetting here. "You can't make that call" ..... Why not? If you don't blow the whistle the other team gained an advantage.

And in a game where your constant grabbing and hold players defensively…to call that weak sauce foul that ended the game essentially..::it’s not the best decision

It sucks it ended like that but on the other hand you can’t not call a foul because it isn’t a great way to end a game. A foul is a foul. Plenty of other games have ended with fouls.

If they are upset about that call, then don't show them the half dozen or so controversial calls against UK over recent years.

No one seemed to care when Shabazz flopped without being touched to help Uconn push away from us. It was just UK fans being sour grapes.

If we lost because of THAT call last night, it probably doesn't even phase us after what we've been through lol. If DJ committed an illegal screen like that, oh well.

For the record, I have always said that the non-foul call on Mich St on the Patrick Sparks 3 was the right call. I have also said that one or two of the calls against Wallace in the 98 championship game were bad calls. I would be happy to get this call but that doesn't make it the right call.

No, each team put themselves in the position to be vulnerable at the end of the game. A bad pass, a bad shot, a foul, a mishandled play, a blocked shot ends it. Want to win? Don't be in that situation.

I thought it was a foul. I was pulling for Iowa so I was okay with it. On the other hand if Kentucky had received that call and it cost a FF game, I'd be thinking we'd been jobbed. Easy to see both sides.
Most of the time in those situations the referees don't make that call. They try to let the players decide it.

You shouldn't have to play a perfect game to win. Every night in sports, there are dozens of teams who win, that didn't play all that great. They made mistakes. Some of them might have even played their C game and still won.

You shouldn't have to play well enough to win, only to get screwed at the end, and then have to find a way to win a 2nd time.

You have to get the calls right. If UK loses after Shabazz's "foul" was never called, then so be it. But that was a game changing call, as was the shot clock violation against wisconsin.

Maybe not, but at the same time you seem to be advocating for the sport to be reduced to simple entertainment and not legitimate competition. It’s already getting to the point in the NBA where it’s not even a competitive sport anymore. At least when a call like that is made is signals that the game is still a competitive sport vs. fake entertainment.

We’re going too far down this road. I legitimately think in 15 years sports are going to have a script written for the outcomes.

Many many calls are judgement calls by the refs. There is contact on almost every possession. The refs choose what to call and what not to call. I felt this was a no call. If you want to argue that this had to be a foul, then you really have to go back to the 100 no calls in the game and call them as well.

I watched the NC St/UNC ACC title game yesterday. I watched Bacot extend his hands 3 or 4 times and push Burns as he was making a move to the basket on one drive. There was no call and Burns scored anyway. That is pretty much every single game now. They choose what to call and what to ignore.

It was a foul. I didn’t think it was so egregious it should have been called. Refs watch someone’s head flail back for calling fouls more than watching if players are actually committing a foul. As soon as Marshall acted like she had been hit by a truck the call was being made.

For all the technicality people, watch the full highlight. The same UCONN girl literally sets a screen where she’s moving just 1-2 seconds prior too. No reaction from the Iowa player, no call. The head jerking back on the second one bought the call(yes it was a foul).

Ruined the ending of an ugly basketball game that was a painful watch. But due to the close score and now controversy we will label it an exciting game…

Most sports are set up. Controlled by refs before the game even starts. That is why some calls are "missed"

That’s true. At the same time I can’t see advocating for it which you seem to be doing. This seems like a case where they just made the call and didn’t do it in an arbitrary way. Should be applauded. Not sure why you’d want it the other way.

With a minute to go in the fourth, each team had 1 team foul…and there was plenty of grabbing and such that could have easily been called. Due to you calling the game like that, as an official, you don’t all of a sudden make a call like that when you could have called a ton more. That’s my biggest gripe.

That’s a different issue all together. Because a call is missed yesterday doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be called today. That particular play was a foul. We don’t have a different standard because it’s a final four game.

I just don’t think it’s as complicated an issue as some are making it. Now if they’re allowing that screen all game then I’d say you have to let it go, but I missed most of it.

It’s an argument in favor of being entertained vs. being an official game with official rules. We’re already going too far down this road.

You and I both know that every foul will never be called in any game on any team, I mean like never. Some fouls are more egregious than others when an advantage is gained, some happen in a crowd that are harder to see, some (like this one) happen in a wide open space. This was a textbook moving screen that would get called at any point in the game. Not a touch foul to the shooting hand, not a 50/50 block/charge call, not a judgement call of any kind but rather a correctly called foul. Some fouls get missed, some don’t, this one didn’t, end of story and game.

Yeah that argument always gets made. If refs were consistent, it wouldn’t need to be a point of debate.

Had to lol at Taurasi though, She was on another level saying it shouldn’t be called because the player didn’t end up getting open. She been watching too much soccer. That’s actually one rule soccer gets right.

What hurt watching the most is watching how well Iowa defended that regardless and knowing how bad UK would’ve botched it.
