Another Squandered Opportunity by Mississippi

I e-mailed the governor. These flags are an embarrassment to our great state. Magnolia? I told him that as a marketing person we are doing nothing with these flags to sell our state. We need the phrase, "Birthplace of America's Music" on the flag. If you want people to visit our state then give them something to remember. A Magnolia???? Blah!

I'm starting to think it's some kind of conspiracy. Someone with a lot of power is pushing to keep that stupid shield flag in this. There is absolutely no reason that flag should be chosen to represent Mississippi out of over 2000 designs.

They've been intentionally screwing with the other two. They changed the circle of 20 stars to include the "diamond star" at the top, and ended up with 10 stars to one side / 9 to the other so it was unsymmetrical. Now they've put 10 stars on each side to make it symmetric. So those two flags have 21 stars... 21 stars to represent the 20th state. wtf? Try to convince me someone's not intentionally trying to get those two knocked out.

I've been supporting the flags with a magnolia since this started, but I fully believe the shield is what we'll be voting for in November because someone with a lot of power on the inside has chosen it.

It’s really too bad that State and OM don’t both have home games during week 1. Some kind of joint unveiling on 9/26 on both national broadcasts would have been a sight to see

Remember, this will NOT be our new flag. Only the flag that goes to the voters on Nov. 4. It's going to be hard for any flag to get a majority of the votes between pissed off old flag supporters, pissed off Stennis flag supporters, and people who may just legitimately not like the flag chosen.

It's also been the best designed flag since the cut to nine. I hate that Gondor got cut but at least Mid-South got knocked out early.

It has a ton of history behind that seal. That’s my favorite one.

You can have your favorite, but it is not an exact replica of the shield on the old territorial flag.

Looks like a nasty old *** sitting above churning water in an ornamental toilet bowl. The artist did it as a joke, you can bet.

Good point, and thanks for the reminder about the rest of the process. Whenever this thing does get settled, it’d be pretty neat to tie it into a football broadcast, but that may be a pipe dream.

And that is only if the petition to force a four way vote including the old flag doesn't get enough signatures. If that gets on the ballot, it will be back to the old flag.

I'm starting to agree with you. And I suspect this had something to do with the required wording on the flag, and with Laurin Stennis's rant the other day.

Tate basically decided he would not stand in the way of removing the old flag, but he would make it nearly impossible for a new flag to be adopted through the up-or-down vote on one flag, instead of letting the people decide from among multiple finalists.

No way it happens. Ballot initiatives are incredibly hard to get enough signatures for and then throw in Covid19 and it ain’t happening.

Truth. Covid-19 is so bad that even the Jehovah's Witnesses aren't going door-to-door.

I was in that boat, but as I see more and more flag discussion, the more ready I am for it to just be over. I didn't care about the old flag and I doubt I'm going to care about the new flag. As terrible as the arklams flag was, if that had ended up on the ballot, I probably would have voted yes just to go back to not thinking about our flag. I'm hoping there will be a lot of people like that come november.

Then there were two

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A commission working on a new Mississippi flag has narrowed the choices to two designs. One has a shield. The other has a magnolia blossom on a dark blue background. Commissioners made the decision after five proposals were literally run up a flagpole Tuesday. They wanted to see how the designs look fluttering in the wind — or hanging limply. And, they said the flags look different on a pole than they do as drawings on a page. In late June, Mississippi legislators voted to retire the last state flag to include the Confederate battle emblem, which is broadly condemned as racist.

The last remaining flag with the magnolia was also changed. It had maroon on each end but now it is red. I voted for it when it was maroon--it looked a LOT better than it does with the red, probably because of the thin gold stripe between it and the blue. So now I will pick the shield one.
