The fact that Cliff is a role player

Cliff would be pretty far down on the list for why they lost. Mark Sears on the other hand who is supposed to be their best player only scored 6 points, and had a down year generally compared to last year, would be the main culprit.
Sears was a first team All American and single-handedly won sweet 16 game. Hard to blame anything on him

That doesn’t change the fact that their best player was awful against Duke and that along with the fact they couldn’t force the tempo are the two reasons Duke handled them easily.

It doesn't help that their 1.5 million dollar big man was a no show

Most recently I remember him being a factor when they upset #1 Auburn. He was one of Bama's leading scorers and rebounders while only playing half the game minutes wise.
First of all, you had to go back a month. Secondly, Broome (auburn center) scored 34 points. Lmao. I will repeat, How many games was he a big factor in against quality opponents?

Bama rotated their 4s and 5s all year. Grant Nelson only averaged 25.5 minutes. Then Cliff was next at 19.2.

Trying to attribute how many the Auburn center scored in that game against Cliff just shows your usual outsized biases once again.

There should be no hate towards Cliff. He cashed in a big check to play reduced minutes, against top competition all year in the SEC and went very far into the tournament with Bama. Something no other RU players can say since the 1970s.

Cliff should have been able to eat Lathan/Ogbole/Martini alive and he should have been motivated big time to do so, yet he played 15 minutes had 6 points and 4 rebounds. It tells you a bit about his ability

Using single games to make broad judgments is usually the sign of a weak argument.

They really need to start including the money aspect into these articles just like they do for the NBA and NFL. When they say, he chose Alabama over ...." It makes it sound like they were the best option, when in reality they just offered the most money. They're paid professionals now, what they make should not be treated as a state secret.
You're probably right about his motivation, but . . . do we really know they offered the most money? If you were deciding to change employers (which is what he was doing), money would not be the only consideration; you would think about your potential colleagues and bosses, about how well you'd fit in, whether you would like the geographic area, etc.

Note that the new NIL clearinghouse will supposedly have information on all NIL deals so we'll know the income from that source. Here in New Jersey (and perhaps most other places), the salaries of public employees are publicly available and so we'll know how much Rutgers is paying players. Private universities, though, will be another matter, just as we know what Rutgers spends and makes on sports but not about Northwestern.

Except it was reported by multiple sources that Alabama didn't offer the most. He had an offer that was around $2m but felt Bama was a better fit for him.

The idea that Cliff could have been a major piece of a legendary Rutgers team … it’s hard to put a price tag on that.

The team would’ve been a lot better.

Cliff is a good example of a situation where the clearinghouse (if it operates as intended) would likely change the game board in terms of bidders. Money still helpful because there are some high roller self proclaimed branded kids who have third party market value no matter who they play for (Dylan and Ace level). Those kids get the Nike contracts but it’s also conceivable they could land local contracts that could be packaged quietly by donors and still justified market value. Cliff wouldn’t be this though - not close to it. There’s no angle where his brand would have had 3rd party market value other than at Rutgers where he was revered and any number of Jersey Mikes type vendors could’ve been used to broker a package (potentially funded behind the scenes by a donor but that wouldn’t matter). On paper - there would be value in using Cliff for local ads and such in NJ last year. The same could not have been said in Alabama so to offer him a package, Alabama would’ve had to use funds from their own basketball allocation direct from the school. There is a limit to that pot so it’s no longer an ongoing candy shop. Decisions will be needed because there will be no market value for transfers in who have no ties to a university who are not self proclaimed stars in the making nationally.
