I’m not saying they are… but… I think it’s going to be hard for us to compete in FB in this new era. I’m much more bullish about BB. You need so much depth in FB. Not sure we can acquire it.

We won't nor don't need to compete for FBS playoffs, but we should be able to compete with the Tulane's of the world so that we are playing enjoyable football games at the mid-tier level. You don't build that big, expensive stadium and then field dogcrap teams to play in it. I hope the administration recognizes that.

They need to find the next hot innovative HC that can bring in the talent. Our system is vanilla and has been for a long time and why I was always somewhat critical of Fitz. Three star skilled players aren't going to win the B1G, much less get to a bowl.
I would be happy just to make a bowl, even if it is the Mayo bowl. Thing is the way it is setup, we will have to win all of our out of conference games just to even have a shot at one. The NU administration seems to be clueless as well.

Frank Covey can’t ******* catch and the fact that our fans talk about him like he’s fast is telling of how lacking in talent we are. The new coach should tell the entire WR room to hit the portal.
Some may not like this, but it's the legacy of Fitz. He ran such a boring offense that no talented, athletic WR ever wanted to come here.

This is what the Dark Ages were like - a great player here and there. Every kind of mistake you can imagine. A drive here and there that kept a few of the games close sort of, but not beating anyone who wasn't a cupcake. We're still a notch better than the Venturi regime.

During The First Dark Ages, NU hardly ever got air time so I would be sneaking up on the Sunday paper to find out if NU beat the spread. They weren't going to win anything. NU seemed to do slightly better early in the season before their best players were injured - then things got even worse.
The recent past and the near future are The Second Dark Ages. Unfortunately, nearly every game will be aired these days. I won't be watching - just checking now and then to see if NU beat the spread. The more they change, the more they stay the same.
If things go really well, maybe NU is 5 years away from being competitive.

The ultimate insult occurred at the end of the first half when Tulane dropped 8 players more than 25 yards back from the line of scrimmage and one of the 3 lineman was able to make a tackle for a couple of yards gained

The only time NU's offense looked respectable was in their hurry up but that ended when NU ran in a substitute, allowing Tulane to sub and slow any momentum NU had. Every play NU runs out 3-5 players

Cignetti or a Mike Locksley. Somebody that is an innovator, the next Mike Leach, that will bring in top talent. Nobody in the NFL runs the crappy offense we do anymore.
I was not around for them, of course, but when I think about the Dark Ages teams, what stands out to me is the incomprehensible stat profiles.
Only playing a single ranked opponent in 1989 and still giving up 500+ yards/game on defense. Having a “leading” rusher with 162 yards and no TDs on the season in 1981. Mike Kerrigan throwing 4 TDs and 17 INTs in 1979. “Dual threat” QB Mike Greenfield rushing for 70 yards on 168 carries in 1985. The ‘78 team being both scoring the least points per game in the country and allowing the most points per game.
I don’t know if that’s where we’re headed. Even as bad as we’ve been several of the past few years, only the 1-11 year really approached that. Stone’s INTs were Dark Ages-ian, but he does have some time still to make the TD:INT ratio more respectable.
I’m not sure that it’s reading this way but I mean this to be optimistic. That Tulane game was ugly and it may be a long season, but I’m hopeful that at minimum it won’t be the worst thing this school has ever put on the field…

If this were a Dark Age type loss, Tulane would have beaten us 53-3.
Stone showed flashes. His scramble and throw to Covey on 3rd and 23 was amazing… and of course dropped. That lost first down & subsequent punt effectively ended the game.
The team looks bad but it is a long season.

My aunt went there and was friends with Doug Collins (who she says was a class act even in college).
