The Bullpen Situation

State pitching count
3 total pitched yesterday (starters included) - 142 pitches (113, 15, 14)
3 today - 179 pitches (123, 42, 14.) Our starters have taken the majority of the work. Our bullpen guys have thrown more warm up pitches than they’ve thrown in the game.

Campbell pitched 5 guys Friday (209 total pitches), and 6 guys today (192).

VCU pitched 4 yesterday (188 ) & 5 today (197)

One of them will be coming into tomorrow nights game with a decimated bullpen. Campbell’s starters accounted for 40 & 81 pitches. Their bullpen has 280 pitches. VCU starters accounted for 81 & 60 pitches. Their bullpen has 245 pitches. Tomorrow, one of them will walk into our game, if averages hold, with a bullpen that has thrown around 375-400 pitches. We have 85 bullpen pitches from 4 guys, the most of which was Brandon Smith’s 2 inning 42 pitch count, and none from Landon Sims.

THIS is what we are going to need to make a long run in Omaha. Excellent job by Lemonis keeping the starters healthy with low counts in the season and using them a bit longer in the post season....even if he does pull them a batter too late most times.

Exactly what I have been saying to my buddy here at the games. It would take a monumental meltdown for us to not win this regional now.

Look around at the scores from Saturday, teams that have actual pitching depth are few and far between this year. This weekend at The Dude has been one of the worst pitched Regionals I’ve ever seen, at least from the 2 thru 4 seeds, our guys have been fine thankfully. I realize our pitching isn’t perfect but around the country there have been some total disasters on the mound this weekend, whereas our pitching has been managed well and we are still fresh.

I believe you are just seeing the results of not having a real draft last year. 13 of the 16 one seeds are 2-0. Not a lot of parity like there normally is in baseball. Seems to be a very big gap from the top 12 to everyone else.
