How in the heck do universities think this doesn’t happen all the time at every school in the country when you don’t require online tests to be taken at a proctored test center where you have to show your ID to take the test.

True. In that respect, the University is to blame. But the burden is still on the student to take academics seriously and honestly. It's a university, after all. These guys really got off pretty lightly ... could have been expelled or removed from their teams.

Not being a dick but I thought we had an honor code, whereas, you would be kicked out of school for cheating.

Once again. I suspect we would all be shocked at the "help" some of these kids needed to get out of high school. And for the record good athletes have been "helped" since the gladiators were kicking ***. This was just a sloppy job and a bunch of folks got caught. We just have to move on.

The truth is, they should all be expelled. But relying on an honor code to stop cheating is naive. And it’s not just us. It’s every school in the country.

My sons took a few online classes at UPig and some of the classes required the test taker to be in an empty room and allow camera access to proctors. The proctor could see him and possibly others taking at same time. If anyone interrupted or helped, student automatically failed.

I was recently around an OM student

that took a test online, She told me, she had to have a video camera, and that she could be the only person in the room.

The test was taken at a specified time, and could not be changed.

She said they even asked to even look under her bed.

Now I understand why.

I agree

but, looks like steps are being taken, to lessen it.

In any case, playing in a game on tv, while a test is underway, mmmmm.

I suspect that is over.

Great post, my dad was a tremendous football

Player and was moved through the system to make sure he stayed eligible. He was a great man and poor as a church mouse, one of 12 children but lived a very successful life, unfortunately he wasn’t well educated but he made sure I was. Times haven’t changed much, love you pops.

I also agree, but we got caught. There was a series of stupid decisions made and we need to take our medicine. The “but everyone else is doing it” argument is very reb-ish.

Agreed. I'm proud of our administration for not playing this out in public, ruining the reputations of innocent bystanders to protect the guilty.

I quote the honor code:

"As a Mississippi State University student, I will conduct myself with honor and integrity at all times. I will not lie, cheat, or steal, nor will I accept the actions of those who do."

Not sure what the punishment is, but I would kick their butts out and they can reapply in the spring for next fall. The ones that go to a juco and make good grades or the ones that get a job and bust there tales are welcome back.

Whether everyone else is doing it or not is irrelevant, these guys got caught. Some things are more important than football and the integrity of our University should be one of those things.

I agree. We have to take our medicine, and truthfully, it's not as bad as it could have been. In true MSU style, we were incredibly stupid. Wasn't trying to make a "but everyone else is doing it" argument at all. More a call for controls over online classes everywhere, both for athletes and non-athletes. There are testing centers all around the country where you can go to take a proctored test and you have to show your ID to take it. The accreditation boards should make it mandatory for all online classes everywhere.

I appreciate your clarification and I still agree with you. I always enjoy your posts. Cheers.

There are many more Dexter Manley’s participating in college athletics than we want to acknowledge.

Universities made an attempt to get a handle on it with Prop 48 years ago but there are always ways to circumvent the rules if you want to win.

I think high schools around the country go out of their way to get these “marginal” students, student athletes eligible with the idea they are giving them a chance in life but the reality is that many just can’t pass on their own.

Then, when you get to college, the only way to stay eligible is to have tutors do the work.

I don’t think the burden should ever be on the university to “make” people act with integrity.
