I was there in 2001. It was the worst officiating I have ever seen. Even the Kang was going off about it.

I was also cheering loudly during their game against Hawaii the next week.

I recall they had some hotshot running back who broke his leg toward the end of our game.

I've never been in a madder crowd leaving a stadium. Everyone just seemed pissed, to the point where I heard this charming exchange: "want to end up like your running back? Say "go cougs" again!" There was no doubt that BYU was going to leave the stadium undefeated, no matter what it took.
(close second would be Arkansas 2000- the ice/sleet storm game)

I don't remember the officiating being all that bad in the game, but if we'd made the chip shot field goal (in regulation time as i recall) on the quagmire of a field, we'd have gone to Atlanta instead of Shreveport. Am I remembering correctly?

I didn't realize they had women announcers back then. Thought that was a relatively recent thing.

I was. It was a travesty of ********.

My favorite call was when one of our receivers made a reception, saw they got a first down, made the first down hang signal and was promptly flagged for 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct.

It was the only game I truly expected to see news of the crew being admonished in some fashion the next week.

I do remember they were undefeated and I could not help but think they were not about to let them lose to MSU. They promptly lost the next week if I remember correctly.

Make sure you don't search for BYU highlights from that game if you have high blood pressure.

I was there. I remember thinking we shouldn't let Mountain West officials officiate a game at Scott Field again. Of course now BYU is independent. Who will officiate the game Saturday?

Oh, I was there. My buddy and I almost started a holy war with some of the Mormons. That game is the only game I can remember where the refs blatantly cheated on purpose. I'm sure the MWC had told them to make sure BYU stayed undefeated. As some of you said, I remember as we were leaving the stadium Jackie was on the old video board calling out the officials and everybody cheered. It was bad. Also, I remember BYU had a white RB who was supposed to be real good. I think his name was Luke Staley? Anyway, we shut him down. I 've never seen such blatant holding as BYU was doing not get called.

game is right up there, to me, with this game.

While there may not have been as many bad calls in the Houston game, there were a number of game-outcome-changing calls that were blantantly BS against us.

Houston was almost certainly just bad refs that made atrocious calls at particularly inopportune times. It still stands out as particularly awful officiating, but the BYU game was on a different level.

It's hard to believe those refs weren't consciously trying to protect BYU's hopes for staying undefeated. But BYU had 17ing 72 hung on them the next game against Hawaii so maybe the Mountain West just decided that year that holding shouldn't be a penalty.

Here's the play that cost us the Houston game (and a bowl game). This was a pass inside the 5 that was called back for being across the line of scrimmage. The ball turned over on downs because it was 4th down. I circled the ball.
